VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
In the fifteenth year of Tiberius Caesar's reign, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, Herodtetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of the territories of Ituraea and Trachonitis, Lysanias tetrarch ofAbilene,
sub principibus sacerdotum Anna et Caipha : factum est verbum Domini super Joannem, Zachariæ filium, in deserto.2 and while the high-priesthood was held by Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John the sonof Zechariah, in the desert.
Et venit in omnem regionem Jordanis, prædicans baptismum pœnitentiæ in remissionem peccatorum,3 He went through the whole Jordan area proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,
sicut scriptum est in libro sermonum Isaiæ prophetæ : Vox clamantis in deserto :
Parate viam Domini ; rectas facite semitas ejus :
as it is written in the book of the sayings of Isaiah the prophet: A voice of one that cries in the desert:Prepare a way for the Lord, make his paths straight!
omnis vallis implebitur,
et omnis mons, et collis humiliabitur :
et erunt prava in directa, et aspera in vias planas :
Let every val ey be fil ed in, every mountain and hil be level ed, winding ways be straightened andrough roads made smooth,
et videbit omnis caro salutare Dei.6 and al humanity wil see the salvation of God.
Dicebat ergo ad turbas quæ exibant ut baptizarentur ab ipso : Genimina viperarum, quis ostendit vobis fugere a ventura ira ?7 He said, therefore, to the crowds who came to be baptised by him, 'Brood of vipers, who warned you toflee from the coming retribution?
Dico enim vobis quia potens est Deus de lapidibus istis suscitare filios Abrahæ.8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance, and do not start telling yourselves, "We have Abraham as ourfather," because, I tel you, God can raise children for Abraham from these stones.
Omnis ergo arbor non faciens fructum bonum, excidetur, et in ignem mittetur.9 Yes, even now the axe is being laid to the root of the trees, so that any tree failing to produce good fruitwil be cut down and thrown on the fire.'
Et interrogabant eum turbæ, dicentes : Quid ergo faciemus ?10 When al the people asked him, 'What must we do, then?'
Respondens autem dicebat illis : Qui habet duas tunicas, det non habenti : et qui habet escas, similiter faciat.11 he answered, 'Anyone who has two tunics must share with the one who has none, and anyone withsomething to eat must do the same.'
Venerunt autem et publicani ut baptizarentur, et dixerunt ad illum : Magister, quid faciemus ?12 There were tax collectors, too, who came for baptism, and these said to him, 'Master, what must wedo?'
He said to them, 'Exact no more than the appointed rate.'
Et ait illis : Neminem concutiatis, neque calumniam faciatis : et contenti estote stipendiis vestris.14 Some soldiers asked him in their turn, 'What about us? What must we do?' He said to them, 'Nointimidation! No extortion! Be content with your pay!'
Existimante autem populo, et cogitantibus omnibus in cordibus suis de Joanne, ne forte ipse esset Christus,15 A feeling of expectancy had grown among the people, who were beginning to wonder whether Johnmight be the Christ,
respondit Joannes, dicens omnibus : Ego quidem aqua baptizo vos : veniet autem fortior me, cujus non sum dignus solvere corrigiam calceamentorum ejus : ipse vos baptizabit in Spiritu Sancto et igni :16 so John declared before them al , 'I baptise you with water, but someone is coming, who is morepowerful than me, and I am not fit to undo the strap of his sandals; he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit andfire.
cujus ventilabrum in manu ejus, et purgabit aream suam, et congregabit triticum in horreum suum, paleas autem comburet igni inextinguibili.17 His winnowing-fan is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn; butthe chaff he wil burn in a fire that will never go out.'
Multa quidem et alia exhortans evangelizabat populo.
And he proclaimed the good news to the people with many other exhortations too.
Herodes autem tetrarcha cum corriperetur ab illo de Herodiade uxore fratris sui, et de omnibus malis quæ fecit Herodes,19 But Herod the tetrarch, censured by John for his relations with his brother's wife Herodias and for allthe other crimes he had committed,
added a further crime to al the rest by shutting John up in prison.
Factum est autem cum baptizaretur omnis populus, et Jesu baptizato, et orante, apertum est cælum :21 Now it happened that when al the people had been baptised and while Jesus after his own baptismwas at prayer, heaven opened
et descendit Spiritus Sanctus corporali specie sicut columba in ipsum : et vox de cælo facta est : Tu es filius meus dilectus, in te complacui mihi.22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical form, like a dove. And a voice came from heaven,'You are my Son; today have I fathered you.'
