VULGATANEW JERUSALEM
Interea locutus est Deus ad Jacob : Surge, et ascende Bethel, et habita ibi, facque altare Deo qui apparuit tibi quando fugiebas Esau fratrem tuum.1 God said to Jacob, 'Move on, go to Bethel and settle there. Make an altar there for the God whoappeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau.'
Jacob vero convocata omni domo sua, ait : Abjicite deos alienos qui in medio vestri sunt, et mundamini, ac mutate vestimenta vestra.2 Jacob said to his family and to all who were with him, 'Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you;cleanse yourselves, and change your clothes.
Surgite, et ascendamus in Bethel, ut faciamus ibi altare Deo : qui exaudivit me in die tribulationis meæ, et socius fuit itineris mei.3 We must move on and go to Bethel. There I shall make an altar for the God who heard me when I wasin distress, and gave me his help on the journey I made.'
Dederunt ergo ei omnes deos alienos quos habebant, et inaures quæ erant in auribus eorum : at ille infodit ea subter terebinthum, quæ est post urbem Sichem.4 They gave Jacob al the foreign gods in their possession, and the earrings that they were wearing.Jacob buried them under the oak tree near Shechem.
Cumque profecti essent, terror Dei invasit omnes per circuitum civitates, et non sunt ausi persequi recedentes.5 They broke camp; a divine terror struck the towns round about, and no one pursued the sons ofJacob.
Venit igitur Jacob Luzam, quæ est in terra Chanaan, cognomento Bethel : ipse et omnis populus cum eo.6 When Jacob arrived at Luz in Canaan -- that is, Bethel-and al the people with him,
Ædificavitque ibi altare, et appellavit nomen loci illius, Domus Dei : ibi enim apparuit ei Deus cum fugeret fratrem suum.7 he built an altar there and named the place El-Bethel, since it was there that God had appeared to himwhen he was fleeing from his brother.
Eodem tempore mortua est Debora nutrix Rebeccæ, et sepulta est ad radices Bethel subter quercum : vocatumque est nomen loci illius, Quercus fletus.8 Deborah, who had been Rebekah's nurse, died and was buried below Bethel, under the oak tree; sothey named it the Oak of Tears.
Apparuit autem iterum Deus Jacob postquam reversus est de Mesopotamia Syriæ, benedixitque ei9 God again appeared to Jacob on his return from Paddan-Aram, and blessed him.
dicens : Non vocaberis ultra Jacob, sed Israël erit nomen tuum. Et appellavit eum Israël,10 God said to him, 'Your name is Jacob, but from now on you wil be cal ed not Jacob but Israel.' Thushe came by the name Israel.
dixitque ei : Ego Deus omnipotens : cresce, et multiplicare : gentes et populi nationum ex te erunt, reges de lumbis tuis egredientur,11 God said to him, 'I am El Shaddai. Be fruitful and multiply. A nation, indeed an assembly of nations, wil descend from you, and kings will issue from your loins.
terramque quam dedi Abraham et Isaac, dabo tibi et semini tuo post te.12 The country which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I now give to you; and this country I shal give toyour descendants after you.'
Et recessit ab eo.13 Then God went up from him.
Ille vero erexit titulum lapideum in loco quo locutus fuerat ei Deus : libans super eum libamina, et effundens oleum :14 Jacob raised a monument at the spot where he had spoken to him, a standing-stone, on which hemade a libation and poured oil.
vocansque nomen loci illius Bethel.
Jacob named the place Bethel where God had spoken to him.
Egressus autem inde, venit verno tempore ad terram quæ ducit Ephratam : in qua cum parturiret Rachel,16 They left Bethel, and while they were stil some distance from Ephrath, Rachel went into labour, andher pains were severe.
ob difficultatem partus periclitari c?pit. Dixitque ei obstetrix : Noli timere, quia et hunc habebis filium.17 When her labour was at its hardest, the midwife said to her, 'Do not worry, this is going to be anotherboy.'
Egrediente autem anima præ dolore, et imminente jam morte, vocavit nomen filii sui Benomi, id est, Filius doloris mei : pater vero appellavit eum Benjamin, id est, Filius dextræ.18 At the moment when she breathed her last, for she was dying, she named him Ben-Oni. His father, however, named him Benjamin.
Mortua est ergo Rachel, et sepulta est in via quæ ducit Ephratam, hæc est Bethlehem.19 So Rachel died and was buried on the road to Ephrath, now Bethlehem.
Erexitque Jacob titulum super sepulchrum ejus : hic est titulus monumenti Rachel, usque in præsentem diem.20 Jacob raised a monument on her grave, that same monument of Rachel's Tomb which is theretoday.
Egressus inde, fixit tabernaculum trans Turrem gregis.21 Israel left and pitched his tent beyond Migdal-Eder.
Cumque habitaret in illa regione, abiit Ruben, et dormivit cum Bala concubina patris sui : quod illum minime latuit. Erant autem filii Jacob duodecim.22 While Israel was living in that district, Reuben went and slept with Bilhah his father's concubine, andIsrael found out. The sons of Jacob were now twelve.
Filii Liæ : primogenitus Ruben, et Simeon, et Levi, et Judas, et Issachar, et Zabulon.23 The sons of Leah: Jacob's eldest son Reuben, then Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar and Zebulun.
Filii Rachel : Joseph et Benjamin.24 The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
Filii Balæ ancillæ Rachelis : Dan et Nephthali.25 The sons of Bilhah, Rachel's slave-girl: Dan and Naphtali.
Filii Zelphæ ancillæ Liæ : Gad et Aser : hi sunt filii Jacob, qui nati sunt ei in Mesopotamia Syriæ.
The sons of Zilpah, Leah's slave-girl: Gad and Asher. These were the sons born to Jacob in Paddan-Aram.
Venit etiam ad Isaac patrem suum in Mambre, civitatem Arbee, hæc est Hebron, in qua peregrinatus est Abraham et Isaac.27 Jacob came home to his father Isaac at Mamre, at Kiriath-Arba -- now Hebron -- where Abraham andIsaac had stayed.
Et completi sunt dies Isaac centum octoginta annorum.28 Isaac was one hundred and eighty years old
Consumptusque ætate mortuus est : et appositus est populo suo senex et plenus dierum : et sepelierunt eum Esau et Jacob filii sui.29 when he breathed his last. He died and was gathered to his people, an old man who had enjoyed hisful span of life. His sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
