| 1 Grande preocupação foi imposta a todos os homens, pesado jugo carrega sobre os filhos de Adão, desde o dia em que eles saem do ventre de sua mãe, até ao da sua sepultura (em que eles entram) no seio da mãe comum de todos; | 1 Great labour is created for all men, and a heavy yoke is upon the children of Adam, from the day of their coming out of their mother's womb, until the day of their burial into the mother of all. |
| 2 Os seus pensamentos, os temores do coração, a apreensão do que esperam e o dia em que tudo acaba, (perturbam-nos a todos), | 2 Their thoughts, and fears of the heart, their imagination of things to come, and the day of their end: |
| 3 desde o que está sentado sobre um trono de glória, até àquele que jaz abatido na terra e na cinza; | 3 From him that sitteth on a glorious throne, unto him that is humbled in earth and ashes: |
| 4 desde aquele que está vestido de purpura e traz coroa, até ao que se cobre de pano grosseiro. Furor, inveja, inquietação, perplexidade, temor da morte, rancor obstinado e contendas (tudo isto faz sofrer o homem). | 4 From him that weareth purple, and beareth the crown, even to him that is covered with rough linen: wrath, envy, trouble, unquietness, and the fear of death, continual anger, and strife, |
| 5 Até no tempo em que repousa na cama, o sono da noite lhe perturba as ideias. | 5 And in the time of rest upon his bed, the sleep of the night changeth his knowledge. |
| 6 Breve ou quase nenhum é o seu repouso, e ainda no seu mesmo sono, como sentinela que está de guarda, | 6 A little and as nothing is his rest, and afterward in sleep, as in the day of keeping watch. |
| 7 é perturbado pelas visões do seu coração, como quem foge no dia da batalha; quando se imagina salvo, desperta, e admira-se do seu vão temor. | 7 He is troubled in the vision of his heart, as if he had escaped in the day of battle. In the time of his safety he rose up, and wondereth that there is no fear: |
| 8 Isto acontece a todos os viventes, desde os homens até aos animais, mas para os pecadores é sete vezes pior. | 8 Such things happen to all flesh, from man even to beast, and upon sinners are sevenfold mere. |
| 9 Além disso, a morte, o sangue, as contendas, a espada, as opressões, a fome a ruína e os (outros) flagelos, | 9 Moreover, death, and bloodshed, strife, and sword, oppressions, famine, and affliction, and scourges: |
| 10 tudo isto foi criado para os maus. e por causa deles (é que também) veio o dilúvio. | 10 All these things are created for the wicked, and for their sakes came the flood. |
| 11 Tudo o que é da terra, tornar-se-á em terra, como todas as águas voltam ao mar. | 11 All things that are of the earth, shall return to the earth again, and all waters shall return to the sea. |
| 12 Toda a dádiva (oferecida para corromper) e toda a (riqueza adquirida com) iniquidade perecerão, porém a rectidão subsistirá eternamente. | 12 All bribery, and injustice shall blotted out, and fidelity shall stand for ever. |
| 13 As riquezas dos injustos secar-se-ão como uma torrente, e farão muito estrondo como um grande trovão quando chove. | 13 The riches of the unjust shall be dried up like a river, and shall pass sway a noise like a great thunder in rain. |
| 14 Alegrar-se-á o homem, ao abrir as suas mãos; porém os prevaricadores serão completamente consumidos. | 14 While he openeth his hands he shall rejoice: but transgressors shall pine away in the end. |
| 15 Os descendentes dos ímpios não multiplicarão os ramos: são como raízes viciadas que se agitam no alto dum rochedo. | 15 The offspring of the ungodly shall not bring forth many branches, and make a noise as unclean roots upon the top of a rock. |
| 16 A verdura que cresce sobre as águas, à borda dum rio, será arrancada antes de toda a outra erva. | 16 The weed growing over every water, and at the bank of the river, shall be pulled up before all grass. |
| 17 A bondade é como um paraíso de bênçãos, e a misericórdia permanece para sempre. | 17 Grace is like a paradise in blessings, and mercy remaineth for ever. |
| 18 A vida do operário que se basta a si próprio será doce; acharás nela um tesouro. | 18 The life of a labourer that is content with what he hath, shall be sweet, and in it thou shalt find a treasure. |
| 19 Os filhos e a fundação duma cidade dão fama duradoira, mas será preferida a tudo isto uma mulher irrepreensível. | 19 Children, and the building of a city shall establish a name, but a blameless wife shall be counted above them both. |
| 20 O vinho e a música alegram o coração, mas o amor da sabedoria excede ambas estas coisas. | 20 Wine and music rejoice the heart, but the love of wisdom is above them both. |
| 21 A flauta e a harpa produzem uma suave melodia, mas a língua doce sobrepuja ambas estas coisas. A graça e a beleza deleitam a tua vista, mas a verdura dos campos leva vantagem a ambas estas coisas. | 21 The flute and the psaltery make a sweet melody, but a pleasant tongue is above them both. |
| 22 Thy eye desireth favour and beauty, but more than these green sown fields. |
| 23 O amigo e o companheiro auxiliam-se mutuamente na ocasião (própria), mas, mais do que estes dois, a mulher e o marido. | 23 A friend and companion meeting together in season, but above them both is a wife with her husband. |
| 24 Os irmãos são um auxílio no tempo da tribulação; porém a misericórdia livrará mais do que eles. | 24 Brethren are a help in the time of trouble, but mercy shall deliver more than they. |
| 25 O ouro e a prata são a firmeza dos pés; mas um bom conselho excede ambas estas coisas. | 25 Gold and silver make the feet stand sure: but wise counsel is above them both. |
| 26 As riquezas e a força exaltam o coração; mas o temor do Senhor avantaja-se a estas duas coisas. Nada falta ao que tem o temor do Senhor, e com ele não há necessidade de outro auxílio. | 26 Riches and strength lift up the heart: but above these is the fear of the Lord. |
| 27 There is no want in the fear of the Lord, and it needeth not to seek for help. |
| 28 O temor do Senhor é como um paraíso bem-dito; acha-se revestido duma glória superior a toda a glória. | 28 The fear of the Lord is like a paradise of blessing, and they have covered it above all glory. |
| 29 Filho, não leves vida de mendicante, porque é melhor morrer do que mendigar. | 29 My son, in thy lifetime be not indigent: for it is better to die than to want. |
| 30 A vida do homem, que se atém à mesa alheia, não é realmente vida, porque se alimenta com manjares dos outros. | 30 The life of him that looketh toward another man's table is not to be counted a life: for he feedeth his soul with another man's meat. |
| 31 Mas o varão bem educado e instruído se guardará disto. | 31 But a man, well instructed and taught, will look to himself. |
| 32 Na boca do insensato será doce a mendicidade, mas em seu ventre arderá como fogo. | 32 Begging will be sweet in the mouth of the unwise, but in his belly there shall burn a fire. |
