LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Cessato il tumulto della gente radunata tutt'intorno in assemblea, Oloferne, comandante in capo dell'esercito di Assur, si rivolse ad Achior, in presenza di tutta quella folla di stranieri, e a tutti i Moabiti:	1 When the uproar of those crowding round the council had subsided, Holofernes, general-in-chief of theAssyrian army, reprimanded Achior in front of the whole crowd of foreigners and Ammonites.
2 "E chi sei, o Achior, tu e i mercenari di Efraim, per fare il profeta in mezzo a noi, come hai fatto oggi, e suggerire di non far guerra al popolo d'Israele, perché il loro Dio farà loro da scudo? Chi è dio all'infuori di Nabucodònosor? Egli invierà le sue forze e li sterminerà dalla faccia della terra e il loro Dio non potrà salvarli;	2 'Achior, who do you think you are, you and the Ephraimite mercenaries, playing the prophet like this withus today, and trying to dissuade us from making war on the people of Israel? You claim their God wil protectthem. And who is God if not Nebuchadnezzar? He himself wil display his power and wipe them off the face ofthe earth, and their God wil certainly not save them.
3 ma noi, suoi servitori, li colpiremo come un sol uomo, poiché non potranno sostenere l'impeto dei nostri cavalli.	3 But we, his servants, shal destroy them as easily as a single individual. They can never resist thestrength of our cavalry.
4 Li bruceremo sul loro territorio, i loro monti saranno ebbri del loro sangue, i loro campi saranno ripieni dei loro cadaveri; non potrà resistere la pianta dei loro piedi davanti a noi, ma saranno certamente annientati. Questo dice il re Nabucodònosor, il signore di tutta la terra. Egli infatti ha parlato e le sue parole non cadranno a vuoto.	4 We shal burn them all. Their mountains will be drunk with their blood and their plains filled with theircorpses. Far from being able to resist us, every one of them wil die; thus says King Nebuchadnezzar, lord of thewhole world. For he has spoken, and his words will not prove empty.
5 Quanto a te, Achior, mercenario di Ammon, che hai proferito queste parole nel giorno della tua iniquità, a partire da questo giorno non vedrai più la mia faccia, fino a quando non mi sarò vendicato di questa razza che viene dall'Egitto.	5 As for you, Achior, you Ammonite mercenary, who in a rash moment said these words, you wil not seemy face again until the day when I have taken my revenge on this brood from Egypt.
6 Allora il ferro del mio esercito e la moltitudine dei miei ministri ti trapasserà i fianchi, e cadrai in mezzo ai loro morti, quando ritornerò a vederti.	6 And then the swords of my soldiers and the spears of my officers wil pierce your sides. You wil falamong their wounded, the moment I turn on Israel.
7 I miei servi per ora ti esporranno sulla montagna e ti lasceranno in una delle città di accesso	7 My servants wil now take you into the hill-country and leave you near one of the towns in the passes;
8 e non perirai, finché non sarai sterminato insieme ad essi.	8 you wil not die, until you share their ruin.
9 Se poi davvero speri in cuor tuo che non saranno presi, non tenere un'aria così abbattuta. Ho detto: nessuna delle mie parole cadrà a vuoto".	9 No need to look so sad if you cherish the secret hope that they wil not be captured! I have spoken; noneof my words will prove idle.'
10 Oloferne quindi ordinò ai suoi servi, che prestavano servizio nella tenda, di prendere Achior, di condurlo verso Betulia e di consegnarlo nelle mani degli Israeliti.	10 Holofernes having commanded his tent-orderlies to seize Achior, to take him to Bethulia and to handhim over to the Israelites,
11 Così i suoi servi lo presero, lo condussero fuori dell'accampamento verso la pianura, poi dalla pianura lo spinsero verso la montagna, finché giunsero alle sorgenti che erano sotto Betulia.	11 the orderlies took him, escorted him out of the camp and across the plain, and then, making for the hil -country, reached the springs below Bethulia.
12 Quando gli uomini della città li videro salire sulla cresta del monte, impugnarono le armi, uscirono dalla città dirigendosi verso la sommità della montagna, mentre tutti i frombolieri, dopo aver occupato la via d'accesso, lanciavano pietre sopra di loro.	12 As soon as the men of the town sighted them, they snatched up their weapons, left the town and madefor the mountain tops, while al the slingers pelted them with stones to prevent them from coming up.
13 Questi, scendendo il monte a ridosso, legarono Achior e dopo averlo gettato a terra alle falde del monte, lo abbandonarono e fecero ritorno al loro signore.	13 However, they managed to take cover at the foot of the slope, where they bound Achior and left himlying at the bottom of the mountain and returned to their master.
14 Scesi dalla loro città, gl'Israeliti gli si accostarono e, slegatolo, lo condussero a Betulia e lo presentarono ai capi della loro città,	14 The Israelites then came down from their town, stopped by him, unbound him and took him to Bethulia,where they brought him before the chief men of the town,
15 che erano allora Ozia, figlio di Mica della tribù di Simeone, Cabri, figlio di Gotonièl, e Carmi, figlio di Melchièl.	15 who at that time were Uzziah son of Micah of the tribe of Simeon, Chabris son of Gothoniel andCharmis son of Melchiel.
16 Convocarono tosto tutti gli anziani della città; tutti i loro giovani e le donne accorsero all'adunanza. Achior fu posto in mezzo a tutto il popolo e Ozia lo interrogò su ciò che era accaduto.	16 These summoned al the elders of the town. The young men and the women also hurried to theassembly. Achior was made to stand with al the people surrounding him, and Uzziah questioned him about whathad happened.
17 In risposta egli riferì loro le parole del consiglio di Oloferne e tutto il discorso che egli stesso aveva pronunciato in mezzo ai capi degli Assiri e con quanta insolenza Oloferne si era espresso contro il popolo d'Israele.	17 He answered by tel ing them what had been said at Holofernes' council, and what he himself had saidin the presence of the Assyrian leaders, and how Holofernes had bragged of what he would do to the House ofIsrael.
18 Allora il popolo si prostrò per adorare Dio ed elevarono delle suppliche dicendo:	18 At this the people fel to the ground and worshipped God.
19 "Signore, Dio del cielo, guarda il loro smisurato orgoglio e abbi pietà dell'umiliazione della nostra stirpe; in questo giorno volgi uno sguardo benigno verso coloro che ti sono consacrati".	19 'Lord God of heaven,' they cried, 'take notice of their arrogance and have pity on the humiliation of ourrace. Look kindly today on those who are consecrated to you.'
20 Poi rincuorarono Achior e gli espressero la loro profonda compiacenza.	20 They then spoke reassuringly to Achior and praised him warmly.
21 Dopo l'adunanza Ozia lo accolse nella sua casa e offrì un banchetto agli anziani. Per tutta quella notte invocarono il soccorso del Dio d'Israele.	21 After the assembly Uzziah took him home and gave a banquet for the elders; al that night they cal edon the God of Israel for help.
