Deuteronomium 8

VULGATA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Omne mandatum, quod ego præcipio tibi hodie, cave diligenter ut facias, ut possitis vivere, et multiplicemini, ingressique possideatis terram, pro qua juravit Dominus patribus vestris.	1 'You must keep and put into practice al the commandments which I enjoin on you today, so that youmay survive and increase in numbers and enter the country which Yahweh promised on oath to your ancestors,and make it your own.
2 Et recordaberis cuncti itineris, per quod adduxit te Dominus Deus tuus quadraginta annis per desertum, ut affligeret te, atque tentaret, et nota fierent quæ in tuo animo versabantur, utrum custodires mandata illius, an non.	2 Remember the long road by which Yahweh your God led you for forty years in the desert, to humbleyou, to test you and know your inmost heart -- whether you would keep his commandments or not.
3 Afflixit te penuria, et dedit tibi cibum manna, quod ignorabas tu et patres tui : ut ostenderet tibi quod non in solo pane vivat homo, sed in omni verbo quod egreditur de ore Dei.	3 He humbled you, he made you feel hunger, he fed you with manna which neither you nor yourancestors had ever known, to make you understand that human beings live not on bread alone but on everyword that comes from the mouth of Yahweh.
4 Vestimentum tuum, quo operiebaris, nequaquam vetustate defecit, et pes tuus non est subtritus, en quadragesimus annus est :	4 The clothes on your back did not wear out and your feet were not swol en, all those forty years.
5 ut recogites in corde tuo, quia sicut erudit filium suum homo, sic Dominus Deus tuus erudivit te,	5 'Learn from this that Yahweh your God was training you as a man trains his child,
6 ut custodias mandata Domini Dei tui, et ambules in viis ejus, et timeas eum.	6 and keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, and so follow his ways and fear him.
7 Dominus enim Deus tuus introducet te in terram bonam, terram rivorum, aquarumque et fontium, in cujus campis et montibus erumpunt fluviorum abyssi :	7 'But Yahweh your God is bringing you into a fine country, a land of streams and springs, of waters thatwel up from the deep in val eys and hil s,
8 terram frumenti, hordei ac vinearum, in qua ficus, et malogranata, et oliveta nascuntur : terram olei ac mellis,	8 a land of wheat and barley, of vines, of figs, of pomegranates, a land of olives, of oil, of honey,
9 ubi absque ulla penuria comedes panem tuum, et rerum omnium abundantia perfrueris : cujus lapides ferrum sunt, et de montibus ejus æris metalla fodiuntur :	9 a land where you will eat bread without stint, where you wil want nothing, a land where the stones areiron and where the hil s may be quarried for copper.
10 ut cum comederis, et satiatus fueris, benedicas Domino Deo tuo pro terra optima, quam dedit tibi.	10 You wil eat and have al you want and you wil bless Yahweh your God in the fine country which hehas given you.
11 Observa, et cave nequando obliviscaris Domini Dei tui, et negligas mandata ejus atque judicia et cæremonias, quas ego præcipio tibi hodie :	11 'Be careful not to forget Yahweh your God, by neglecting his commandments, customs and lawswhich I am laying down for you today.
12 ne postquam comederis et satiatus fueris, domos pulchras ædificaveris, et habitaveris in eis,	12 When you have eaten al you want, when you have built fine houses to live in,
13 habuerisque armenta boum, et ovium greges, argenti et auri, cunctarumque rerum copiam,	13 when you have seen your flocks and herds increase, your silver and gold abound and all yourpossessions grow great,
14 elevetur cor tuum, et non reminiscaris Domini Dei tui, qui eduxit te de terra Ægypti, de domo servitutis,	14 do not become proud of heart. Do not then forget Yahweh your God who brought you out of Egypt, outof the place of slave-labour,
15 et ductor tuus fuit in solitudine magna atque terribili, in qua erat serpens flatu adurens, et scorpio, ac dipsas, et nullæ omnino aquæ : qui eduxit rivos de petra durissima,	15 who guided you through this vast and dreadful desert, a land of fiery snakes, scorpions, thirst;
16 et cibavit te manna in solitudine, quod nescierunt patres tui. Et postquam afflixit ac probavit, ad extremum misertus est tui,	16 who in this waterless place brought you water out of the flinty rock; who in this desert fed you withmanna unknown to your ancestors, to humble you and test you and so make your future the happier.
17 ne diceres in corde tuo : Fortitudo mea, et robur manus meæ, hæc mihi omnia præstiterunt :	17 'Beware of thinking to yourself, "My own strength and the might of my own hand have given me thepower to act like this."
18 sed recorderis Domini Dei tui, quod ipse vires tibi præbuerit, ut impleret pactum suum, super quo juravit patribus tuis, sicut præsens indicat dies.	18 Remember Yahweh your God; he was the one who gave you the strength to act effectively like this,thus keeping then, as today, the covenant which he swore to your ancestors.
19 Sin autem oblitus Domini Dei tui, secutus fueris deos alienos, coluerisque illos et adoraveris : ecce nunc prædico tibi quod omnino dispereas.	19 Be sure: if you forget Yahweh your God, if you fol ow other gods, if you serve them and bow down tothem -- I testify to you today -- you wil perish.
20 Sicut gentes, quas delevit Dominus in introitu tuo, ita et vos peribitis, si inobedientes fueritis voci Domini Dei vestri.	20 Like the nations Yahweh is to destroy before you, so you yourselves will perish, for not having listenedto the voice of Yahweh your God.'
