VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Paulus Apostolus Jesu Christi secundum imperium Dei Salvatoris nostri, et Christi Jesu spei nostræ,1 Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus appointed by the command of God our Saviour and of Christ Jesus ourhope,
Timotheo dilecto filio in fide. Gratia, misericordia, et pax a Deo Patre, et Christo Jesu Domino nostro.
to Timothy, true child of mine in the faith. Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from ChristJesus our Lord.
Sicut rogavi te ut remaneres Ephesi cum irem in Macedoniam, ut denuntiares quibusdam ne aliter docerent,3 When I was setting out for Macedonia I urged you to stay on in Ephesus to instruct certain people not tospread wrong teaching
neque intenderent fabulis, et genealogiis interminatis : quæ quæstiones præstant magis quam ædificationem Dei, quæ est in fide.4 or to give attention to myths and unending genealogies; these things only foster doubts instead offurthering God's plan which is founded on faith.
Finis autem præcepti est caritas de corde puro, et conscientia bona, et fide non ficta.5 The final goal at which this instruction aims is love, issuing from a pure heart, a clear conscience and asincere faith.
A quibus quidam aberrantes, conversi sunt in vaniloquium,6 Some people have missed the way to these things and turned to empty speculation,
volentes esse legis doctores, non intelligentes neque quæ loquuntur, neque de quibus affirmant.7 trying to be teachers of the Law; but they understand neither the words they use nor the matters aboutwhich they make such strong assertions.
Scimus autem quia bona est lex si quis ea legitime utatur :8 We are wel aware that the Law is good, but only provided it is used legitimately,
sciens hoc quia lex justo non est posita, sed injustis, et non subditis, impiis, et peccatoribus, sceleratis, et contaminatis, parricidis, et matricidis, homicidis,9 on the understanding that laws are not framed for people who are upright. On the contrary, they are forcriminals and the insubordinate, for the irreligious and the wicked, for the sacrilegious and the godless; they arefor people who kil their fathers or mothers and for murderers,
fornicariis, masculorum concubitoribus, plagiariis, mendacibus, et perjuris, et si quid aliud sanæ doctrinæ adversatur,10 for the promiscuous, homosexuals, kidnappers, for liars and for perjurers -- and for everything else thatis contrary to the sound teaching
quæ est secundum Evangelium gloriæ beati Dei, quod creditum est mihi.
that accords with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, the gospel that was entrusted to me.
Gratias ago ei, qui me confortavit, Christo Jesu Domino nostro, quia fidelem me existimavit, ponens in ministerio :12 I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength. By cal ing me into his service he has judgedme trustworthy,
qui prius blasphemus fui, et persecutor, et contumeliosus : sed misericordiam Dei consecutus sum, quia ignorans feci in incredulitate.13 even though I used to be a blasphemer and a persecutor and contemptuous. Mercy, however, wasshown me, because while I lacked faith I acted in ignorance;
Superabundavit autem gratia Domini nostri cum fide, et dilectione, quæ est in Christo Jesu.14 but the grace of our Lord filled me with faith and with the love that is in Christ Jesus.
Fidelis sermo, et omni acceptione dignus : quod Christus Jesus venit in hunc mundum peccatores salvos facere, quorum primus ego sum.15 Here is a saying that you can rely on and nobody should doubt: that Christ Jesus came into the worldto save sinners. I myself am the greatest of them;
Sed ideo misericordiam consecutus sum : ut in me primo ostenderet Christus Jesus omnem patientiam ad informationem eorum, qui credituri sunt illi, in vitam æternam.16 and if mercy has been shown to me, it is because Jesus Christ meant to make me the leading exampleof his inexhaustible patience for al the other people who were later to trust in him for eternal life.
Regi autem sæculorum immortali, invisibili, soli Deo honor et gloria in sæcula sæculorum. Amen.
To the eternal King, the undying, invisible and only God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Hoc præceptum commendo tibi, fili Timothee, secundum præcedentes in te prophetias, ut milites in illis bonam militiam,18 Timothy, my son, these are the instructions that I am giving you, in accordance with the words oncespoken over you by the prophets, so that in their light you may fight like a good soldier
habens fidem, et bonam conscientiam, quam quidam repellentes, circa fidem naufragaverunt :19 with faith and a good conscience for your weapons. Some people have put conscience aside andwrecked their faith in consequence.
ex quibus est Hymenæus, et Alexander : quos tradidi Satanæ, ut discant non blasphemare.20 I mean men like Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan so that they may learnnot to be blasphemous.
