| 1 Jó tomou a palavra nestes termos: | 1 Then Job, answering, said: |
| 2 “Sois mesmo gente muito hábil, e convosco morrerá a sabedoria! | 2 Are you, therefore, alone among men, and will wisdom die with you? |
| 3 Tenho também o espírito como o vosso, e não vos sou inferior! Quem, pois, ignoraria o que sabeis? | 3 And I have a heart just as you also do, and I am not inferior to you. For who is ignorant of these things, which you know? |
| 4 Os amigos escarnecem daquele que invoca a Deus, para que ele lhe responda. Sim, zombam do justo e do inocente. | 4 He who is mocked by his friends as I am, will call upon God, and he will listen to him because it is the sincerity of the just that is being mocked. |
| 5 ‘Vergonha para a infelicidade!’ – assim pensam os felizes. Só há desprezo para aquele cujo pé fraqueja. | 5 The lamp that is despised in the thoughts of the rich is ready for the appointed time. |
| 6 As tendas dos bandidos gozam de paz, e segurança para aqueles que provocam a Deus, que não têm outro Deus senão o próprio braço. | 6 The tabernacles of robbers are numerous, and they provoke God boldly; whereas, it is he who has given all things into their hands. |
| 7 Pergunta, pois, aos animais da terra, eles te ensinarão; e às aves do céu, e elas te instruirão. | 7 In truth, ask the mules, and they will teach you, and the birds of the sky, and they will reveal to you. |
| 8 Fala aos répteis da terra, e eles te responderão, e aos peixes do mar, e eles te contarão. | 8 Speak with the earth, and it will respond to you, and the fish of the sea will explain. |
| 9 Entre todos esses seres, quem não sabe que foi a mão de Deus que fez tudo isso?’ | 9 Who is ignorant that the hand of the Lord has made all these things? |
| 10 Ele que tem em mãos a alma de tudo o que vive e o sopro de vida de todo o gênero humano. | 10 In his hand is the soul of all the living and the spirit of all the flesh of mankind. |
| 11 Não discerne o ouvido as palavras, como o paladar discerne o sabor da comida? | 11 Does not the ear perceive words, and the palate, when eating, perceive flavor? |
| 12 A sabedoria pertence aos cabelos brancos, e à longa vida confere a inteligência. | 12 In old age is wisdom, and in length of days is prudence. |
| 13 Em Deus residem a sabedoria e o poder. Ele possui o conselho e a inteligência. | 13 With him is wisdom and strength, he has counsel and understanding. |
| 14 O que ele destrói não será reconstruído, se aprisionar um homem, ninguém há que o solte. | 14 If he tears down, there is no one who can build up; if he encloses a man, there is no one who can open. |
| 15 Quando faz as águas pararem, há seca; se as soltar, submergirão a terra. | 15 If he restrains the waters, everything will dry up; and if he sends them forth, they will subdue the land. |
| 16 Nele há força e prudência; ele conhece o que engana e o enganado. | 16 With him is strength and wisdom; he knows both the deceiver and he who is deceived. |
| 17 Faz os árbitros andarem descalços e torna os juízes estúpidos. | 17 He leads advisors to a foolish end and judges to stupidity. |
| 18 Ele desata a cinta dos reis e cinge-lhes os rins com uma corda. | 18 He removes the belt of kings and encircles their waist with a rope. |
| 19 Ele faz os sacerdotes andar descalços e abate os poderosos. | 19 He leads away priests in dishonor and displaces nobles, |
| 20 Ele tira a palavra aos mais seguros de si mesmos e retira a sabedoria dos anciãos. | 20 altering the lips of those who speak the truth and sweeping away the teaching of the aged. |
| 21 Ele derrama desprezo sobre os nobres e afrouxa a cinta dos fortes. | 21 He pours distain upon the leaders, relieving those who had been oppressed. |
| 22 Ele põe a claro os segredos das trevas e traz à luz a sombra da morte. | 22 He reveals the depths of the darkness, and he brings the shadow of death into the light. |
| 23 Ele torna grandes as nações e as destrói, multiplica os povos e depois os suprime. | 23 He multiplies peoples, and destroys them, and, having been overthrown, he restores them anew. |
| 24 Ele tira a razão dos chefes da terra, e os deixa perdidos no deserto sem pista. | 24 He transforms the heart of the leaders of the people on earth, and misleads those who in vain advance upon the inviolable. |
| 25 Andam às apalpadelas nas trevas, privados da luz, tropeçando como um ébrio. | 25 They will grope as in the darkness, not the light, and he will make them stagger like drunkards. |
