1 C'era nella regione di Uz un uomo chiamato Giobbe. Quest'uomo era integro e retto, timorato di Dio e alieno dal male.	1 There was a man in the land of Uz named Job, and he was a simple and honest man, fearing God and withdrawing from evil.
2 Gli erano nati sette figli e tre figlie.	2 And there had been born to him seven sons and three daughters.
3 Possedeva settemila pecore, tremila cammelli, cinquecento coppie di buoi, cinquecento asine e una numerosissima servitù. Quest'uomo era il più ricco fra tutti gli orientali.	3 And his possession was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, along with five hundred pairs of oxen and five hundred she-donkeys, and also a very large family. And this man was great among all the people of the east.
4 Ora, i suoi figli solevano celebrare dei banchetti a turno in casa di uno e dell'altro e mandavano a invitare le loro tre sorelle per banchettare insieme.	4 And his sons went and made a feast by houses, each one on his day. And sending, they called their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
5 Terminato il ciclo dei conviti, Giobbe li faceva venire per purificarli; si alzava di buon mattino e offriva un olocausto per ognuno di essi, perché diceva: "Forse i miei figli hanno peccato oltraggiando Dio nel loro cuore". Giobbe soleva fare così immancabilmente.	5 And when the days of their feasting had been completed, Job sent to them and sanctified them, and, getting up at dawn, he offered holocausts for each one. For he said, “Perhaps my sons have sinned and have not praised God in their hearts.” So Job did all the days.
6 Però un giorno i figli di Dio andarono a presentarsi davanti al Signore e tra di essi venne anche satana.	6 But on a certain day, when the sons of God came to attend in the presence of the Lord, Satan also arrived among them.
7 Il Signore disse a satana: "Da dove vieni?". Satana rispose al Signore: "Dal vagabondare sulla terra dopo averla girata".	7 The Lord said to him, “Where do you come from?” Answering, he said, “I have circled the land, and walked around in it.”
8 E il Signore a satana: "Hai fatto attenzione al mio servo Giobbe? Sulla terra non c'è un altro come lui: uomo integro e retto, timorato di Dio e alieno dal male".	8 And the Lord said to him, “Have you not considered my servant, Job? For there is no one like him in the land, a simple and honest man, fearing God and withdrawing from evil.”
9 Satana rispose al Signore: "Forse che Giobbe teme Dio per niente?	9 Answering him, Satan said, “Does Job fear God to no purpose?
10 Non hai forse protetto con uno steccato lui, la sua casa e tutto ciò che possiede? Tu hai benedetto le sue imprese e i suoi greggi si dilatano nella regione.	10 Have you not fortified him, as well as his house and every one of his belongings around him, blessed the works of his hands, and his possession has increased in the land?
11 Ma stendi la tua mano e colpisci i suoi beni e vedrai come ti maledirà in faccia!".	11 But extend your hand a little, and touch all that he possesses, and see if he still praises you to your face.”
12 Il Signore disse a satana: "Ecco, tutto ciò che è suo, è in tuo potere; però non portare la tua mano sulla sua persona". E satana si ritirò dalla presenza del Signore.	12 Therefore, the Lord said to Satan, “Behold, everything that he has is in your hand, only do not extend your hand against him.” And Satan departed from the face of the Lord.
13 Or avvenne che il giorno in cui i suoi figli e le sue figlie mangiavano e bevevano in casa del loro fratello maggiore,	13 So, on a certain day, when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine, in the house of their first-born brother,
14 giunse un messaggero da Giobbe e disse: "Mentre i buoi stavano arando e le asine erano al pascolo nelle vicinanze,	14 a messenger came to Job, who said, “The oxen were plowing, and the donkeys were grazing beside them,
15 irruppero i Sabei, li depredarono e passarono a fil di spada i guardiani. Io solo sono scampato per venirtelo a dire".	15 and the Sabeans rushed in and carried away everything, and they struck the servants with the sword; and I alone evaded them to tell you.”
16 Mentre costui stava ancora parlando, giunse un altro a dire: "Il fuoco di Dio è caduto dal cielo, bruciò le pecore e i guardiani incenerendoli. Io solo sono scampato per venirtelo a dire".	16 And while he was still speaking, another arrived, and he said, “The fire of God fell from heaven, and, having struck the sheep and the servants, it consumed them; and I alone escaped to tell you.”
17 Mentre costui stava ancora parlando, giunse un altro a dire: "I Caldei, divisi in tre gruppi, si precipitarono sui cammelli, li presero e passarono a fil di spada i guardiani. Io solo sono scampato per venirtelo a dire".	17 And while he also was still speaking, another arrived, and he said, “The Chaldeans organized three attacks, and advanced on the camels and took them; and not only that, but they have struck the servants with the sword; and I alone fled to tell you.”
18 Mentre costui stava ancora parlando, giunse un altro a dire: "I tuoi figli e le tue figlie stavano ancora mangiando e bevendo vino nella casa del loro fratello maggiore,	18 He was still speaking, and behold, another entered, and he said, “Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine in the house of their first-born brother,
19 quando un vento impetuoso venendo da oltre il deserto investì i quattro angoli della casa; questa cadde sui giovani, che sono morti. Io solo sono scampato per venirtelo a dire".	19 when suddenly a severe wind rushed forth from a region of the desert and shook the four corners of the house, which collapsed and crushed your children, and they are dead; and I alone escaped to tell you.”
20 Allora Giobbe, alzatosi, si strappò il manto, si rase il capo e, caduto a terra, prostrato	20 Then Job got up and tore his garments, and, having shaved his head, he collapsed on the ground, and worshipped,
21 disse: "Nudo sono uscito dal ventre di mia madre e nudo vi farò ritorno! Il Signore ha dato e il Signore ha tolto; sia benedetto il nome del Signore".	21 and he said, “Naked I departed from my mother’s womb, and naked I shall return. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Just as it pleased the Lord, so has it been done. Blessed be the name of the Lord.”
22 In tutto ciò Giobbe non commise peccato né proferì alcuna insolenza contro Dio.	22 In all this, Job did not sin by his lips, nor did he speak any foolish thing against God.
