1 Per questo furono giustamente castigati con le medesime cose e furono tormentati con una moltitudine di bestie.	1 Therefore they were fittingly punished by similar creatures, and were tormented by a swarm of insects.
2 Invece di questo castigo, beneficasti il tuo popolo; per soddisfarne l'ardente desiderio, preparasti un cibo di gusto meraviglioso, le quaglie,	2 Instead of this punishment, you benefited your people with a novel dish, the delight they craved, by providing quail for their food;
3 perché quelli che desideravano il cibo, per il disgusto delle bestie inviate loro contro, perdessero anche l'appetito naturale, mentre questi, divenuti bisognosi per breve tempo, gustassero un cibo meraviglioso.	3 That those others, when they desired food, since the creatures sent to plague them were so loathsome, should be turned from even the craving of necessities, While these, after a brief period of privation, partook of a novel dish.
4 Veramente era necessario che su quei tiranni sopravvenisse una inevitabile indigenza, ma a questi solo che si mostrasse come erano tormentati i loro nemici.	4 For upon those oppressors, inexorable want had to come; but these needed only be shown how their enemies were being tormented.
5 Quando infatti sopravvenne su di loro la furia terribile delle belve ed erano sterminati dai morsi di velenosi serpenti, la tua ira non durò sino alla fine.	5 For when the dire venom of beasts came upon them and they were dying from the bite of crooked serpents, your anger endured not to the end.
6 A scopo di ammonizione e per breve tempo furono tormentati, avendo avuto un segno di salvezza, perché conservassero il ricordo del precetto della tua legge.	6 But as a warning, for a short time they were terrorized, though they had a sign of salvation, to remind them of the precept of your law.
7 Infatti chi vi si volgeva, non era salvato da ciò che guardava, ma da te, salvatore di tutti.	7 For he who turned toward it was saved, not by what he saw, but by you, the savior of all.
8 Anche con questo persuadesti i nostri nemici che sei tu colui che libera da ogni male.	8 And by this also you convinced our foes that you are he who delivers from all evil.
9 Veramente li uccisero i morsi di cavallette e di mosche, né si trovò un rimedio per la loro vita, perché meritavano di essere castigati da tali bestie;	9 For the bites of locusts and of flies slew them, and no remedy was found to save their lives because they deserved to be punished by such means;
10 ma i denti di serpenti velenosi non vinsero i tuoi figli, poiché intervenne la tua misericordia e li guarì.	10 But not even the fangs of poisonous reptiles overcame your sons, for your mercy brought the antidote to heal them.
11 Perché conservassero il ricordo delle tue parole, erano puniti e subito salvati, per timore che, caduti in un profondo oblio, fossero esclusi dai tuoi benefici.	11 For as a reminder of your injunctions, they were stung, and swiftly they were saved, Lest they should fall into deep forgetfulness and become unresponsive to your beneficence.
12 Non li guarì né erba né unguento, ma la tua parola, Signore, che tutto sana.	12 For indeed, neither herb nor application cured them, but your all-healing word, O LORD!
13 Tu infatti hai potere sulla vita e sulla morte, conduci alle porte degl'inferi e riconduci indietro.	13 For you have dominion over life and death; you lead down to the gates of the nether world, and lead back.
14 L'uomo nella sua malvagità può uccidere, ma non può richiamare lo spirito che è uscito, né liberare un'anima che è stata rinchiusa.	14 Man, however, slays in his malice, but when the spirit has come away, it does not return, nor can he bring back the soul once it is confined.
15 E' impossibile sfuggire alla tua mano.	15 But your hand none can escape.
16 Gli empi, che rifiutavano di conoscerti, furono puniti con la forza del tuo braccio, perseguitati da insolite piogge, da grandine e da uragani spaventosi e consumati dal fuoco.	16 For the wicked who refused to know you were punished by the might of your arm, Pursued by unwonted rains and hailstorms and unremitting downpours, and consumed by fire.
17 E, cosa mirabile, nell'acqua che tutto spegne, il fuoco prendeva maggior vigore, poiché difensore dei giusti è l'universo.	17 For against all expectation, in water which quenches anything, the fire grew more active; For the universe fights on behalf of the just.
18 Talvolta veramente la fiamma si mitigava per non consumare gli animali inviati contro gli empi, ma perché essi, a tal vista, comprendessero che erano incalzati dal giudizio di Dio;	18 For now the flame was tempered so that the beasts might not be burnt up that were sent upon the wicked, but that these might see and know they were struck by the judgment of God;
19 altre volte anche in mezzo all'acqua la fiamma bruciava oltre la potenza del fuoco, per distruggere i prodotti di una terra iniqua.	19 And again, even in the water, fire blazed beyond its strength so as to consume the produce of the wicked land.
20 Al contrario nutristi il tuo popolo con il cibo degli angeli e preparasti per loro dal cielo un pane già pronto, senza fatica, capace di procurare ogni delizia e di soddisfare ogni gusto.	20 Instead of this, you nourished your people with food of angels and furnished them bread from heaven, ready to hand, untoiled-for, endowed with all delights and conforming to every taste.
21 Veramente quel tuo sostentamento manifestava la tua dolcezza per i figli, adattandosi al desiderio di chi ne mangiava, si mutava in ciò che uno voleva.	21 For this substance of yours revealed your sweetness toward your children, and serving the desire of him who received it, was blended to whatever flavor each one wished.
22 Neve e ghiaccio resistevano al fuoco e non si consumavano, perché conoscessero che il fuoco, divampante tra la grandine e sfolgorante tra la pioggia, distruggeva i frutti dei nemici.	22 Yet snow and ice withstood fire and were not melted, that they might know that their enemies' fruits Were consumed by a fire that blazed in the hail and flashed lightning in the rain.
23 Ma questo, al contrario, per nutrire i giusti, dimenticava anche la propria potenza.	23 But this fire, again, that the just might be nourished, forgot even its proper strength;
24 La creazione, infatti, servendo a te che l'hai fatta, si eccita in punizione contro gli ingiusti e si distende a beneficio di quanti confidano in te.	24 For your creation, serving you, its maker, grows tense for punishment against the wicked, but is relaxed in benefit for those who trust in you.
25 Per questo anche allora, piegandosi a tutto, serviva al tuo dono che tutto nutre, secondo il desiderio di quanti erano nel bisogno,	25 Therefore at that very time, transformed in all sorts of ways, it was serving your all-nourishing bounty according to what they needed and desired;
26 perché i tuoi figli, che ami, Signore, imparassero che non i diversi frutti fanno vivere l'uomo, ma la tua parola conserva in vita quanti credono in te.	26 That your sons whom you loved might learn, O LORD, that it is not the various kinds of fruits that nourish man, but it is your word that preserves those who believe you!
27 Infatti, ciò che non era stato distrutto dal fuoco, subito si scioglieva, riscaldato da un semplice raggio di sole	27 For what was not destroyed by fire, when merely warmed by a momentary sunbeam, melted;
28 perché fosse noto che è necessario prevenire il sole per renderti grazie e incontrarti al sorgere della luce,	28 So that men might know that one must give you thanks before the sunrise, and turn to you at daybreak.
29 poiché la speranza dell'ingrato si scioglierà come brina invernale e scorrerà via come acqua inutile.	29 For the hope of the ingrate melts like a wintry frost and runs off like useless water.
