| 1 Havia na terra de Hus um homem, chamado Job. Este homem era sincero, recto, temia a Deus e fugia do mal. | 1 There was a man in the land of Hus, whose name was Job, and that man was simple and upright, and fearing God, and avoiding evil. |
| 2 Nasceram-lhe sete filhos e três filhas. | 2 And there were born to him seven sons and three daughters. |
| 3 Possuía sete mil ovelhas, três mil camelos, quinhentas juntas de bois, quinhentas jumentas e um grande número de servos. Este homem era o maior entre todos os Orientais. | 3 And his possession was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a family exceeding great: and this man was great among all the people of the east. |
| 4 Seus filhos iam e banqueteavam-se em suas casas, cada um em seu dia, e mandavam convidar suas três irmãs para irem comer e beber com eles. | 4 And his sons went, and made a feast by houses every one in his day. And sending they called their three sisters to eat and drink with them. |
| 5 Tendo decorrido o turno dos dias de banquete, Job mandava chamar seus filhos, purificava-os e, levantando-se de madrugada, oferecia holocausto por cada um deles, porque dizia: Talvez meus filhos tenham pecado, ofendido a Deus nos seus corações. Assim fazia Job de cada vez. | 5 And when the days of their feasting were gone about, Job sent to them, and sanctified them: and rising up early offered holocausts for every one of them. For he said: Lest perhaps my sons have sinned, and have blessed God in their hearts. So did Job all days. |
| 6 Porém um certo dia, tendo-se os filhos de Deus (isto é, os anjos) apresentado diante do Senhor, encontrou-se também Satanás entre eles. | 6 Now on a certain day when the sons of God came to stand before the Lord, Satan also was present among them. |
| 7 O Senhor disse-lhe: Donde vens tu? Ele respondeu: Venho de dar uma volta pela terra e de passear por ela. | 7 And the Lord said to him: Whence comest thou ? And he answered and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it. |
| 8 O Senhor disse-lhe: Porventura consideraste o meu servo Job? Não há semelhante a ele na terra: homem sincero e recto, teme a Deus e foge do mal? | 8 And the Lord said to him: Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a simple and upright man, and fearing God, and avoiding evil? |
| 9 Satanás, respondeu: Porventura Job teme (ou serve) debalde a Deus? | 9 And Satan answering, said: Doth Job fear God in vain ? |
| 10 Não o cercaste de um vaiado protetor, a ele, à sua casa e a todos os seus bens? Não abençoaste as obras de suas mãos, e os seus bens não se têm multiplicado sobre a terra? | 10 Hast not thou made a fence for him, and his house, and all his substance round about, blessed the works of his hands, and his possession hath increased on the earth ? |
| 11 Mas estende tu um pouco a tua mão, toca em tudo o que ele possui, e verás se ele te não amaldiçoa na tua face. | 11 But stretch forth thy hand a little, and touch all that he hath, and see if he blesseth thee not to thy face. |
| 12 Disse, pois, o Senhor a Satanás: Pois bem, tudo o que ele tem está era teu poder; sòmente não estendas a tua mão contra ele. Satanás saiu da presença do Senhor. | 12 Then the Lord said to Satan: Behold, all that he hath is in thy hand: only put not forth thy hand upon his person. And Satan went forth from the presence of the Lord. |
| 13 Um dia, enquanto os filhos e as filhas de Job estavam comendo e bebendo vinho em casa do seu irmão primogênito, | 13 Now upon a certain day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother, |
| 14 foi ter com Job um mensageiro, que lhe disse: Os bois lavravam, e as jumentas pastavam junto deles; | 14 There came a messenger to Job, and said: The oxen were ploughing, and the asses feeding beside them, |
| 15 de repente acometeram-nos os Sabeus, que levaram tudo e passaram à espada os criados; só eu escapei para te trazer a nova. | 15 And the Sabeans rushed in, and took all away, and slew the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell thee. |
| 16 Estando ainda este a falar, veio outro e disse: O fogo de Deus caiu do céu, e, ferindo as ovelhas e os pastores, consumiu-os; escapei eu só para te trazer a nova. | 16 And while he was yet speaking, another came, and said: The fire of God fell from heaven, and striking the sheep and the servants, hath consumed them, and I alone have escaped to tell thee. |
| 17 Ainda este falava, quando chegou outro, que disse: Os Caldeus dividiram-se era três esquadrões, lançaram-se sobre os camelos e levaram-nos, e passaram à espada os criados; só eu escapei para te trazer a nova. | 17 And while he also was yet speaking, there came another, and said: The Chaldeans made three troops, and have fallen upon the camels, and taken them, moreover they have slain the servants with the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell thee. |
| 18 Ainda este estava falando, quando entrou outro, que disse: Estando teus filhos e filhas comendo e, bebendo vinho em casa de seu irmão mais velho, | 18 He was yet speaking, and behold another came in, and said: Thy sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their elder brother: |
| 19 de repente levantou-se um vento muito forte da banda do deserto, que abalou os quatro cantos da casa, a qual, caindo, esmagou os teus filhos, que morreram; só escapei eu para te trazer a nova. | 19 A violent wind came on a sudden from the side of the desert, and shook the four corners of the house, and it fell upon thy children and they are dead, and I alone have escaped to fell thee. |
| 20 Então levantou-se Job, rasgou as suas vestes e rapou a cabeça; depois prostrou-se por terra, adorou (o Senhor) | 20 Then Job rose up, and rent his garments, and having shaven his head fell down upon the ground and worshipped, |
| 21 e disse: Nu saí do ventre de minha mãe, e nu tornarei para lá (para o seio da terra); o Senhor o deu, o Senhor o tirou, como foi do agrado do Senhor, assim sucedeu; bendito seja o nome do Senhor. | 21 And said: Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away: as it hath pleased the Lord so is it done: blessed be the name of the Lord. |
| 22 Em todas estas coisas Job não pecou com os seus lábios, nem disse coisa alguma insensata contra Deus. | 22 In all these things Job sinned not by his lips, nor spoke he any foolish thing against God. |
