| 1 Depois disto Davide consultou o Senhor, dizendo: Irei eu para alguma das cidades de Judá? O Senhor respondeu-lhe: Vai. Davide disse: Para onde irei? O Senhor respondeu-lhe: Para Hebron. | 1 After this David consulted Yahweh, asking, 'Shal I go up to one of the towns of Judah?' Yahwehreplied, 'Go up!' 'Which one shal I go to?' David asked. 'To Hebron,' was the reply. |
| 2 Foi, pois, Davide com as suas duas mulheres, Aquinoão de Jezrael, e Abigail, viúva de Nabal do Carmelo. | 2 So David went up, with his two wives Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail widow of Nabal of Carmel. |
| 3 Levou também a gente que estava com ele, cada um com a sua família, ficando todos a morar nas povoações de Hebron. | 3 In addition David brought up the men who were with him, each with his family, and they settled in thetowns of Hebron. |
| 4 Vieram os homens de Judá, e ungiram ali Davide, para reinar sobre a casa de Judá. Soube Davide que os homens de Jabes de Galaad tinham sepultado Saul; | 4 The men of Judah came, and there they anointed David as king of the House of Judah. They told Davidthat the people of Jabesh in Gilead had given Saul burial, |
| 5 e enviou mensageiros aos homens de Jabes de Galaad, a dizer-lhes: Bem-ditos sejais do Senhor, vós que praticastes esta obra de misericórdia com Saul, vosso senhor, dando-lhe sepultura. | 5 so David sent messengers to the people of Jabesh in Gilead. 'May you be blessed by Yahweh,' he said,'for showing this faithful love to Saul your lord, and for burying him. |
| 6 Agora o Senhor vos recompensará certamente segundo a sua misericórdia e verdade. Eu também vos agradecerei esta acção que fizestes. | 6 And now may Yahweh show faithful love and constancy towards you! I too shall treat you wel becauseyou have done this. |
| 7 Cobrem alento as vossas mãos, sede fortes, porque, ainda que tenha morrido Saul, vosso senhor, a casa de Judá ungiu-me por seu rei. | 7 And now take courage and be men of valour. Saul your lord is dead, but the House of Judah hasanointed me to be their king.' |
| 8 Abner, porém, filho de Ner, general do exército de Saul tomou Isboset, filho de Saul, levou-o por todo o acampamento | 8 Abner son of Ner, Saul's army commander, had taken Ishbaal son of Saul and brought him over toMahanaim. |
| 9 e constituiu-o rei sobre Galaad, sobre Gessuri, sobre Jezrael, sobre Efraim, sobre Benjamim e sobre todo o Israel. | 9 He had made him king of Gilead, of the Asherites, of Jezreel, of Ephraim, of Benjamin and indeed of allIsrael. |
| 10 Isboset, filho de Saul, tinha quarenta anos, quando começou a reinar em Israel, e reinou dois anos. Só a casa de Judá seguiu Davide. | 10 Ishbaal son of Saul was forty years old when he became king of Israel, and he reigned for two years.Only the House of Judah supported David. |
| 11 O tempo que Davide reinou, em Hebron, sobre a casa de Judá, foi de sete anos e seis meses. | 11 The length of David's reign over Judah in Hebron was seven years and six months. |
| 12 Abner, filho de Ner, com a gente de Isboset, filho de Saul, saiu do acampamento e foi para Gabaon. | 12 Abner son of Ner, with the retainers of Ishbaal son of Saul, marched out from Mahanaim to Gibeon. |
| 13 Joab, filho de Sarvia, e os homens de Davide, saíram e encontraram-se com eles perto da piscina de Gabaon. Tendo-se aproximado, acamparam uns dum lado da piscina, e outros do outro lado. | 13 Joab son of Zeruiah, with David's retainers, also took the field, encountering them at the pool ofGibeon. There they halted, one party on one side of the pool, and the other opposite. |
| 14 Abner disse a Joab: Saiam alguns jovens, e escaramucem diante de nós. Joab respondeu: Saiam. | 14 Abner then said to Joab, 'Let the men come forward and fight it out between us!' Joab replied, 'Letthem come forward.' |
| 15 Levamtaram-se e avançaram, em número igual, doze de Benjamim, por parte de Isboset, filho de Saul, e doze da gente de Davide. | 15 So they came forward and were numbered off, twelve from Benjamin for Ishbaal son of Saul, andtwelve of David's retainers. |
| 16 Cada um (destes) tomando pela cabeça o seu opositor, enterrou a espada no costado do seu contrário, e morreram (todos) ao mesmo tempo. Por isso foi dado àquele lugar o nome de Campo dos valentes de Gabaon. | 16 Each caught his opponent by the head and drove his sword into his side; and thus they al felltogether. Hence the place was cal ed the Field of Sides; it is at Gibeon. |
| 17 Seguiu-se uma crua batalha naquele dia, e Abner e os homens de Israel foram postos em fuga pelas tropas de Davide. | 17 That day a very fierce battle took place, and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten by David'sretainers. |
| 18 Estavam ali os três filhos de Sarvia, Joab, Abisai e Asael. Asael era muito ligeiro na carreira, como uma gazela selvagem. | 18 The three sons of Zeruiah were there, Joab, Abishai, and Asahel. Now Asahel could run like a wildgazel e. |
| 19 (Ora) Asael perseguia Abner, e não declinava nem para a direita nem para a esquerda, correndo incessantemente atrás dele. | 19 Asahel chased Abner, not swerving to the right or left from pursuing him. |
| 20 Abner voltou-se para trás e disse: Tu não és Asael? Ele respondeu: Sou eu. | 20 Abner turned and said, 'Asahel, is that you?' He replied, 'It is.' |
| 21 Abner disse-lhe: Vai para a direita ou para a esquerda, apanha algum desses jovens, e toma os seus despojos. Mas Asael não quis deixar de o perseguir. | 21 Abner said, 'Turn to your right or your left, catch one of the men and take his spoil!' But Asahel wouldnot break off the pursuit. |
| 22 Abner disse outra vez a Asael: Retira-te, não me sigas, para que eu não me veja obrigado a atravessar-te, e não possa eu mais aparecer diante de teu irmão Joab. | 22 Again Abner spoke to Asahel, 'Stop following me, unless you want me to strike you to the ground; andthen how could I look your brother Joab in the face?' |
| 23 Asael desprezou ouvi-lo e não quis desviar-se. Então Abner feriu-o no ventre com a parte inferior da lança, saindo a lança por trás. Morreu ali mesmo, onde caiu. Todos os que passavam por aquele lugar, em que Asael caíra morto, paravam. | 23 But he refused to be diverted, so Abner struck him in the belly with the butt of his spear so that theshaft came out through his back; and he fell at his feet and died on the spot. On coming to the place whereAsahel had fal en and died, everyone halted. |
| 24 Enquanto Joab e Abisai seguiam Abner, que ia fugindo, pôs-se o sol, ao chegarem ao outeiro do aqueduto, que está defronte do vale, sobre o caminho do deserto de Gabaon. | 24 Joab and Abishai took up the pursuit of Abner and at sunset reached the Hil of Ammah, which is tothe east of Giah on the road through the desert of Gibeon. |
| 25 Os filhos de Benjamim uniram-se com Abner, e, cerrados num batalhão, fizeram alto no cimo de um cabeço. | 25 The Benjaminites gathered in close formation behind Abner and halted on the top of a hil . |
| 26 Abner, gritando a Joab, disse: Não se saciará de sangue a tua espada? Ignoras porventura que, no fim, vem a desesperação? Para quando guardas dizer ao povo que deixe de perseguir seus irmãos? | 26 Abner cal ed out to Joab, 'Is the sword to go on devouring for ever? Surely you see that this can onlyend in bitterness? How long wil it be before you order those people to stop pursuing their brothers?' |
| 27 Joab respondeu: Viva o Senhor, que se não tivesses falado, o povo não deixaria de perseguir seus irmãos, antes de amanhã, de manhã. | 27 Joab replied, 'As Yahweh lives, if you had not spoken, these men would not have given up the pursuitof their brothers until morning.' |
| 28 Joab tocou a trombeta, e todo o exército fez alto; não perseguiram mais Israel, nem travaram mais combate. | 28 Joab then sounded the trumpet and all the troops halted; they pursued Israel no further and fought nomore. |
| 29 Abner e os seus caminharam pela planície toda aquela noite, passaram o Jordão e, percorrido todo o país de Bet-horon, chegaram ao seu acampamento. | 29 Al that night Abner and his men made their way through the Arabah; they crossed the Jordan and,marching throughout the morning, came to Mahanaim. |
| 30 Joab, tendo desistido de perseguir Abner, voltando para trás, juntou todo o povo. Da gente de Davide faltaram dezanove homens, sem contar Asael. | 30 Joab, having stopped pursuing Abner, mustered the whole contingent; David's retainers had lostnineteen men in addition to Asahel, |
| 31 Os soldados de Davide tinham ferido, dos de Benjamim e dos que estavam com Abner, trezentos e setenta homens, que morreram. | 31 but had killed three hundred and sixty of Benjamin, Abner's men. |
| 32 Tomaram (o corpo de) Asael e enterraram-no na sepultura de seu pai em Belém. Marcharam, toda a noite, Joab e os homens que estavam com ele, e ao raiar do dia chegaram a Hebron. | 32 They took up Asahel and buried him in his father's tomb, which is at Bethlehem. Joab and his menthen marched throughout the night, reaching Hebron at daybreak. |
