LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Due giorni dopo doveva celebrarsi la festa di Pasqua e degli Azzimi, e i capi dei sacerdoti e gli scribi cercavano come impadronirsi di lui con inganno e farlo morire.	1 It was two days before the Passover and the feast of Unleavened Bread, and the chief priests and thescribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by some trick and have him put to death.
2 Dicevano infatti: "Non durante la festività, affinché non si verifichi una sommossa del popolo".	2 For they said, 'It must not be during the festivities, or there wil be a disturbance among the people.'
3 Intanto, trovandosi egli a Betània in casa di Simone il lebbroso, mentre sedeva a mensa, giunse una donna recando un vaso di alabastro pieno di unguento di nardo genuino, molto costoso. Ora ella, infranto il vaso, lo versò sul capo di lui.	3 He was at Bethany in the house of Simon, a man who had suffered from a virulent skin-disease; hewas at table when a woman came in with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment, pure nard. She broke the jarand poured the ointment on his head.
4 C'erano alcuni che indignati si dicevano tra loro: "A che scopo è stato fatto questo spreco di unguento?	4 Some who were there said to one another indignantly, 'Why this waste of ointment?
5 Infatti si poteva vendere questo unguento a oltre trecento denari e darli ai poveri". E si misero a rimproverarla.	5 Ointment like this could have been sold for over three hundred denari and the money given to thepoor'; and they were angry with her.
6 Gesù, allora, disse: "Lasciatela stare! Perché le date fastidio? Ha compiuto un'opera buona verso di me.	6 But Jesus said, 'Leave her alone. Why are you upsetting her? What she has done for me is a goodwork.
7 Difatti, i poveri li avete sempre con voi e potete far loro del bene quando volete; ma non sempre avrete me.	7 You have the poor with you always, and you can be kind to them whenever you wish, but you wil notalways have me.
8 Ciò che poteva fare, ella l'ha fatto ungendo il mio corpo in anticipo per la sepoltura.	8 She has done what she could: she has anointed my body beforehand for its burial.
9 In verità vi dico: dovunque sarà predicato il vangelo per tutto il mondo, si narrerà, a sua memoria, anche ciò che ella ha fatto".	9 In truth I tel you, wherever throughout al the world the gospel is proclaimed, what she has done wilbe told as well, in remembrance of her.'
10 Ora Giuda Iscariota, che era uno dei Dodici, si recò dai capi dei sacerdoti per consegnarlo nelle loro mani.	10 Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, approached the chief priests with an offer to hand Jesus over tothem.
11 Essi, all'udir ciò, si rallegrarono e promisero di dargli del denaro. Perciò egli cercava il modo di consegnarglielo al momento più opportuno.	11 They were delighted to hear it, and promised to give him money; and he began to look for a way ofbetraying him when the opportunity should occur.
12 Nel primo giorno degli Azzimi, all'ora in cui s'immolava l'agnello pasquale, i suoi discepoli gli dicono: "Dove vuoi che andiamo a preparare perché tu possa mangiare la Pasqua?".	12 On the first day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover lamb was sacrificed, his disciples said tohim, 'Where do you want us to go and make the preparations for you to eat the Passover?'
13 Egli manda due dei suoi discepoli dicendo loro: "Andate in città. Vi si farà avanti un uomo che trasporta un'anfora d'acqua. Seguitelo	13 So he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 'Go into the city and you will meet a man carrying apitcher of water. Fol ow him,
14 e, dovunque entri, dite al padrone di casa: "Il Maestro manda a dire: Dov'è la mia sala, in cui possa mangiare la Pasqua insieme ai miei discepoli?".	14 and say to the owner of the house which he enters, "The Master says: Where is the room for me toeat the Passover with my disciples?"
15 Egli vi mostrerà una grande stanza al piano superiore, già arredata e pronta. Là preparate per noi".	15 He wil show you a large upper room furnished with couches, al prepared. Make the preparations forus there.'
16 I discepoli andarono e, giunti in città, trovarono com'egli aveva loro detto e prepararono la Pasqua.	16 The disciples set out and went to the city and found everything as he had told them, and preparedthe Passover.
17 Fattasi sera, venne anch'egli con i Dodici.	17 When evening came he arrived with the Twelve.
18 Mentre erano a tavola e mangiavano, Gesù disse: "In verità vi dico che uno di voi, che mangia con me, mi tradirà".	18 And while they were at table eating, Jesus said, 'In truth I tell you, one of you is about to betray me,one of you eating with me.'
19 Allora quelli incominciarono a rattristarsi e a domandargli, uno per uno: "Sono forse io?".	19 They were distressed and said to him, one after another, 'Not me, surely?'
20 Ma egli rispose loro: "E' uno dei Dodici, che intinge con me nel piatto.	20 He said to them, 'It is one of the Twelve, one who is dipping into the same dish with me.
21 Sì, il Figlio dell'uomo se ne va, in conformità a quanto sta scritto di lui. Guai, però, a quell'uomo dal quale il Figlio dell'uomo è tradito! Sarebbe meglio per lui che quell'uomo non fosse mai nato!".	21 Yes, the Son of man is going to his fate, as the scriptures say he will, but alas for that man by whomthe Son of man is betrayed! Better for that man if he had never been born.'
22 Mentre ancora mangiavano, egli prese il pane, lo benedì, lo spezzò e lo diede loro dicendo: "Prendete! Questo è il mio corpo".	22 And as they were eating he took bread, and when he had said the blessing he broke it and gave it tothem. 'Take it,' he said, 'this is my body.'
23 Poi prese un calice, lo benedì, lo diede loro e ne bevvero tutti.	23 Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he handed it to them, and al drank from it,
24 Egli disse loro: "Questo è il mio sangue dell'alleanza, versato per molti.	24 and he said to them, 'This is my blood, the blood of the covenant, poured out for many.
25 In verità vi dico che non berrò più del succo della vite fino al giorno in cui lo berrò nuovo nel regno di Dio".	25 In truth I tel you, I shal never drink wine any more until the day I drink the new wine in the kingdomof God.'
26 Quindi, detto l'inno di lode, uscirono verso il monte degli Ulivi.	26 After the psalms had been sung they left for the Mount of Olives.
27 Allora Gesù disse loro: "Voi tutti vi scandalizzerete, poiché sta scritto: Percuoterò il pastore e le pecore si disperderanno.	27 And Jesus said to them, 'You wil all fal away, for the scripture says: I shal strike the shepherd andthe sheep wil be scattered;
28 Ma dopo che sarò risorto, vi precederò in Galilea".	28 however, after my resurrection I shall go before you into Galilee.'
29 Pietro, però, gli disse: "Anche se tutti si scandalizzeranno, io no!".	29 Peter said, 'Even if all fal away, I wil not.'
30 Gli dice Gesù: "In verità ti dico che oggi, questa notte stessa, prima che il gallo canti due volte, mi rinnegherai tre volte".	30 And Jesus said to him, 'In truth I tel you, this day, this very night, before the cock crows twice, youwil have disowned me three times.'
31 Ma egli continuava a dire con maggior forza: "Anche se dovessi morire con te, non ti rinnegherò". Lo stesso dicevano anche tutti gli altri.	31 But he repeated stil more earnestly, 'If I have to die with you, I wil never disown you.' And they allsaid the same.
32 Frattanto giungono in un podere chiamato Getsèmani. Dice ai suoi discepoli: "Sedetevi qui, intanto che io prego".	32 They came to a plot of land cal ed Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, 'Stay here while I pray.'
33 Quindi, presi con sé Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni, incominciò ad essere preso da terrore e da spavento.	33 Then he took Peter and James and John with him.
34 Perciò disse loro: "L'anima mia è triste fino alla morte. Rimanete qui e vegliate!".	34 And he began to feel terror and anguish. And he said to them, 'My soul is sorrowful to the point ofdeath. Wait here, and stay awake.'
35 Quindi, portatosi un po' più avanti, si gettò a terra e pregava che, se fosse possibile, passasse da lui quell'ora.	35 And going on a little further he threw himself on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, thishour might pass him by.
36 Diceva: "Abbà, Padre! Tutto è possibile a te. Allontana da me questo calice! Tuttavia, non ciò che io voglio, ma quello che tu vuoi".	36 'Abba, Father!' he said, 'For you everything is possible. Take this cup away from me. But let it be asyou, not I, would have it.'
37 Tornato indietro, li trova addormentati. Perciò dice a Pietro: "Simone, dormi? Non hai avuto la forza di vegliare una sola ora?	37 He came back and found them sleeping, and he said to Peter, 'Simon, are you asleep? Had you notthe strength to stay awake one hour?
38 Vegliate e pregate, affinché non entriate in tentazione. Certo, lo spirito è pronto; la carne, però, è debole".	38 Stay awake and pray not to be put to the test. The spirit is wil ing enough, but human nature is weak.'
39 Allontanatosi di nuovo, pregò ripetendo le stesse parole.	39 Again he went away and prayed, saying the same words.
40 Poi di nuovo tornò e li trovò addormentati. I loro occhi, infatti, erano appesantiti e non sapevano che cosa rispondergli.	40 And once more he came back and found them sleeping, their eyes were so heavy; and they couldfind no answer for him.
41 Torna ancora una terza volta e dice loro: "Continuate a dormire e vi riposate? Basta! E' giunta l'ora: ecco che il Figlio dell'uomo è consegnato nelle mani dei peccatori.	41 He came back a third time and said to them, 'You can sleep on now and have your rest. It is al over.The hour has come. Now the Son of man is to be betrayed into the hands of sinners.
42 Alzatevi, andiamo! Ecco: chi mi tradisce è vicino".	42 Get up! Let us go! My betrayer is not far away.'
43 Nello stesso momento, mentre ancora parlava, giunge Giuda, uno dei Dodici, e con lui una grande turba con spade e bastoni, mandata dai capi dei sacerdoti, dagli scribi e dagli anziani.	43 And at once, while he was stil speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, came up and with him a numberof men armed with swords and clubs, sent by the chief priests and the scribes and the elders.
44 Il traditore aveva loro dato un segno: "Colui che bacerò, è lui. Afferratelo e portatelo via con attenzione".	44 Now the traitor had arranged a signal with them saying, 'The one I kiss, he is the man. Arrest him,and see he is well guarded when you lead him away.'
45 Appena giunto, subito gli si avvicinò dicendogli: "Maestro!", e lo baciava ripetutamente.	45 So when the traitor came, he went up to Jesus at once and said, 'Rabbi!' and kissed him.
46 Quelli, allora, gli misero le mani addosso e lo arrestarono.	46 The others seized him and arrested him.
47 Uno dei presenti, sguainata la spada, colpì il servo del sommo sacerdote e gli staccò l'orecchio.	47 Then one of the bystanders drew his sword and struck out at the high priest's servant and cut off hisear.
48 Allora Gesù, prendendo la parola, disse loro: "Come contro un brigante siete venuti ad arrestarmi, con spade e bastoni!	48 Then Jesus spoke. 'Am I a bandit,' he said, 'that you had to set out to capture me with swords andclubs?
49 Ogni giorno ero tra voi, mentre insegnavo nel tempio, e non mi avete preso. Ma si adempiano le Scritture!".	49 I was among you teaching in the Temple day after day and you never laid a hand on me. But this isto fulfil the scriptures.'
50 Allora i discepoli, abbandonatolo, fuggirono tutti.	50 And they al deserted him and ran away.
51 Un ragazzo, però, lo seguiva, avvolto solo di un panno di lino sul corpo nudo. Tentarono di afferrarlo;	51 A young man fol owed with nothing on but a linen cloth. They caught hold of him,
52 ma egli, lasciato cadere il panno di lino, se ne fuggì via nudo.	52 but he left the cloth in their hands and ran away naked.
53 Condotto Gesù dal sommo sacerdote, si radunarono tutti i capi dei sacerdoti, gli anziani e gli scribi.	53 They led Jesus off to the high priest; and all the chief priests and the elders and the scribesassembled there.
54 Pietro, intanto, avendolo seguito da lontano fin dentro al cortile del sommo sacerdote, se ne stava seduto con i servi di lui e si scaldava vicino al fuoco.	54 Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the high priest's palace, and was sitting with theattendants warming himself at the fire.
55 Or i capi dei sacerdoti e tutto il sinedrio cercavano qualche testimonianza contro Gesù per farlo morire, ma non ne trovavano.	55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus in order to havehim executed. But they could not find any.
56 Infatti, molti attestavano il falso contro di lui, ma le loro testimonianze non erano concordi.	56 Several, indeed, brought false witness against him, but their evidence was conflicting.
57 Allora si alzarono alcuni che, attestando il falso contro di lui, dicevano:	57 Some stood up and submitted this false evidence against him,
58 "L'abbiamo sentito noi mentre diceva: Io distruggerò questo tempio, fatto da mani d'uomo, e in tre giorni ne ricostruirò un altro, non fatto da mani d'uomo".	58 'We heard him say, "I am going to destroy this Temple made by human hands, and in three daysbuild another, not made by human hands." '
59 Ma anche su questo non si ebbe una testimonianza concorde.	59 But even on this point their evidence was conflicting.
60 Allora il sommo sacerdote, alzatosi in piedi in mezzo al sinedrio, interrogò Gesù dicendogli: "Non rispondi nulla? Che cosa testificano costoro contro di te?".	60 The high priest then rose before the whole assembly and put this question to Jesus, 'Have you noanswer to that? What is this evidence these men are bringing against you?'
61 Egli, però, taceva e non rispondeva nulla. Perciò il sommo sacerdote lo interrogò di nuovo dicendogli: "Sei tu il Cristo, il Figlio del Benedetto?".	61 But he was silent and made no answer at all. The high priest put a second question to him saying,'Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed One?'
62 Rispose Gesù: "Sì, sono io! E vedrete il Figlio dell'uomo, seduto alla destra della Potenza, venire con le nubi del cielo".	62 'I am,' said Jesus, 'and you wil see the Son of man seated at the right hand of the Power and comingwith the clouds of heaven.'
63 Allora il sommo sacerdote, stracciandosi le vesti, disse: "Di quale testimonianza abbiamo ancora bisogno?	63 The high priest tore his robes and said, 'What need of witnesses have we now?
64 Avete sentito la bestemmia. Che ve ne pare?". Tutti lo giudicarono reo di morte.	64 You heard the blasphemy. What is your finding?' Their verdict was unanimous: he deserved to die.
65 Alcuni, poi, si misero a sputargli addosso, a coprirgli il volto e a percuoterlo dicendogli: "Indovina!". E i servi lo presero a schiaffi.	65 Some of them started spitting at his face, hitting him and saying, 'Play the prophet!' And theattendants struck him too.
66 Or mentre Pietro se ne stava giù nel cortile, giunse una delle serve del sommo sacerdote	66 While Peter was down below in the courtyard, one of the high priest's servant-girls came up.
67 e, avendo visto Pietro che si scaldava, fissandolo gli disse: "Anche tu eri col Nazareno, Gesù".	67 She saw Peter warming himself there, looked closely at him and said, 'You too were with Jesus, theman from Nazareth.'
68 Ma egli negò: "Non so e non capisco cosa tu dici". Quindi uscì fuori nel vestibolo e un gallo cantò.	68 But he denied it. 'I do not know, I do not understand what you are talking about,' he said. And hewent out into the forecourt, and a cock crowed.
69 Vedutolo ancora, la serva incominciò a dire di nuovo ai presenti: "Costui è uno di loro".	69 The servant-girl saw him and again started tel ing the bystanders, 'This man is one of them.'
70 Ma egli negò nuovamente. Poco dopo i presenti dissero di nuovo a Pietro: "Sei davvero uno di loro. Infatti sei galileo".	70 But again he denied it. A little later the bystanders themselves said to Peter, 'You are certainly one ofthem! Why, you are a Galilean.'
71 Ma egli incominciò a imprecare e a giurare: "Non conosco quest'uomo di cui parlate".	71 But he started cursing and swearing, 'I do not know the man you speak of.'
72 E subito, per la seconda volta, un gallo cantò. Allora Pietro si ricordò delle parole che Gesù gli aveva detto: "Prima che il gallo canti due volte, mi rinnegherai tre volte"; e proruppe in pianto.	72 And at once the cock crowed for the second time, and Peter recalled what Jesus had said to him,'Before the cock crows twice, you will have disowned me three times.' And he burst into tears.
