1 Mon fils, retiens mes paroles, garde précieusement mes conseils.	1 My child, keep my words, and treasure my precepts,
2 Observe mes commandements et tu vivras, garde mon enseignement comme la prunelle de tes yeux.	2 keep my precepts and you wil live, keep my teaching as the apple of your eye.
3 Serre-les fermement entre tes doigts, inscris-les sur les tablettes de ton cœur!	3 Bind these to your fingers, write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Dis à la sagesse: “Sois ma sœur”, et à l’intelligence: “Sois mon amie”.	4 Say to Wisdom, 'You are my sister!' Cal Understanding your relation,
5 Alors tu sauras te garder de la femme d’un autre, de la belle inconnue aux douces paroles.	5 to save yourself from the woman that belongs to another, from the stranger, with her seductive words.
6 De la fenêtre de ma maison je regardais à travers le grillage,	6 While I was at the window of my house, I was looking out through the lattice

13 Elle se jette sur ce jeune homme et l’embrasse; elle lui dit d’un ton assuré:	13 She catches hold of him, she kisses him, the bold-faced creature says to him,

18 Viens, prenons notre plaisir, enivrons-nous d’amour jusqu’au matin!	18 Come on, we'l make love as much as we like, till morning. Let us enjoy the delights of love!
19 Mon mari n’est pas à la maison, il est en voyage loin d’ici;	19 For my husband is not at home, he has gone on a very long journey,
20 il a pris l’argent avec lui et ne reviendra à la maison qu’à la pleine lune.”	20 taking his moneybags with him; he wil not be back til the moon is ful .'
21 À force d’habileté elle réussit à le convaincre, elle le séduit et l’entraîne.	21 With her persistent coaxing she overcomes him, lures him on with her wheedling patter.
22 Il la suit aussitôt, comme un bœuf qu’on mène à l’abattoir, comme un cerf pris au nœud coulant,	22 Forthwith he fol ows her, like an ox on its way to the slaughterhouse, like a madman on his way to thestocks,
23 à qui bientôt une flèche percera le foie. Il est comme l’oiseau qui se jette dans le filet, sans savoir qu’il y va de sa vie!	23 until an arrow pierces him to the liver, like the bird that dashes into the net without realising that its lifeis at stake.
24 Donc vous, mes fils, écoutez-moi; retenez bien cette consigne:	24 And now, son, listen to me, pay attention to the words I have to say:
25 ne te laisse pas séduire par une de ces femmes, ne te laisse pas égarer par ses manœuvres.	25 do not let your heart stray into her ways, or wander into her paths;
26 Car elle a déjà fait beaucoup de victimes, et les plus forts y sont tombés.	26 she has done so many to death, and the strongest have al been her victims.
27 De sa maison on passe chez les morts, c’est un chemin qui s’enfonce vers le monde des morts.	27 Her house is the way to Sheol, the descent to the courts of death.
