| 1 Dois anos depois Faraó teve um sonho. Parecia-lhe que estava na margem do rio, | 1 After two years Pharao had a dream. He thought he stood by the river, |
| 2 do qual saiam sete vacas, muito formosas e gordas, as quais pastavam nos lugares palustres. | 2 Out of which came up seven kine, very beautiful and fat: and they fed in marshy places. |
| 3 Saiam também outras sete do rio, desfiguradas e consumidas de magreza, as quais pastavam na mesma margem do rio, em lugares cheios de erva: | 3 Other seven also came up out of the river, ill favoured, and leanfleshed: and they fed on the very bank of the river, in green places: |
| 4 (estas) devoravam aquelas que eram belas de aspecto e gordas de corpo. Tendo Faraó despertado, | 4 And they devoured them, whose bodies were very beautiful and well conditioned. So Pharao awoke. |
| 5 adormeceu novamente, e teve outro sonho; sete espigas saiam do mesmo caule, cheias de grãos e formosas; | 5 dummy verses inserted by amos |
| 6 e nasciam também outras tantas espigas delgadas e queimadas do vento, | 6 He slept again, and dreamed another dream: Seven ears of corn came up upon one stalk full and fair: |
| 7 as quais devoravam todas as primeiras que eram tão belas. Despertando Faraó do sono, | |
| 8 de manhã, cheio de pavor, mandou chamar todos os adivinhos do Egito e todos os sábios; estando reunidos, contou-lhes o sonho e não havia quem lho esplicasse. | 8 Then seven other ears sprung up thin and blasted, |
| 9 Então, finalmente, lembrando-se o copeiro-mór (de José) disse: Confesso a minha falta. | 9 And devoured all the beauty of the former. Pharao awaked after his rest: |
| 10 Tendo-se o rei irado contra os seus servos, mandou que eu e o padeiro-mór fôssemos metidos no cárcere do chefe da guarda; | 10 And when morning was come, being struck with fear, he sent to all the interpreters of Egypt, and to all the wise men: and they being called for, he told them his dream, and there was not any one that could interpret it. |
| 11 ai, uma noite, ambos nós tivemos um sonho que presagiava o futuro. | 11 Then at length the chief butler remembering, said: I confess my sin: |
| 12 Achava-se lá um jovem hebreu, servo do mesmo chefe da guarda. Tendo-lhe nós referidos os sonhos, | 12 The king being angry with his servants, commanded me and the chief baker to be cast into the prison of the captain of the soldiers: |
| 13 ouvimos tudo o que depois os factos comprovaram: Eu fui restituído ao meu ofício e o outro foi pendurado em uma forca. | 13 Where in one night both of us dreamed a dream foreboding things to come. |
| 14 Imediatamente José foi tirado do cárcere por mandado do rei. Barbeou-se, mudou de roupa e foi ter com Faraó. | 14 There was there a young man a Hebrew, servant to the same captain of the soldiers: to whom we told our dreams, |
| 15 Este disse-lhe; Tive uns sonhos, e não há quem os interprete; ouvi dizer que tu sabes explicar os sonhos que te contam. | 15 And we heard what afterwards the event of the thing proved to be so. For I was restored to my office: and he was hanged upon a gibbet. |
| 16 José respondeu: Não sou eu, é Deus quem dará uma resposta favorável a Faraó, | 16 Forthwith at the king's command, Joseph was brought out of the prison, and they shaved him, and changing his apparel, brought him in to him. |
| 17 Faraó, pois, contou o que tinha visto: Parecia-me estar sobre a margem do rio, | 17 And he said to him: I have dreamed dreams, and there is no one that can expound them: Now I have heard that thou art very wise at interpreting them. |
| 18 e que saíam do rio sete vacas, em extremo formosas, e muito gordas, as quais pastavam a erva verde nos lugares palustres; | 18 Joseph answered: Without me, God shall give Pharao a prosperous answer. |
| 19 a seguir, atrás destas, vinham outras sete vacas tão disformes e magras, que nunca as vi semelhantes na terra do Egito, | 19 So Pharao told what he had dreamed: Methought I stood upon the bank of the river, |
| 20 as quais devoraram e consumiram as primeiras, | 20 And seven kine came up out of the river exceeding beautiful and full of flesh: and they grazed on green places in a marshy pasture. |
| 21 Sem que parecessem tê-las engolido, pois ficaram tão macilentas e feias como antes. Acordei, fui novamente oprimido pelo sono, | 21 And behold, there followed these, other seven kine, so very ill favoured and lean, that I never saw the like in the land of Egypt: |
| 22 e tive este sonho: sete espigas saíam do mesmo caule cheias (de grãos) e formosas: | 22 And the devoured and consumed the former, |
| 23 outras sete, delgadas e queimadas do vento nasciam doutro caule, | 23 And yet gave no mark of their being full: but were as lean and ill favoured as before. I awoke, and then fell asleep again, |
| 24 as quais devoravam as primeiras, que eram tão belas. Referi aos adivinhos o sonho, e não há quem o explique. | 24 And dreamed a dream: Seven ears of corn grew upon one stalk, full and very fair. |
| 25 José respondeu: O sonho do rei reduz-se a um só: Deus mostrou a Faraó o que está para fazer. | 25 Other seven also thin and blasted, sprung of the stock: |
| 26 As sete vacas formosas, e as sete espigas cheias, (de grãos), são sete anos de abundância: no sonho têm a mesma significação. | 26 And they devoured the beauty of the former: I told this dream to the conjecturers, and there is no man that can expound it. |
| 27 As sete vacas magras e macilentas, que subiram (do rio) após as primeiras, e as sete espigas delgadas e queimadas do vento, são sete anos de fome que estão para vir. | 27 Joseph answered: The king's dream is one: God hath shewn to Pharao what he is about to do. |
| 28 Isto cumprir-se-á por esta ordem: | 28 The seven beautiful kine, and the seven full ears, are seven years of plenty: and both contain the same meaning of the dream. |
| 29 virão sete anos de grande fertilidade por toda a terra do Egito, | 29 And the seven lean and thin kine that came up after them, and the seven thin ears that were blasted with the burning wind, are seven years of famine to come: |
| 30 depois dos quais se seguirão outros sete anos de tanta esterilidade que será esquecida toda a abundância passada; com efeito, a fome há-de consumir toda a terra. | 30 Which shall be fulfilled in this order: |
| 31 e a grandeza da penúria há-de absorver a grandeza da abundância. | 31 Behold, there shall come seven years of great plenty in the whole land of Egypt: |
| 32 Quanto ao segundo sonho que tivestes, que se refere à mesma coisa, é um sinal certo de que se há-de executar a palavra de Deus, e prontamente se cumprirá. | 32 After which shall follow other seven years of so great scacity, that all the abundance before shall be forgotten: for the famine shall consume all the land, |
| 33 Agora, pois, escolha, o rei um homem sábio e ativo, a quem dê autoridade sobre a terra do Egito: | 33 And the greatness of the scarcity shall destroy the greatness of the plenty. |
| 34 este ;(homem) estabeleça superintendentes por todas as províncias: a quinta parte dos frutos nos sete anos de fertilidade, | 34 And for that thou didst see the second time a dream pertaining to the same thing: it is a token of the certainty, and that the word of God cometh to pass, and is fulfilled speedily. |
| 35 que já estão para começar, seja recolhida nos celeiros: guarde-se todo o trigo debaixo do poder do Faraó, conserve-se nas cidades, | 35 Now therefore let the king provide a wise and industrious man, and make him ruler over the land of Egypt: |
| 36 e tenha-se preparado para a futura fome dos sete anos, que há-de oprimir o Egito. Assim o país não será consumido pela fome. | 36 That he may appoint overseers over all the countries: and gather into barns the fifth part of the fruits, during the seven fruitful years, |
| 37 Agradou o conselho a Faraó e a todos os seus ministros. | 37 That shall now presently ensue: and let all the corn be laid up under Pharao's hands and be reserved in the cities. |
| 38 Disse-lhes: Poderemos nós encontrar um homem como este, que esteja (tão) cheio de espirito de Deus? | 38 And let it be in readiness, against the famine of seven years to come, which shall oppress Egypt, and the land shall not consumed with scarcity. |
| 39 Disse, pois, a José; Visto que Deus te manifestou tudo o que disseste, poderei eu encontrar alguém mais inteligente e sábio do que tu? | 39 The counsel pleased Pharao and all his servants. |
| 40 Tu governarás a minha casa, e, ao mando da tua voz, obedecerá todo o povo; eu não terei sobre ti outra precedência além do trono. | 40 And he said to them: Can we find such another man, that is full of the spirit of God? |
| 41 Faraó disse mais a José: Dou-te autoridade sobre toda a terra do Egito. | 41 He said therefore to Joseph: Seeing God hath shewn thee all that thou hast said, can I find one wiser and one like unto thee? |
| 42 E tirou o anel da sua mão, meteu-o na mão dele, mandou-lhe um hábito branco de linho fino, e pôs-lhe ao pescoço um colar de oiro; | 42 Thou shalt be over my house, and at the commandment of thy mouth all the people shall obey: only in the kingly throne will I be above thee. |
| 43 fê-lo subir para o seu segundo coche, clamando o pregoeiro que todos ajoelhassem, diante dele, e soubessem que era o superintendente de toda a terra do Egito. | 43 And again Pharao said to Joseph: Behold, I have appointed thee over the whole land of Egypt. |
| 44 Disse também o rei a José: Eu sou Faraó; sem o teu mando ninguém moverá mão ou pé em toda a terra do Egito. | 44 And he took his ring from his own hand, and gave it into his hand: and he put upon him a robe of silk, and put a chain of gold about his neck. |
| 45 Mudou-lhe o nome, e chamou-o, na lingua egípcia, Salvador do Mundo. Deu-lhe por mulher a Aseneth, filha de Putifar, sacerdote de Heliópolis. Saiu, portanto, José a correr a terra do Egito, | 45 And he made him go up into his second chariot, the crier proclaiming that all should bow their knee before him, and that they should know he was made govenor over the whole land of Egypt. |
| 46 (tinha trinta anos quando se apresentou diante do rei Faraó), e percorreu todas as provindas do Egito. | 46 And the king said to Joseph: I am Pharao; without thy commandment no man shall move hand or foot in all the land of Egypt. |
| 47 Veio a fertilidade dos sete anos, e, atado o trigo aos molhos, foi recolhido nos celeiros do Egito. | 47 And he turned his name, and called him in the Eyyptian tounge, The saviour of the world. And he gave him to wife Asenth the daughter of Putiphare priest of Heliopolis. Then Joseph went out to the land of Egypt: |
| 48 Recolheu-se também em cada uma das cidades toda a abundância de frutos. | 48 (Now he was thirty years old when he stood before king Pharao) and he went round all the countries of Egypt. |
| 49 Foi tanta a abundância do trigo, que igualava a areia do mar, e a quantidade excedia toda a medida. | 49 And the fruitfulness of the seven years came: and the corm being bound up into sheaves was gathered together into the barns of Egypt. |
| 50 Nasceram a José dois filhos antes de chegar a fome, os quais lhe foram dados à luz por Aseneth, filha de Putifar, sacerdote de Heliópolis. | 50 And all the abundance of grain was laid up in every city. |
| 51 Ao primogênito pôs o nome de Manassés, dizendo: Deus me fez esquecer de todos os meus trabalhos, e da casa de meu pai. | 51 And there was so great abundance of wheat, that it was equal to the sand of the sea, and the plenty exceeded measure. |
| 52 Ao segundo pôs o nome de Efraim, dizendo: Deus me fez crescer, na terra da minha aflição. | 52 And before the famine came, Joseph had two sons born: whom Aseneth the daughter of Putiphare priest of Heliopolis bore unto him. |
| 53 Passados os sete anos da abundância, que houve no Egito, | 53 And he called the name of the first born Manasses, saying: God hath made me to forget all my labours, and my father's house. |
| 54 começaram a vir os sete anos de escassez que José prognosticara. Em todo o mundo, se fez sentir a fome: porém em toda a terra do Egito havia pão. | 54 And he named the second Epharaim, saying: God hath made me to grow in the land of my poverty. |
| 55 Quando também o Egito sentiu a fome, o povo clamou a Faraó, pedindo sustento. Ele respondeu-lhes: Ide a José e fazei tudo o que ele vos disser. | 55 Now when the seven years of the plenty that had been in Egypt were past: |
| 56 Ora a fome crescia todos os dias em toda a terra, e José abriu todos os celeiros, e vendia aos Egípcios, porque também a eles oprimia a fome. | 56 The seven years of scarcity, which Joseph had foretold, began to come: and the famine prevailed in the whole world, but there was bread in all the land of Egypt. |
| 57 De todas as partes vinham ao Egito, para comprar de comer porque a fome era grande em toda a terra. | 57 And when there also they began to be famished, the people cried to Pharao for food. And he said to them: Go to Joseph: and do all that he shall say to you. |
| 58 And the famine increased daily in all the land: and Joseph opened all the barns, and sold to the Egyptians: for the famine had oppressed them also. |
