1 Quando la città santa godeva di una pace completa e le leggi vi erano osservate nel migliore dei modi, grazie alla pietà del sommo sacerdote Onia e al suo odio per il male,	1 While the holy city lived in perfect peace and the laws were strictly observed because of the piety of the high priest Onias and his hatred of evil,
2 gli stessi re onoravano il luogo santo e glorificavano il tempio con i doni più splendidi,	2 the kings themselves honored the Place and glorified the temple with the most magnificent gifts.
3 al punto che anche Selèuco, re dell'Asia, provvedeva con le proprie rendite a tutte le spese occorrenti per la liturgia dei sacrifici.	3 Thus Seleucus, king of Asia, defrayed from his own revenues all the expenses necessary for the sacrificial services.
4 Or un certo Simone, della tribù di Bilga, essendo stato costituito soprintendente del tempio, venne a trovarsi in contrasto con il sommo sacerdote circa l'amministrazione della città.	4 But a certain Simon, of the priestly course of Bilgah, who had been appointed superintendent of the temple, had a quarrel with the high priest about the supervision of the city market.
5 Pertanto, non riuscendo a prevalere su Onia, andò da Apollonio di Tarso, che in quel tempo era governatore della Celesiria e della Fenicia,	5 Since he could not prevail against Onias, he went to Apollonius of Tarsus, who at that time was governor of Coelesyria and Phoenicia,
6 e gli riferì che la camera del tesoro in Gerusalemme era talmente piena di indicibili ricchezze, che la quantità delle somme era incalcolabile; esse poi non avevano nulla a che fare con le spese per i sacrifici ed era possibile farle cadere in potere del re.	6 and reported to him that the treasury in Jerusalem was so full of untold riches that the total sum of money was incalculable and out of all proportion to the cost of the sacrifices, and that it would be possible to bring it all under the control of the king.
7 Apollonio, a sua volta, incontratosi con il re, lo mise al corrente delle ricchezze che gli erano state denunziate. Questi, allora, scelto il ministro Eliodoro, lo inviò a Gerusalemme, dandogli ordine di compiere la confisca delle predette ricchezze.	7 When Apollonius had an audience with the king, he informed him about the riches that had been reported to him. The king chose his minister Heliodorus and sent him with instructions to expropriate the aforesaid wealth.
8 Eliodoro si mise subito in cammino, in apparenza come per visitare le città della Celesiria e della Fenicia, ma in realtà per eseguire il disegno del re.	8 So Heliodorus immediately set out on his journey, ostensibly to visit the cities of Coelesyria and Phoenicia, but in reality to carry out the king's purpose.
9 Giunto a Gerusalemme e accolto con benevolenza dal sommo sacerdote e dalla città, riferì l'informazione ricevuta e manifestò il motivo per cui era venuto, chiedendo poi se per caso le cose stessero veramente in tal modo.	9 When he arrived in Jerusalem and had been graciously received by the high priest of the city, he told him about the information that had been given, and explained the reason for his presence, and he asked if these things were really true.
10 Il sommo sacerdote allora gli spiegò che i depositi erano delle vedove e degli orfani	10 The high priest explained that part of the money was a care fund for widows and orphans,
11 e una parte anche di Ircano, figlio di Tobia, uomo collocato in alta posizione; che, al contrario di quanto falsamente aveva detto l'empio Simone, si trattava in tutto di quattrocento talenti d'argento e di duecento d'oro;	11 and a part was the property of Hyrcanus, son of Tobias, a man who occupied a very high position. Contrary to the calumnies of the impious Simon, the total amounted to four hundred talents of silver and two hundred of gold.
12 e che, infine, doveva essere assolutamente impossibile far torto a coloro che avevano confidato nella santità del luogo e nella maestà e inviolabilità del tempio, venerato in tutto il mondo.	12 He added that it was utterly unthinkable to defraud those who had placed their trust in the sanctity of the Place and in the sacred inviolability of a temple venerated all over the world.
13 Eliodoro, però, in forza degli ordini che aveva dal re, rispose che in ogni modo essi dovevano essere confiscati a favore del tesoro reale.	13 But because of the orders he had from the king, Heliodorus said that in any case the money must be confiscated for the royal treasury.
14 Fissò un giorno e si presentò per dirigere l'ispezione. In tutta la città vi era intanto una non piccola agitazione.	14 So on the day he had set he went in to take an inventory of the funds. There was great distress throughout the city.
15 I sacerdoti, prostrati davanti all'altare nelle loro vesti sacre, invocavano il cielo che, avendo fissato la legge sui depositi, conservasse intatti tali beni a coloro che ve li avevano depositati.	15 Priests prostrated themselves in their priestly robes before the altar, and loudly begged him in heaven who had given the law about deposits to keep the deposits safe for those who had made them.
16 Chi poi osservava l'aspetto del sommo sacerdote ne era ferito fino al cuore, poiché lo sguardo e l'alterazione del colore ne rivelavano l'angoscia dell'anima.	16 Whoever saw the appearance of the high priest was pierced to the heart, for the changed color of his face manifested the anguish of his soul.
17 Su quest'uomo, infatti, si era diffuso uno spavento e insieme un tremito del corpo, per cui agli spettatori si faceva manifesto il dolore che era dentro al suo cuore.	17 The terror and bodily trembling that had come over the man clearly showed those who saw him the pain that lodged in his heart.
18 Dalle case intanto gli uomini a frotte balzavano fuori per fare una pubblica supplica a causa dell'affronto che il luogo santo stava per subire.	18 People rushed out of their houses in crowds to make public supplication, because the Place was in danger of being profaned.
19 Le donne, a loro volta, cinti i cilizi sotto ai seni, affluivano per le strade, mentre le fanciulle, tenute chiuse, accorrevano alcune alle porte e altre sulle mura, mentre alcune si affacciavano dalle finestre.	19 Women, girded with sackcloth below their breasts, filled the streets; maidens secluded indoors ran together, some to the gates, some to the walls, others peered through the windows,
20 Tutte, le mani tese al cielo, recitavano preghiere.	20 all of them with hands raised toward heaven, making supplication.
21 Era commovente vedere la prostrazione confusa di quella folla e l'ansia del sommo sacerdote in preda a una grande angoscia.	21 It was pitiful to see the populace variously prostrated in prayer and the high priest full of dread and anguish.

24 Con i suoi compagni, egli era già sul posto, presso la camera del tesoro, quando il Signore degli spiriti e di ogni potestà compì un'apparizione così grande che tutti coloro che avevano osato entrare, colpiti dalla potenza di Dio, furono travolti nella spossatezza e nello spavento.	24 But just as he was approaching the treasury with his bodyguards, the Lord of spirits who holds all power manifested himself in so striking a way that those who had been bold enough to follow Heliodorus were panic-stricken at God's power and fainted away in terror.
25 Apparve loro un cavallo, ornato di una magnifica bardatura e con sopra un terribile cavaliere. Si muoveva impetuosamente e lanciava contro Eliodoro i suoi zoccoli anteriori. Chi lo cavalcava sembrava avere un'armatura d'oro.	25 There appeared to them a richly caparisoned horse, mounted by a dreadful rider. Charging furiously, the horse attacked Heliodorus with its front hoofs. The rider was seen to be wearing golden armor.
26 Davanti a lui comparvero altri due giovani, straordinari per la forza, splendidi per bellezza e magnifici nel loro abbigliamento, i quali, postiglisi ciascuno da un lato, lo flagellavano ininterrottamente, sferrandogli numerose sferzate.	26 Then two other young men, remarkably strong, strikingly beautiful, and splendidly attired, appeared before him. Standing on each side of him, they flogged him unceasingly until they had given him innumerable blows.
27 Caduto d'un tratto a terra e avvolto da una profonda oscurità, dovettero prenderlo e deporlo su una lettiga.	27 Suddenly he fell to the ground, enveloped in great darkness. Men picked him up and laid him on a stretcher.
28 Colui che poco prima era entrato nella suddetta camera del tesoro con numeroso seguito e con tutta la sua guardia del corpo, fu portato via così, reso incapace d'aiutarsi da se stesso, avendo tutti riconosciuto apertamente la potenza di Dio.	28 The man who a moment before had entered that treasury with a great retinue and his whole bodyguard was carried away helpless, having clearly experienced the sovereign power of God.
29 E mentre egli, a causa della divina potenza, giaceva senza parola, privo di ogni speranza di salvezza,	29 While he lay speechless and deprived of all hope of aid, due to an act of God's power,
30 gli altri benedicevano il Signore che aveva glorificato il suo luogo; sicché il tempio che poco prima era pieno di terrore e spavento, quando fu apparso il Signore onnipotente si riempì di gioia e di allegrezza.	30 the Jews praised the Lord who had marvelously glorified his holy Place; and the temple, charged so shortly before with fear and commotion, was filled with joy and gladness, now that the almighty Lord had manifested himself.
31 Subito però alcuni dei compagni di Eliodoro pregarono Onia di supplicare l'Altissimo affinché facesse grazia della vita a quell'uomo, che ormai era all'ultimo respiro.	31 Soon some of the companions of Heliodorus begged Onias to invoke the Most High, praying that the life of the man who was about to expire might be spared.
32 Il sommo sacerdote allora, temendo che forse il re avrebbe avuto il sospetto che qualche cattiveria fosse stata compiuta dai Giudei contro Eliodoro, offrì un sacrificio per la salute dell'uomo.	32 Fearing that the king might think that Heliodorus had suffered some foul play at the hands of the Jews, the high priest offered a sacrifice for the man's recovery.
33 Mentre il sommo sacerdote compiva l'espiazione, gli stessi giovani comparvero di nuovo ad Eliodoro, rivestiti delle medesime vesti, e restando in piedi gli dissero: "Abbi molta gratitudine per il sommo sacerdote Onia, perché per merito suo il Signore ti ha fatto grazia della vita.	33 While the high priest was offering the sacrifice of atonement, the same young men in the same clothing again appeared and stood before Heliodorus. "Be very grateful to the high priest Onias," they told him. "It is for his sake that the Lord has spared your life.
34 Tu poi, flagellato dal cielo, annunzia a tutti la grande potenza di Dio". Detto ciò, divennero invisibili.	34 Since you have been scourged by Heaven, proclaim to all men the majesty of God's power." When they had said this, they disappeared.
35 Eliodoro allora, offerto un sacrificio al Signore e fatti grandi voti a chi lo aveva fatto vivere, salutò Onia e fece ritorno dal re,	35 After Heliodorus had offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made most solemn vows to him who had spared his life, he bade Onias farewell, and returned with his soldiers to the king.
36 rendendo testimonianza a tutti delle opere del grandissimo Dio, che egli aveva visto con i suoi occhi.	36 Before all men he gave witness to the deeds of the most high God that he had seen with his own eyes.
37 In seguito, avendo il re domandato a Eliodoro chi fosse adatto ad essere inviato ancora una volta a Gerusalemme, egli rispose:	37 When the king asked Heliodorus who would be a suitable man to be sent to Jerusalem next, he answered:
38 "Se hai qualche nemico o avversario negli affari, mandalo là e lo riceverai poi ben flagellato, se davvero ne riuscirà salvo, poiché intorno a quel luogo vi è veramente una forza divina.	38 "If you have an enemy or a plotter against the government, send him there, and you will receive him back well-flogged, if indeed he survives at all; for there is certainly some special divine power about the Place.
39 Infatti Colui che ha una abitazione nei cieli, è vigile custode di quel luogo e percuote e annienta coloro che vi si avvicinano per operarvi il male".	39 He who has his dwelling in heaven watches over that Place and protects it, and he strikes down and destroys those who come to harm it."
40 In questo modo, dunque, si svolsero i fatti relativi a Eliodoro e alla conservazione del tesoro.	40 This was how the matter concerning Heliodorus and the preservation of the treasury turned out.
