| 1 Jesus, tomando a palavra, tornou-lhes a falar em parábolas, dizendo: | 1 Jesus began to speak to them in parables once again, |
| 2 "O reino dos céus é semelhante a um rei, que preparou o banquete de todas para seu filho. | 2 'The kingdom of Heaven may be compared to a king who gave a feast for his son's wedding. |
| 3 Mandou os seus servos chamar os convidados para as bodas, e não quiseram ir. | 3 He sent his servants to cal those who had been invited, but they would not come. |
| 4 Enviou de novo outros servos, dizendo; Dizei aos convidados: Eis que preparei o meu banquete, os meus touros e animais cevados já estão mortos, e tudo pronto; vinde às núpcias. | 4 Next he sent some more servants with the words, "Tel those who have been invited: Look, mybanquet is al prepared, my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, everything is ready. Come to thewedding." |
| 5 Mas eles desprezaram convite e foram-se, um para a sua casa de campo, e outro para o seu negócio. | 5 But they were not interested: one went off to his farm, another to his business, |
| 6 Outros lançaram mão dos servos que ele enviara, ultrajaram-nos e mataram-nos. | 6 and the rest seized his servants, maltreated them and kil ed them. |
| 7 O rei, tendo ouvido isto, irou-se, e, mandando os seus exércitos, exterminou aqueles homicidas, e pôs fogo à sua cidade. | 7 The king was furious. He despatched his troops, destroyed those murderers and burnt their town. |
| 8 Então disse aos servos: As bodas com efeito estão preparadas, mas os convidados não eram dignos. | 8 Then he said to his servants, "The wedding is ready; but as those who were invited proved to beunworthy, |
| 9 Ide, pois, às encruzilhadas, e a quantos encontrardes convidai-os para as núpcias. | 9 go to the main crossroads and invite everyone you can find to come to the wedding." |
| 10 Tendo saído os seus servos pelos caminhos, reuniram todos os que encontraram, maus e bons; e ficou cheia de convidados a sala das bodas. | 10 So these servants went out onto the roads and col ected together everyone they could find, bad andgood alike; and the wedding hal was fil ed with guests. |
| 11 Entrou depois o rei para ver os que estavam à mesa, e viu lá um homem que não estava vestido com veste nupcial. | 11 When the king came in to look at the guests he noticed one man who was not wearing a weddinggarment, |
| 12 E disse-lhe: Amigo, como entraste aqui, não tendo a veste nupcial? Ele, porém, emudeceu. | 12 and said to him, "How did you get in here, my friend, without a wedding garment?" And the man wassilent. |
| 13 Eutão o rei disse aos seus servos: Atai-o de pés e mãos, e lançai-o nas trevas exteriores; aí haverá pranto e ranger de dentes. | 13 Then the king said to the attendants, "Bind him hand and foot and throw him into the darknessoutside, where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth." |
| 14 Porque são muitos os chamados, e poucos os escolhidos." | 14 For many are invited but not al are chosen.' |
| 15 Então, retirando-se os fariseus, consultaram entre si como o surpreenderiam no que falasse. | 15 Then the Pharisees went away to work out between them how to trap him in what he said. |
| 16 Enviaram-lhe seus discípulos juntamente com os herodianos, os quais disseram: "Mestre, nós sabemos que és verdadeiro, e que ensinas o caminho de Deus segundo a verdade, sem atender a ninguém, porque não fazes acepção de pessoas. | 16 And they sent their disciples to him, together with some Herodians, to say, 'Master, we know that youare an honest man and teach the way of God in all honesty, and that you are not afraid of anyone, becausehuman rank means nothing to you. |
| 17 Diz-nos, pois, o teu parecer: É lícito dar o tributo a César ou não? " | 17 Give us your opinion, then. Is it permissible to pay taxes to Caesar or not?' |
| 18 Jesus, conhecendo a sua malícia, disse: "Porque me tentais, hipócritas? | 18 But Jesus was aware of their malice and replied, 'You hypocrites! Why are you putting me to thetest? |
| 19 "Mostrai-me a moeda do tributo." Eles lhe apresentaram um dinheiro. | 19 Show me the money you pay the tax with.' They handed him a denarius, |
| 20 E Jesus disse-lhes: "De quem é esta imagem e inscrição?" | 20 and he said, 'Whose portrait is this? Whose title?' |
| 21 Responderam: "De César." Então disse-lhes: "Dai, pois, a César o que é de César, e a Deus o que é de Deus." | 21 They replied, 'Caesar's.' Then he said to them, 'Very wel , pay Caesar what belongs to Caesar -- andGod what belongs to God.' |
| 22 Tendo ouvido isto, admiraram-se e, deixando-o, retiraram-se. | 22 When they heard this they were amazed; they left him alone and went away. |
| 23 Naquele dia foram ter com ele os saduceus, que negam a ressurreição, e interrogaram-no, | 23 That day some Sadducees -- who deny that there is a resurrection -- approached him and they putthis question to him, |
| 24 dizendo: "Mestre, Moisés disse: Se morrer algum homem sem ter filhos, seu irmão case-se com sua mulher, e dê descendência a seu irmão (Dt. 25, 5-6). | 24 'Master, Moses said that if a man dies childless, his brother is to marry the widow, his sister-in-law, toraise children for his brother. |
| 25 Ora entre nós havia sete irmãos. O primeiro, depois de casado, morreu, e, não tendo descendência, deixou sua mulher a seu irmão. | 25 Now we had a case involving seven brothers; the first married and then died without children, leavinghis wife to his brother; |
| 26 O mesmo sucedeu ao segundo e ao terceiro, até ao sétimo. | 26 the same thing happened with the second and third and so on to the seventh, |
| 27 Depois de todos, morreu também a mulher. | 27 and then last of al the woman herself died. |
| 28 Na ressurreição, de qual dos sete será a mulher, porque todos foram casados com ela?" | 28 Now at the resurrection, whose wife among the seven wil she be, since she had been married tothem al ?' |
| 29 Jesus, respondeu-lhes: "Errais, não compreendendo as Escrituras, nem o poder de Deus. | 29 Jesus answered them, 'You are wrong, because you understand neither the scriptures nor the powerof God. |
| 30 Porque na ressurreição, nem os homens terão mulheres, nem as mulheres maridos, mas serão como os anjos de Deus no céu. | 30 For at the resurrection men and women do not marry; no, they are like the angels in heaven. |
| 31 Acerca da ressurreição dos mortos, não tendes lido o que Deus vos disse: | 31 And as for the resurrection of the dead, have you never read what God himself said to you: |
| 32 Eu sou o Deus de Abraão, o Deus de Isaac, e o Deus de Jacob, (Ex. 3, 6). Ora ele não é Deus dos mortos, mas dos vivos." | 32 I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob? He is God, not of the dead, but ofthe living.' |
| 33 As turbas, ouvindo isto, admiravam-se da sua doutrina. | 33 And his teaching made a deep impression on the people who heard it. |
| 34 Os fariseus, tendo sabido que Jesus reduzira ao silêncio os saduceus, reuniram-se. | 34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees they got together |
| 35 Um deles, doutor da lei, tentando-o, perguntou-lhe: | 35 and, to put him to the test, one of them put a further question, |
| 36 "Mestre, qual é o maior mandamento da lei?" | 36 'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?' |
| 37 Jesus disse-lhe: "Amarás o Senhor teu Deus de todo o teu coração, de toda a tua alma, de todo o teu espirito (Dt. 6, 4-5). | 37 Jesus said to him, 'You must love the Lord your God with al your heart, with al your soul, and with alyour mind. |
| 38 Este é o maior e o primeiro mandamento. | 38 This is the greatest and the first commandment. |
| 39 O segundo é semelhante a este: Amarás o teu próximo como a ti mesmo (Lv. 19, 18). | 39 The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. |
| 40 Destes dois mandamentos depende toda a lei e os profetas." | 40 On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets too.' |
| 41 Estando juntos os fariseus, Jesus interrogou-os: | 41 While the Pharisees were gathered round, Jesus put to them this question, |
| 42 "Que vos parece do Cristo? De quem é ele filho?" Responderam-lhe: "De David." | 42 'What is your opinion about the Christ? Whose son is he?' They told him, 'David's.' |
| 43 Jesus disse-lhes: "Como, pois, lhe chama David, inspirado pelo Espírito, Senhor, dizendo: | 43 He said to them, 'Then how is it that David, moved by the Spirit, cal s him Lord, where he says: |
| 44 Disse o Senhor ao meu Senhor: Senta-te à minha mão direita, até que eu ponha os teus inimigos por escabelo de teus pés ? (Ps. 109, 1). | 44 The Lord declared to my Lord, take your seat at my right hand, til I have made your enemies yourfootstool? |
| 45 Se, pois, David o chama Senhor, como é ele seu filho ? " | 45 'If David cal s him Lord, how then can he be his son?' |
| 46 Ninguém podia responder-lhe uma só palavra. E daquele dia em diante não houve mais quem ousasse interrogá-lo. | 46 No one could think of anything to say in reply, and from that day no one dared to ask him any furtherquestions. |
