Genesis 46

VULGATA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Profectusque Israël cum omnibus quæ habebat, venit ad Puteum juramenti : et mactatis ibi victimis Deo patris sui Isaac,	1 So Israel set out with al his possessions. Arriving at Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of hisfather Isaac.
2 audivit eum per visionem noctis vocantem se, et dicentem sibi : Jacob, Jacob. Cui respondit : Ecce adsum.	2 God spoke to Israel in a vision at night, 'Jacob, Jacob,' he said. 'Here I am,' he replied.
3 Ait illi Deus : Ego sum fortissimus Deus patris tui : noli timere, descende in Ægyptum, quia in gentem magnam faciam te ibi.	3 'I am El, God of your father,' he said. 'Do not be afraid of going down to Egypt, for I will make you intoa great nation there.
4 Ego descendam tecum illuc, et ego inde adducam te revertentem : Joseph quoque ponet manus suas super oculos tuos.	4 I shal go down to Egypt with you and I myself shall bring you back again, and Joseph's hand wilclose your eyes.'
5 Surrexit autem Jacob a Puteo juramenti : tuleruntque eum filii cum parvulis et uxoribus suis in plaustris quæ miserat Pharao ad portandum senem,	5 So Jacob left Beersheba. Israel's sons conveyed their father Jacob, their little children and their wivesin the waggons Pharaoh had sent to fetch him.
6 et omnia quæ possederat in terra Chanaan : venitque in Ægyptum cum omni semine suo,	6 Taking their livestock and all that they had acquired in Canaan, they arrived in Egypt -- Jacob and alhis offspring.
7 filii ejus, et nepotes, filiæ, et cuncta simul progenies.	7 With him to Egypt, he brought his sons and grandsons, his daughters and granddaughters -- al hisoffspring.
8 Hæc sunt autem nomina filiorum Israël, qui ingressi sunt in Ægyptum, ipse cum liberis suis. Primogenitus Ruben.	8 These were the names of the Israelites, Jacob and his descendants, who arrived in Egypt: Reuben,Jacob's first-born,
9 Filii Ruben : Henoch et Phallu et Hesron et Charmi.	9 and the sons of Reuben: Hanoch, Pal u, Hezron and Carmi.
10 Filii Simeon : Jamuel et Jamin et Ahod, et Jachin et Sohar, et Saul filius Chanaanitidis.	10 The sons of Simeon: Jemuel, Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul the son of the Canaanitewoman.
11 Filii Levi : Gerson et Caath et Merari.	11 The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath and Merari.
12 Filii Juda : Her et Onan et Sela et Phares et Zara ; mortui sunt autem Her et Onan in terra Chanaan. Natique sunt filii Phares : Hesron et Hamul.	12 The sons of Judah: Er, Onan, Shelah, Perez, and Zerah (Er and Onan had died in Canaan), andHezron and Hamul sons of Perez.
13 Filii Issachar : Thola et Phua et Job et Semron.	13 The sons of Issachar: Tola, Puvah, Jashub and Shimron.
14 Filii Zabulon : Sared et Elon et Jahelel.	14 The sons of Zebulun: Sered, Elon and Jahleel.
15 Hi filii Liæ quos genuit in Mesopotamia Syriæ cum Dina filia sua : omnes animæ filiorum ejus et filiarum, triginta tres.	15 These were the sons that Leah had borne to Jacob in Paddan-Aram, besides his daughter Dinah; inal , his sons and daughters numbered thirty-three.
16 Filii Gad : Sephion et Haggi et Suni et Esebon et Heri et Arodi et Areli.	16 The sons of Gad: Ziphion, Haggi, Shuni, Ezbon, Eri, Arodi and Areli.
17 Filii Aser : Jamne et Jesua et Jessui et Beria, Sara quoque soror eorum. Filii Beria : Heber et Melchiel.	17 The sons of Asher: Jimnah, Jishvah, Jishvi, Beriah, with their sister Serah; the sons of Beriah: Heberand Malchiel.
18 Hi filii Zelphæ, quam dedit Laban Liæ filiæ suæ : et hos genuit Jacob sedecim animas.	18 These were the sons of Zilpah whom Laban gave to his daughter Leah; she bore these to Jacob --sixteen persons.
19 Filii Rachel uxoris Jacob : Joseph et Benjamin.	19 The sons of Rachel wife of Jacob: Joseph and Benjamin.
20 Natique sunt Joseph filii in terra Ægypti, quos genuit ei Aseneth filia Putiphare sacerdotis Heliopoleos : Manasses et Ephraim.	20 Born to Joseph in Egypt were: Manasseh and Ephraim sons of Asenath, daughter of Potiphera priestof On.
21 Filii Benjamin : Bela et Bechor et Asbel et Gera et Naaman et Echi et Ros et Mophim et Ophim et Ared.	21 The sons of Benjamin: Bela, Becher, Ashbel, Gera, Naaman, Ehi, Rosh, Muppim, Huppim and Ard.
22 Hi filii Rachel quos genuit Jacob : omnes animæ, quatuordecim.	22 These were the sons that Rachel bore to Jacob -- fourteen persons in al .
23 Filii Dan : Husim.	23 The sons of Dan: Hushim.
24 Filii Nephthali : Jasiel et Guni et Jeser et Sallem.	24 The sons of Naphtali: Jahzeel, Guni, Jezer and Shil em.
25 Hi filii Balæ, quam dedit Laban Racheli filiæ suæ : et hos genuit Jacob : omnes animæ, septem.	25 These were the sons of Bilhah whom Laban gave to his daughter Rachel; she bore these to Jacob --seven persons in all.
26 Cunctæ animæ, quæ ingressæ sunt cum Jacob in Ægyptum, et egressæ sunt de femore illius, absque uxoribus filiorum ejus, sexaginta sex.	26 Altogether, the members of Jacob's family who arrived with him in Egypt -- his own issue, notcounting the wives of Jacob's sons -- numbered sixty-six all told.
27 Filii autem Joseph, qui nati sunt ei in terra Ægypti, animæ duæ. Omnes animæ domus Jacob, quæ ingressæ sunt in Ægyptum, fuere septuaginta.	27 With Joseph's sons born to him in Egypt -- two persons -- the members of Jacob's family who wentto Egypt totalled seventy.
28 Misit autem Judam ante se ad Joseph, ut nuntiaret ei, et occurreret in Gessen.	28 Israel sent Judah ahead to Joseph, so that Judah might present himself to Joseph in Goshen. Whenthey arrived in Goshen,
29 Quo cum pervenisset, juncto Joseph curro suo, ascendit obviam patri suo ad eumdem locum : vidensque eum, irruit super collum ejus, et inter amplexus flevit.	29 Joseph had his chariot made ready and went up to Goshen to meet his father Israel. As soon as heappeared he threw his arms round his neck and for a long time wept on his shoulder.
30 Dixitque pater ad Joseph : Jam lætus moriar, quia vidi faciem tuam, et superstitem te relinquo.	30 Israel said to Joseph, 'Now I can die, now that I have seen you in person and seen you stil alive.'
31 At ille locutus est ad fratres suos, et ad omnem domum patris sui : Ascendam, et nuntiabo Pharaoni, dicamque ei : Fratres mei, et domus patris mei, qui erant in terra Chanaan, venerunt ad me :	31 Then Joseph said to his brothers and his father's family, 'I shall go back and break the news toPharaoh. I shall tel him, "My brothers and my father's family who were in Canaan have come to me.
32 et sunt viri pastores ovium, curamque habent alendorum gregum : pecora sua, et armenta, et omnia quæ habere potuerunt, adduxerunt secum.	32 The men are shepherds and look after livestock, and they have brought their flocks and cattle and altheir possessions."
33 Cumque vocaverit vos, et dixerit : Quod est opus vestrum ?	33 Thus, when Pharaoh summons you and asks, "What is your occupation?",
34 respondebitis : Viri pastores sumus servi tui, ab infantia nostra usque in præsens, et nos et patres nostri. Hæc autem dicetis, ut habitare possitis in terra Gessen : quia detestantur Ægyptii omnes pastores ovium.	34 you are to say, "Ever since our boyhood your servants have looked after livestock, we and ourfathers before us," so that you can stay in the Goshen region -- for the Egyptians have a horror of al shepherds.'
