| 1 Tendo partido (daquele lugar), Jacob dirigiu-se para o pais do oriente. | 1 Then Jacob went on his journey, and came into the land of the people of the east. |
| 2 Viu um poço no campo, e, repousando junto dele, três rebanhos de ovelhas, porque dele se dava de beber aos rebanhos. A sua boca estava tapada com uma grande pedra. | 2 And he looked, and behold a well in the field, and, lo, there were three flocks of sheep lying by it; for out of that well they watered the flocks: and a great stone was upon the well's mouth. |
| 3 Era costume (só) tirarem a pedra depois de estarem reunidos todos os rebanhos, e, depois que eles tinham bebido, tornavam-na a colocar sobre a boca do poço. | 3 And thither were all the flocks gathered: and they rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone again upon the well's mouth in his place. |
| 4 (Jacob) disse aos pastores: Irmãos, donde sois vós? Eles responderam: De Haran. | 4 And Jacob said unto them, My brethren, whence be ye? And they said, Of Haran are we. |
| 5 Perguntou-lhes: Conheceis porventura Labão, filho de Nacor? Disseram: Conhecemos. | 5 And he said unto them, Know ye Laban the son of Nahor? And they said, We know him. |
| 6 Está de saúde? perguntou ele. Está bom, responderam, e até aqui vem Raquel, sua filha, com o seu rebanho. | 6 And he said unto them, Is he well? And they said, He is well: and, behold, Rachel his daughter cometh with the sheep. |
| 7 Jacob disse; Ainda é muito dia, e ainda não é tempo de se recolherem os rebanhos aos currais: dai primeiro de beber às ovelhas, e depois reconduzi-as ao pasto. | 7 And he said, Lo, it is yet high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together: water ye the sheep, and go and feed them. |
| 8 Eles responderam: Não o podemos fazer enquanto não estejam juntas todas as ovelhas, e não tiremos a pedra da boca do poço, para darmos de beber a todos os rebanhos (conjuntamente). | 8 And they said, We cannot, until all the flocks be gathered together, and till they roll the stone from the well's mouth; then we water the sheep. |
| 9 Ainda eles estavam falando, quando Raquel chegava com as ovelhas de seu pai, porque ela pastoreava o rebanho. | 9 And while he yet spake with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep: for she kept them. |
| 10 Jacob, tendo-a visto e sabendo que era sua prima, e que as ovelhas eram de Labão, seu tio, tirou a pedra que tapava o poço. | 10 And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the flock of Laban his mother's brother. |
| 11 Depois de ter dado de beber ao seu rebanho, beijou-a, e, levantando a voz, chorou, | 11 And Jacob kissed Rachel, and lifted up his voice, and wept. |
| 12 e declarou que era irmão de seu pai, e filho de Rebeca. Ela, correndo, foi noticiá-lo a seu pai, | 12 And Jacob told Rachel that he was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son: and she ran and told her father. |
| 13 o qual, tendo ouvido que tinha chegado Jacob filho de sua irmã, correu ao seu encontro, abraçou-o, beijou-o muitas vezes e levou-o a sua casa. Ouvidos os motivos da sua viagem, | 13 And it came to pass, when Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban all these things. |
| 14 respondeu: Tu és meu osso te minha carne. E, tendo passado Jacob um mês inteiro com Labão, | 14 And Laban said to him, Surely thou art my bone and my flesh. And he abode with him the space of a month. |
| 15 disse-lhe este: Acaso, porque és meu irmão, me servirás de graça? Dize-me que paga queres. | 15 And Laban said unto Jacob, Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for nought? tell me, what shall thy wages be? |
| 16 Ora Labão tinha duas filhas: a mais velha chamava-se Lia, e a mais nova Raquel. | 16 And Laban had two daughters: the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. |
| 17 Lia, porém, tinha os olhos remelosos, enquanto que Raquel era formosa de rosto, e de gentil presença. | 17 Leah was tender eyed; but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured. |
| 18 Jacob, tendo-lhe amor, disse (a Labão); Eu te servirei sete anos por Raquel, tua filha mais nova. | 18 And Jacob loved Rachel; and said, I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter. |
| 19 Labão respondeu: Melhor é que eu a dê a ti do que a outro homem; fica comigo. | 19 And Laban said, It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her to another man: abide with me. |
| 20 Jacob, pois, serviu sete anos por Raquel, e estes lhe pareceram poucos dias pela grandeza do amor (que lhe tinha). | 20 And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her. |
| 21 E disse a Labão: Dá-me a minha mulher, pois já está completo o tempo de eu a tomar por esposa, | 21 And Jacob said unto Laban, Give me my wife, for my days are fulfilled, that I may go in unto her. |
| 22 (Labão) fez as bodas, tendo convidado para o banquete uma grande turba de amigos. | 22 And Laban gathered together all the men of the place, and made a feast. |
| 23 À noite, levou sua filha Lia a Jacob, | 23 And it came to pass in the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he went in unto her. |
| 24 dando à filha uma escrava chamada Zelfa. Jacob, tendo ficado com ela segundo o costume, viu pela manhã que era Lia, | 24 And Laban gave unto his daughter Leah Zilpah his maid for an handmaid. |
| 25 e disse ao seu sogro: Que é isto que me quiseste fazer? Porventura não te servi eu por Raquel? Porque razão me enganaste? | 25 And it came to pass, that in the morning, behold, it was Leah: and he said to Laban, What is this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore then hast thou beguiled me? |
| 26 Labão respondeu: No nosso pais não é costume casarem-se as mais novas primeiro. | 26 And Laban said, It must not be so done in our country, to give the younger before the firstborn. |
| 27 Acaba a semana destas núpcias e dar-te-ei também a outra pelo trabalho que me prestarás durante outros sete anos, | 27 Fulfil her week, and we will give thee this also for the service which thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years. |
| 28 Acomodou-se (Jacob) à proposta, e, passada a semana, casou-se com Raquel, | 28 And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also. |
| 29 à qual o pai tinha dado a (sua) escrava Bala. | 29 And Laban gave to Rachel his daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her maid. |
| 30 E (Jacob), tendo enfim alcançado as núpcias desejadas, preferiu no seu amor a segunda à primeira, e continuou servindo Labão outros sete anos. | 30 And he went in also unto Rachel, and he loved also Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet seven other years. |
| 31 Mas o Senhor, vendo que ele desprezava Lia, tornou-a fecunda, permanecendo estéril a irmã. | 31 And when the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb: but Rachel was barren. |
| 32 Lia concebeu e deu à luz um filho, e pôs-lhe o nome de Ruben, dizendo: O Senhor viu a minha humilhação, agora o meu marido me amará. | 32 And Leah conceived, and bare a son, and she called his name Reuben: for she said, Surely the LORD hath looked upon my affliction; now therefore my husband will love me. |
| 33 E concebeu novamente e deu à luz um filho, e disse: Porque o Senhor ouviu que eu era tratada com desprezo, me deu também este (filho); e pôs-lhe o nome de Simeão. | 33 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Because the LORD hath heard that I was hated, he hath therefore given me this son also: and she called his name Simeon. |
| 34 Concebeu terceira vez e deu à luz um outro filho, e disse: Agora se unirá (ainda mais) a mim o meu marido, porque lhe dei à luz três filhos; e por isso chamou a este Levi. | 34 And she conceived again, and bare a son; and said, Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because I have born him three sons: therefore was his name called Levi. |
| 35 Concebeu quarta vez e deu à luz um filho, e disse: Agora louvarei o Senhor e por isso pôs-lhe o nome de Judá. E cessou de dar à luz. | 35 And she conceived again, and bare a son: and she said, Now will I praise the LORD: therefore she called his name Judah; and left bearing. |
