VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Et post dies sex assumit Jesus Petrum, et Jacobum, et Joannem, et ducit illos in montem excelsum seorsum solos, et transfiguratus est coram ipsis.1 And he said to them, 'In truth I tel you, there are some standing here who wil not taste death beforethey see the kingdom of God come with power.'
Et vestimenta ejus facta sunt splendentia, et candida nimis velut nix, qualia fullo non potest super terram candida facere.2 Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and John and led them up a high mountain ontheir own by themselves. There in their presence he was transfigured:
Et apparuit illis Elias cum Moyse : et erant loquentes cum Jesu.3 his clothes became brilliantly white, whiter than any earthly bleacher could make them.
Et respondens Petrus, ait Jesu : Rabbi, bonum est nos hic esse : et faciamus tria tabernacula, tibi unum, et Moysi unum, et Eliæ unum.4 Elijah appeared to them with Moses; and they were talking to Jesus.
Non enim sciebat quid diceret : erant enim timore exterriti.5 Then Peter spoke to Jesus, 'Rabbi,' he said, 'it is wonderful for us to be here; so let us make threeshelters, one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.'
Et facta est nubes obumbrans eos : et venit vox de nube, dicens : Hic est Filius meus carissimus : audite illum.6 He did not know what to say; they were so frightened.
Et statim circumspicientes, neminem amplius viderunt, nisi Jesum tantum secum.7 And a cloud came, covering them in shadow; and from the cloud there came a voice, 'This is my Son,the Beloved. Listen to him.'
Et descendentibus illis de monte, præcepit illis ne cuiquam quæ vidissent, narrarent : nisi cum Filius hominis a mortuis resurrexerit.8 Then suddenly, when they looked round, they saw no one with them any more but only Jesus.
Et verbum continuerunt apud se : conquirentes quid esset, cum a mortuis resurrexerit.9 As they were coming down from the mountain he warned them to tel no one what they had seen, untilafter the Son of man had risen from the dead.
Et interrogabant eum, dicentes : Quid ergo dicunt pharisæi et scribæ, quia Eliam oportet venire primum ?10 They observed the warning faithful y, though among themselves they discussed what 'rising from thedead' could mean.
Qui respondens, ait illis : Elias cum venerit primo, restituet omnia : et quomodo scriptum est in Filium hominis, ut multa patiatur et contemnatur.11 And they put this question to him, 'Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?'
Sed dico vobis quia et Elias venit (et fecerunt illi quæcumque voluerunt) sicut scriptum est de eo.
He said to them, 'Elijah is indeed first coming to set everything right again; yet how is it that thescriptures say about the Son of man that he must suffer grievously and be treated with contempt?
Et veniens ad discipulos suos, vidit turbam magnam circa eos, et scribas conquirentes cum illis.13 But I tel you that Elijah has come and they have treated him as they pleased, just as the scripturessay about him.'
Et confestim omnis populus videns Jesum, stupefactus est, et expaverunt, et accurrentes salutabant eum.14 As they were rejoining the disciples they saw a large crowd round them and some scribes arguing withthem.
Et interrogavit eos : Quid inter vos conquiritis ?15 At once, when they saw him, the whole crowd were struck with amazement and ran to greet him.
Et respondens unus de turba, dixit : Magister, attuli filium meum ad te habentem spiritum mutum :16 And he asked them, 'What are you arguing about with them?'
qui ubicumque eum apprehenderit, allidit illum, et spumat, et stridet dentibus, et arescit : et dixi discipulis tuis ut ejicerent illum, et non potuerunt.17 A man answered him from the crowd, 'Master, I have brought my son to you; there is a spirit ofdumbness in him,
Qui respondens eis, dixit : O generatio incredula, quamdiu apud vos ero ? quamdiu vos patiar ? afferte illum ad me.18 and when it takes hold of him it throws him to the ground, and he foams at the mouth and grinds histeeth and goes rigid. And I asked your disciples to drive it out and they were unable to.'
Et attulerunt eum. Et cum vidisset eum, statim spiritus conturbavit illum : et elisus in terram, volutabatur spumans.19 In reply he said to them, 'Faithless generation, how much longer must I be among you? How muchlonger must I put up with you? Bring him to me.'
Et interrogavit patrem ejus : Quantum temporis est ex quo ei hoc accidit ? At ille ait : Ab infantia :20 They brought the boy to him, and at once the spirit of dumbness threw the boy into convulsions, andhe fel to the ground and lay writhing there, foaming at the mouth.
et frequenter eum in ignem, et in aquas misit ut eum perderet : sed si quid potes, adjuva nos, misertus nostri.21 Jesus asked the father, 'How long has this been happening to him?' 'From childhood,' he said,
Jesus autem ait illi : Si potes credere, omnia possibilia sunt credenti.22 'and it has often thrown him into fire and into water, in order to destroy him.
Et continuo exclamans pater pueri, cum lacrimis aiebat : Credo, Domine ; adjuva incredulitatem meam.23 But if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us.'
Et cum videret Jesus concurrentem turbam, comminatus est spiritui immundo, dicens illi : Surde et mute spiritus, ego præcipio tibi, exi ab eo : et amplius ne introëas in eum.24 'If you can?' retorted Jesus. 'Everything is possible for one who has faith.' At once the father of the boycried out, 'I have faith. Help my lack of faith!'
Et exclamans, et multum discerpens eum, exiit ab eo, et factus est sicut mortuus, ita ut multi dicerent : Quia mortuus est.25 And when Jesus saw that a crowd was gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit. 'Deaf and dumbspirit,' he said, 'I command you: come out of him and never enter him again.'
Jesus autem tenens manum ejus elevavit eum, et surrexit.26 Then it threw the boy into violent convulsions and came out shouting, and the boy lay there so like acorpse that most of them said, 'He is dead.'
Et cum introisset in domum, discipuli ejus secreto interrogabant eum : Quare nos non potuimus ejicere eum ?27 But Jesus took him by the hand and helped him up, and he was able to stand.
Et dixit illis : Hoc genus in nullo potest exire, nisi in oratione et jejunio.28 When he had gone indoors, his disciples asked him when they were by themselves, 'Why were weunable to drive it out?'
Et inde profecti prætergrediebantur Galilæam : nec volebat quemquam scire.
He answered, 'This is the kind that can be driven out only by prayer.'
Docebat autem discipulos suos, et dicebat illis : Quoniam Filius hominis tradetur in manus hominum, et occident eum, et occisus tertia die resurget.30 After leaving that place they made their way through Galilee; and he did not want anyone to know,
At illi ignorabant verbum : et timebant interrogare eum.
because he was instructing his disciples; he was telling them, 'The Son of man wil be delivered intothe power of men; they will put him to death; and three days after he has been put to death he will rise again.'
Et venerunt Capharnaum. Qui cum domi essent, interrogabat eos : Quid in via tractabatis ?32 But they did not understand what he said and were afraid to ask him.
At illi tacebant : siquidem in via inter se disputaverunt : quis eorum major esset.33 They came to Capernaum, and when he got into the house he asked them, 'What were you arguingabout on the road?'
Et residens vocavit duodecim, et ait illis : Si quis vult primus esse, erit omnium novissimus, et omnium minister.34 They said nothing, because on the road they had been arguing which of them was the greatest.
Et accipiens puerum, statuit eum in medio eorum : quem cum complexus esset, ait illis :35 So he sat down, called the Twelve to him and said, 'If anyone wants to be first, he must make himselflast of all and servant of all.'
Quisquis unum ex hujusmodi pueris receperit in nomine meo, me recipit : et quicumque me susceperit, non me suscipit, sed eum qui misit me.
He then took a little child whom he set among them and embraced, and he said to them,
Respondit illi Joannes, dicens : Magister, vidimus quemdam in nomine tuo ejicientem dæmonia, qui non sequitur nos, et prohibuimus eum.37 'Anyone who welcomes a little child such as this in my name, welcomes me; and anyone whowelcomes me, welcomes not me but the one who sent me.'
Jesus autem ait : Nolite prohibere eum : nemo est enim qui faciat virtutem in nomine meo, et possit cito male loqui de me :38 John said to him, 'Master, we saw someone who is not one of us driving out devils in your name, andbecause he was not one of us we tried to stop him.'
qui enim non est adversum vos, pro vobis est.39 But Jesus said, 'You must not stop him; no one who works a miracle in my name could soonafterwards speak evil of me.
Quisquis enim potum dederit vobis calicem aquæ in nomine meo, quia Christi estis : amen dico vobis, non perdet mercedem suam.
Anyone who is not against us is for us.
Et quisquis scandalizaverit unum ex his pusillis credentibus in me : bonum est ei magis si circumdaretur mola asinaria collo ejus, et in mare mitteretur.41 'If anyone gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, then in truth I tel you, he wilmost certainly not lose his reward.
Et si scandalizaverit te manus tua, abscide illam : bonum est tibi debilem introire in vitam, quam duas manus habentem ire in gehennam, in ignem inextinguibilem,42 'But anyone who is the downfal of one of these little ones who have faith, would be better thrown intothe sea with a great mil stone hung round his neck.
ubi vermis eorum non moritur, et ignis non extinguitur.43 And if your hand should be your downfal , cut it off; it is better for you to enter into life crippled, than tohave two hands and go to hel , into the fire thatnever be put out.
Et si pes tuus te scandalizat, amputa illum : bonum est tibi claudum introire in vitam æternam, quam duos pedes habentem mitti in gehennam ignis inextinguibilis,44
ubi vermis eorum non moritur, et ignis non extinguitur.45 And if your foot should be your downfal , cut it off; it is better for you enter into life lame, than to havetwo feet and be thrown into hell.
Quod si oculus tuus scandalizat te, ejice eum : bonum est tibi luscum introire in regnum Dei, quam duos oculos habentem mitti in gehennam ignis,46
ubi vermis eorum non moritur, et ignis non extinguitur.47 And if your eye should be your downfal , tear it out; it is better for you to enter into the kingdom of Godwith one eye, than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell
Omnis enim igne salietur, et omnis victima sale salietur.48 where their worm will never die nor their fire be put out.
Bonum est sal : quod si sal insulsum fuerit, in quo illud condietis ? Habete in vobis sal, et pacem habete inter vos.49 For everyone wil be salted with fire.
Salt is a good thing, but if salt has become insipid, how can you make it salty again? Have salt inyourselves and be at peace with one another.'
