VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Philisthiim autem pugnabant contra Israël, fugeruntque viri Israël Palæsthinos, et ceciderunt vulnerati in monte Gelboë.1 The Philistines gave battle to Israel and the Israelites, fleeing from the Philistines, fel and wereslaughtered on Mount Gilboa.
Cumque appropinquassent Philisthæi, persequentes Saul et filios ejus, percusserunt Jonathan, et Abinadab, et Melchisua filios Saul.2 The Philistines bore down on Saul and his sons, and they kil ed Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchishua,Saul's sons.
Et aggravatum est prælium contra Saul, inveneruntque eum sagittarii, et vulneraverunt jaculis.3 The fighting grew fiercer round Saul; the archers came upon him, and he was wounded by thearchers.
Et dixit Saul ad armigerum suum : Evagina gladium tuum, et interfice me, ne forte veniant incircumcisi isti, et illudant mihi. Noluit autem armiger ejus hoc facere, timore perterritus : arripuit ergo Saul ensem, et irruit in eum.4 Saul then said to his armour-bearer, 'Draw your sword and run me through with it. I do not want theseuncircumcised men to come and make fun of me.' But his armour-bearer was very much afraid and would not doit. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.
Quod cum vidisset armiger ejus, videlicet mortuum esse Saul, irruit etiam ipse in gladium suum, et mortuus est.5 His armour-bearer, seeing that Saul was dead, fel on his sword too and died with him.
Interiit ergo Saul : et tres filii ejus, et omnis domus illius pariter concidit.6 Thus died Saul, his three sons and his entire household together.
When al the Israelites who were in the val ey saw that the Israelites had been routed and that Sauland his sons were dead, they abandoned their towns and fled. The Philistines then came and occupied them.
Die igitur altero detrahentes Philisthiim spolia cæsorum, invenerunt Saul et filios ejus jacentes in monte Gelboë.8 When the Philistines came on the fol owing day to strip the dead, they found Saul and his sons lyingon Mount Gilboa.
Cumque spoliassent eum, et amputassent caput, armisque nudassent, miserunt in terram suam, ut circumferretur, et ostenderetur idolorum templis, et populis :9 They stripped him and, taking his head and his armour, had these carried round the territory of thePhilistines to proclaim the good news to their idols and their people.
arma autem ejus consecraverunt in fano dei sui, et caput affixerunt in templo Dagon.10 They placed his armour in the temple of their gods and nailed his head up in the temple of Dagon.
Hoc cum audissent viri Jabes Galaad, omnia scilicet quæ Philisthiim fecerant super Saul,11 When al the inhabitants of Jabesh in Gilead heard everything that the Philistines had done to Saul,
consurrexerunt singuli virorum fortium, et tulerunt cadavera Saul et filiorum ejus : attuleruntque ea in Jabes, et sepelierunt ossa eorum subter quercum, quæ erat in Jabes, et jejunaverunt septem diebus.12 the warriors al set out and took the bodies of Saul and his sons away; they brought them to Jabeshand buried their bones under the tamarisk of Jabesh and fasted for seven days.
Mortuus est ergo Saul propter iniquitates suas, eo quod prævaricatus sit mandatum Domini quod præceperat, et non custodierit illud : sed insuper etiam pythonissam consuluerit,13 Thus died Saul in the infidelity of which he had been guilty towards Yahweh, in that he had notobeyed the word of Yahweh and because he had consulted a necromancer for guidance.
nec speraverit in Domino : propter quod interfecit eum, et transtulit regnum ejus ad David filium Isai.14 He had not consulted Yahweh, who therefore caused his death and transferred the monarchy toDavid son of Jesse.
