Ester 9

LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Nel dodicesimo mese, il mese di Adar, nel giorno tredicesimo, quando arrivò l'ordine del re e il suo editto per essere eseguito, nel mese in cui i nemici degli Ebrei avevano sperato di trionfare su di essi, la situazione si capovolse e gli Ebrei trionfarono su coloro che li odiavano.	1 The king's command and decree came into force on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, Adar, andthe day on which the enemies of the Jews had hoped to crush them produced the very opposite effect: the Jewsit was who crushed their enemies.
2 Gli Ebrei si radunarono nelle loro città in ogni provincia del re Assuero per alzare la mano contro coloro che avessero voluto far loro del male e nessuno resistette loro, perché il timore di essi aveva preso tutti i popoli.	2 In their towns throughout the provinces of King Ahasuerus, the Jews assembled to strike at those whohad planned to injure them. No one resisted them, since the various peoples were now al afraid of them.
3 Tutti i prìncipi delle province, i satrapi e i governatori al servizio del re sostenevano gli Ebrei, perché anch'essi erano presi dal timore di Mardocheo.	3 Provincial officers-of-state, satraps, governors and royal officials, al supported the Jews for fear ofMordecai.
4 Mardocheo infatti era grande nella casa del re e la sua fama si spargeva in ogni provincia, tanto che egli, Mardocheo, diventava sempre più grande.	4 And indeed Mordecai was a power in the palace and his fame was spreading through al the provinces;Mordecai was steadily growing more powerful.
5 Gli Ebrei colpirono i loro nemici a colpi di spada: uccisioni e massacri! Fecero quello che vollero di coloro che li odiavano.	5 So the Jews struck down al their enemies with the sword, with resulting slaughter and destruction, andworked their wil on their opponents.
6 Anche nella cittadella di Susa gli Ebrei fecero uccisioni e perirono cinquecento persone;	6 In the citadel of Susa alone, the Jews put to death and slaughtered five hundred men,
7 misero a morte Parsandàta, Dalfòr, Aspàta,	7 notably Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,
8 Poràta, Adalia, Aridàta,	8 Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha,
9 Parmàsta, Arisài, Aridài e Vaizàta:	9 Parmashtha, Arisai, Aridai and Jezatha,
10 uccisero i dieci figli di Aman, figlio di Ammedàta, persecutore degli Ebrei, ma non stesero la mano sul bottino.	10 the ten sons of Haman son of Hammedatha, the persecutor of the Jews. But they took no plunder.
11 Quando il numero degli uccisi venne a conoscenza del re,	11 The number of those kil ed in the citadel of Susa was reported to the king that same day.
12 questi disse alla regina Ester: "Nella cittadella di Susa gli Ebrei hanno ucciso cinquecento uomini e i dieci figli di Aman; nelle altre province del re che cosa hanno fatto? Che cosa chiedi di più? Ti sarà dato. Che cosa desideri, perché ti sia fatto?".	12 The king said to Queen Esther, 'In the citadel of Susa the Jews have killed five hundred men and alsothe ten sons of Haman. What must they have done in the other provinces of the realm? Tel me your request; Igrant it to you. Tel me what else you would like; it is yours for the asking.'
13 Ester disse: "Se sembrerà conveniente al re, sia concesso agli Ebrei di applicare ancora domani l'editto come hanno fatto oggi, e i dieci figli di Aman siano appesi a un patibolo".	13 'If such is the king's pleasure,' Esther replied, 'let the Jews of Susa be al owed to enforce today'sdecree tomorrow as well. And as for the ten sons of Haman, let their bodies be hanged on the gal ows.'
14 Il re disse che così fosse fatto e fu promulgato un editto nella cittadella di Susa e i figli di Aman furono appesi al patibolo.	14 Whereupon, the king having given the order, the edict was promulgated in Susa and the ten sons ofHaman were hanged.
15 Gli Ebrei che si trovavano a Susa si radunarono anche nel quattordicesimo giorno del mese di Adar e uccisero a Susa trecento uomini, senza tuttavia stendere la mano sul bottino.	15 Thus the Jews of Susa reassembled on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and kil ed threehundred men in the city. But they took no plunder.
16 Gli altri Ebrei delle province del re si radunarono per difendere le loro vite e avere tranquillità da parte dei loro nemici, e fra quelli che li odiavano uccisero settantacinquemila persone, senza metter le mani sul bottino.	16 The other Jews who lived in the king's provinces also assembled to defend their lives and ridthemselves of their enemies. They slaughtered seventy-five thousand of their opponents. But they took noplunder.
17 Era il giorno tredici del mese di Adar; il quattordici si riposarono e fecero banchetti e allegria.	17 This was on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar. On the fourteenth day they rested and made it aday of feasting and gladness.
18 Gli Ebrei che si trovavano a Susa si radunarono il giorno tredici e il quattordici dello stesso mese e il quindici si riposarono e nello stesso giorno fecero banchetti e allegria.	18 But for the Jews of Susa, who had assembled on the thirteenth and fourteenth days, the fifteenth wasthe day they rested, making that a day of feasting and gladness.
19 E' per questo che gli Ebrei sparsi qua e là, che abitano in città lontane, il quattordici del mese di Adar fanno allegria, banchetti e festa e si scambiano doni.	19 This is why Jewish country people, those who live in undefended vil ages, keep the fourteenth day ofthe month of Adar as a day of gladness, feasting and holiday-making, and the exchanging of presents with oneanother, (a) whereas for those who live in cities the day of rejoicing and exchanging presents with theirneighbours is the fifteenth day of Adar.
20 Mardocheo mise per iscritto tutte queste cose e mandò lettere a tutti gli Ebrei che si trovavano nelle province del re Assuero, in quelle vicine e in quelle lontane,	20 Mordecai committed these events to writing. Then he sent letters to all the Jews living in the provincesof King Ahasuerus, both near and far,
21 per impegnarli a festeggiare ogni anno il giorno quattordici del mese di Adar e il giorno quindici dello stesso mese,	21 enjoining them to celebrate the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar every year,
22 essendo questi i giorni nei quali gli Ebrei ebbero pace dai loro nemici, e questo il mese in cui la loro sorte cambiò dall'angoscia alla gioia, dal lutto alla festa, diventando questi giorni di festino e di gaudio, di scambio di doni e di offerte ai poveri.	22 as the days on which the Jews had rid themselves of their enemies, and the month in which theirsorrow had been turned into gladness, and mourning into a holiday. He therefore told them to keep these asdays of festivity and gladness when they were to exchange presents and make gifts to the poor.
23 Gli Ebrei accettarono come una istituzione quelle cose che avevano cominciato a fare e che Mardocheo aveva scritto loro:	23 Once having begun, the Jews continued observing these practices, Mordecai having written them anaccount
24 Aman, figlio di Ammedàta, l'agaghita, persecutore di tutti gli Ebrei, decretò di sterminare gli Ebrei e gettò il pur, cioè la sorte, per massacrarli e distruggerli.	24 of how Haman son of Hammedatha, the Agagite, the persecutor of al the Jews, had plotted theirdestruction and had cast the pur, that is, the lot, for their overthrow and ruin;
25 Ma quando la regina Ester fu entrata alla presenza del re, egli ordinò con uno scritto che la malvagità che Aman aveva tramato contro gli Ebrei ricadesse sul suo capo e fece impiccare lui e i suoi figli al patibolo.	25 but how, when he went back to the king to ask him to order the hanging of Mordecai, the wickedscheme which he had devised against the Jews recoiled on his own head, and both he and his sons werehanged on the gallows;
26 Perciò quei giorni furono chiamati Purim, dalla parola pur. In conseguenza di tutte le cose dette in questa lettera e di quello che avevano visto ed era accaduto loro,	26 and that, hence, these days were cal ed Purim, from the word pur. And so, because of what waswritten in this letter, and because of what they had seen for themselves and of what had happened to them,
27 gli Ebrei stabilirono di assumersi l'impegno, essi e i loro figli e tutti coloro che sarebbero venuti a unirsi a loro, di non mancare di festeggiare questi due giorni, secondo quanto era stato scritto, al tempo stabilito ogni anno.	27 the Jews wil ingly bound themselves, their descendants and al who should join them, to celebratethese two days without fail, in the manner prescribed and at the time appointed, year after year.
28 Questi giorni vengono ricordati e festeggiati in ogni generazione, in ogni famiglia, in ogni provincia e città, e i giorni di Purim non spariranno in mezzo agli Ebrei e il loro ricordo non si allontanerà dalla loro discendenza.	28 Thus commemorated and celebrated from generation to generation, in every family, in every province,in every city, these days of Purim will never be abrogated among the Jews, nor will their memory perish fromtheir race.
29 La regina Ester, figlia di Abicàil, e l'ebreo Mardocheo scrissero, con piena autorità, per confermare questa seconda lettera relativa ai Purim.	29 Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, wrote with ful authority to ratify this second letter,
30 E mandarono lettere a tutti gli Ebrei, nelle centoventisette province del regno di Assuero, con parole di pace e di fedeltà,	30 and sent letters to all the Jews of the hundred and twenty-seven provinces of the realm of Ahasuerus,in terms of peace and loyalty
31 affinché osservassero questi giorni di Purim nel tempo stabilito, come avevano deciso l'ebreo Mardocheo e la regina Ester, e come avevano stabilito per se stessi e i loro discendenti riguardo ai digiuni e ai lamenti.	31 enjoining them to observe these days of Purim at the appointed time, as Mordecai the Jew hadrecommended, and in the manner prescribed for themselves and their descendants, with additional ordinancesfor fasts and lamentations.
32 Così l'ordinanza di Ester fissò la prassi della festa di Purim e fu scritta in un libro.	32 The ordinance of Esther fixed the law of Purim, which was then recorded in a book.
