VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Et venerunt universæ tribus Israël ad David in Hebron, dicentes : Ecce nos os tuum et caro tua sumus.1 Al the tribes of Israel then came to David at Hebron and said, 'Look, we are your own flesh and bone.
Sed et heri et nudiustertius cum esset Saul rex super nos, tu eras educens et reducens Israël : dixit autem Dominus ad te : Tu pasces populum meum Israël, et tu eris dux super Israël.2 In days past when Saul was our king, it was you who led Israel on its campaigns, and to you it was thatYahweh promised, "You are to shepherd my people Israel and be leader of Israel." '
Venerunt quoque et seniores Israël ad regem in Hebron, et percussit cum eis rex David fœdus in Hebron coram Domino : unxeruntque David in regem super Israël.3 So al the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a pact with them inYahweh's presence at Hebron, and they anointed David as king of Israel.
Filius triginta annorum erat David cum regnare cœpisset, et quadraginta annis regnavit.4 David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned for forty years.
In Hebron regnavit super Judam septem annis et sex mensibus : in Jerusalem autem regnavit triginta tribus annis super omnem Israël et Judam.
In Hebron he reigned over Judah for seven years and six months; then he reigned in Jerusalem over allIsrael and Judah for thirty-three years.
Et abiit rex, et omnes viri qui erant cum eo, in Jerusalem, ad Jebusæum habitatorem terræ : dictumque est David ab eis : Non ingredieris huc, nisi abstuleris cæcos et claudos dicentes : Non ingredietur David huc.6 The king and his men then marched on Jerusalem, on the Jebusites living in the territory. These said toDavid, 'You wil not get in here. The blind and the lame wil hold you off.' (That is to say: David will never get inhere.)
Cepit autem David arcem Sion : hæc est civitas David.7 But David captured the citadel of Zion, that is, the City of David.
Proposuerat enim David in die illa præmium, qui percussisset Jebusæum, et tetigisset domatum fistulas, et abstulisset cæcos et claudos odientes animam David. Idcirco dicitur in proverbio : Cæcus et claudus non intrabunt in templum.8 That day, David said, 'Whoever gets up the tunnel and kil s a Jebusite . . .' As for the blind and thelame, David hated them with his whole being. (Hence the saying: the blind and the lame may not enter theTemple.)
Habitavit autem David in arce, et vocavit eam civitatem David : et ædificavit per gyrum a Mello et intrinsecus.9 David went to live in the citadel and cal ed it the City of David. David then built a wal round it, from theMil o inwards.
Et ingrediebatur proficiens atque succrescens, et Dominus Deus exercituum erat cum eo.10 David grew stronger and stronger, and Yahweh, God of Sabaoth, was with him.
Misit quoque Hiram rex Tyri nuntios ad David, et ligna cedrina, et artifices lignorum, artificesque lapidum ad parietes : et ædificaverunt domum David.11 Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, with cedar wood, carpenters and stone-cutters, who builtDavid a palace.
Et cognovit David quoniam confirmasset eum Dominus regem super Israël, et quoniam exaltasset regnum ejus super populum suum Israël.12 David then knew that Yahweh had confirmed him as king of Israel and, for the sake of his peopleIsrael, had extended his sovereignty.
Accepit ergo David adhuc concubinas et uxores de Jerusalem, postquam venerat de Hebron : natique sunt David et alii filii et filiæ :13 After coming from Hebron, David took other concubines and wives in Jerusalem, and sons anddaughters were born to him.
et hæc nomina eorum, qui nati sunt ei in Jerusalem : Samua, et Sobab, et Nathan, et Salomon,14 These are the names of those born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon,
et Jebahar, et Elisua, et Nepheg,15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia,
et Japhia, et Elisama, et Elioda, et Eliphaleth.
Elishama, Eliada, Eliphelet.
Audierunt ergo Philisthiim quod unxissent David in regem super Israël, et ascenderunt universi ut quærerent David : quod cum audisset David, descendit in præsidium.17 When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed as king of Israel, they all went up to seekhim out. On hearing this, David went down to the stronghold.
Philisthiim autem venientes diffusi sunt in valle Raphaim.18 When the Philistines arrived, they deployed in the Val ey of the Rephaim.
Et consuluit David Dominum, dicens : Si ascendam ad Philisthiim ? et si dabis eos in manu mea ? Et dixit Dominus ad David : Ascende, quia tradens dabo Philisthiim in manu tua.19 David consulted Yahweh and asked, 'Shal I attack the Philistines? Wil you deliver them into mypower?' Yahweh replied to David, 'Attack! I shal certainly deliver the Philistines into your power.'
Venit ergo David in Baal Pharasim : et percussit eos ibi, et dixit : Divisit Dominus inimicos meos coram me, sicut dividuntur aquæ. Propterea vocatum est nomen loci illius, Baal Pharasim.20 Accordingly, David went to Baal-Perazim and there David defeated them. He said, 'Yahweh has madea breach in my enemies for me, as though they had been breached by a flood.' This is why the place was giventhe name Baal-Perazim.
Et reliquerunt ibi sculptilia sua, quæ tulit David et viri ejus.21 They had left their gods behind them there, and David and his men carried them off.
Et addiderunt adhuc Philisthiim ut ascenderent, et diffusi sunt in valle Raphaim.22 Again the Philistines invaded and deployed in the Valley of the Rephaim.
Consuluit autem David Dominum : Si ascendam contra Philisthæos, et tradas eos in manus meas ? Qui respondit : Non ascendas contra eos, sed gyra post tergum eorum, et venies ad eos ex adverso pyrorum.23 David consulted Yahweh, who replied, 'Do not attack them from the front; go round to their rear andengage them opposite the balsam trees.
Et cum audieris sonitum gradientis in cacumine pyrorum, tunc inibis prælium : quia tunc egredietur Dominus ante faciem tuam, ut percutiat castra Philisthiim.24 When you hear the sound of footsteps in the tops of the balsam trees, advance, for that wil beYahweh going out ahead of you to defeat the Philistine army.'
Fecit itaque David sicut præceperat ei Dominus, et percussit Philisthiim de Gabaa usque dum venias Gezer.25 David did as Yahweh had ordered and beat the Philistines from Gibeon to the Pass of Gezer.
