1 In quel tempo, Giuda si separò dai suoi fratelli e rizzò la sua tenda presso un uomo di Adullam, di nome Chira.	1 About the same time, Judah, descending from his brothers, turned toward an Adullamite man, named Hirah.
2 Qui Giuda vide la figlia di un uomo Cananeo, il quale si chiamava Sua; se la prese in moglie e si unì a lei.	2 And he saw there the daughter of a man called Shua, of Canaan. And taking her as a wife, he entered to her.
3 Essa concepì e partorì un figlio, che egli chiamò Er.	3 And she conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Er.
4 Poi concepì ancora e partorì un figlio, che chiamò Onan.	4 And conceiving offspring again, having given birth to a son, she called him Onan.
5 Ancora un'altra volta partorì un figlio, che chiamò Sela. Essa si trovava in Chezib, quando lo partorì.	5 Likewise, she bore a third, whom she called Shelah, after whose birth, she ceased to bear any more.
6 Giuda prese una moglie per il suo primogenito Er, la quale si chiamava Tamar.	6 Then Judah gave a wife to his first born Er, whose name was Tamar.
7 Ma Er, il primogenito di Giuda, era perverso agli occhi del Signore, e il Signore lo fece morire.	7 And it also happened that Er, the first born of Judah, was wicked in the sight of the Lord and was killed by him.
8 Allora Giuda disse a Onan: "Accostati alla moglie di tuo fratello, fa' il dovere di cognato nei suoi riguardi e fa' sussistere così una posterità per tuo fratello".	8 Therefore, Judah said to his son Onan: “Enter to the wife of your brother, and associate with her, so that you may raise offspring to your brother.”
9 Ma Onan, sapendo che la prole non sarebbe stata sua, ogni volta che si univa alla moglie di suo fratello, disperdeva per terra, per non dare una posterità a suo fratello.	9 He, knowing that the sons to be born would not be his, when he entered to the wife of his brother, he spilled his seed on the ground, lest children should be born in his brother’s name.
10 Ciò ch'egli faceva dispiacque agli occhi del Signore, che fece morire anche lui.	10 And for this reason, the Lord struck him down, because he did a detestable thing.
11 Allora Giuda disse alla nuora Tamar: "Ritorna a casa di tuo padre come vedova, fin quando mio figlio Sela diverrà grande". Perché temeva che anche questi morisse come gli altri fratelli! Così Tamar se ne andò e ritornò alla casa di suo padre.	11 Because of this matter, Judah said to his daughter-in-law Tamar, “Be a widow in your father’s house, until my son Shelah grows up.” For he was afraid, lest he also might die, just as his brothers did. She went away, and she lived in her father’s house.
12 Passarono molti giorni e morì la figlia di Sua, la moglie di Giuda. Quando Giuda ebbe finito il lutto, salì da quelli che tosavano il suo gregge a Timna, e con lui vi era Chira, il suo amico di Adullam.	12 Then, after many days had passed, the daughter of Shua, the wife of Judah, died. And when he accepted consolation after his mourning, he went up to the shearers of his sheep at Timnah, he and Hirah, the herdsman of the Adullamite flock.
13 Ne fu informata Tamar con questi termini: "Ecco che il tuo suocero sale a Timna per la tosatura del suo gregge".	13 And it was reported to Tamar that her father-in-law had gone up to Timnah to shear the sheep.
14 Allora Tamar svestì i suoi abiti vedovili, si coprì con un velo, si profumò, poi si pose seduta alla porta di Enaim, che è sulla strada verso Timna. Aveva visto infatti che Sela era ormai diventato adulto, ma lei non gli era stata data in moglie.	14 And storing away the garments of her widowhood, she took up a veil. And changing her clothing, she sat at the crossroad that leads to Timnah, because Shelah had grown up, and she had not received him as a husband.
15 Giuda la vide e la credette una meretrice, perché essa si era coperta la faccia.	15 And when Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot. For she had covered her face, lest she be recognized.
16 Egli deviò il cammino verso di lei e disse: "Suvvia, permetti che io mi accosti a te!". Non sapeva infatti che quella fosse la sua nuora. Essa disse: "Che cosa mi darai per accostarti a me?".	16 And entering to her, he said, “Permit me to join with you.” For he did not know her to be his daughter-in-law. And she responded, “What will you give to me, to enjoy me as a concubine?”
17 Rispose: "Io ti manderò un capretto del gregge". Essa riprese: "Se tu mi dai un pegno fin quando me lo manderai...".	17 He said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” And again, she said, “I will allow what you want, if you give me a pledge, until you may send what you promise.”
18 Egli disse: "Qual è il pegno che ti devo dare?". Rispose: "Il tuo sigillo, il tuo cordone e il bastone che hai in mano". Giuda glieli diede, le si accostò, ed essa concepì da lui.	18 Judah said, “What do you want to be given for a pledge?” She responded, “Your ring and bracelet, and the staff that you hold in your hand.” Thereupon, the woman, from one sexual encounter, conceived.
19 Poi essa si levò e se ne andò; si tolse di dosso il velo e si rivestì dei suoi abiti vedovili.	19 And she arose and went away. And storing away the garments that she had taken up, she was clothed in the garments of her widowhood.
20 Giuda poi mandò il capretto per mezzo del suo amico di Adullam, per riprendere il pegno dalle mani di quella donna, ma quello non la trovò.	20 Then Judah sent a young goat by his shepherd, the Adullamite, so that he might receive the pledge that he had given to the woman. But, when he had not found her,
21 Domandò agli uomini di quel luogo: "Dov'è quella prostituta che stava in Enaim sulla strada?". Essi risposero: "Non c'è stata qui nessuna prostituta".	21 he questioned the men of that place: “Where is the woman who sat at the crossroad?” And they all responded, “There has been no harlot in this place.”
22 Così tornò da Giuda e disse: "Non l'ho trovata, e anche gli uomini del luogo dicevano: "Non c'è stata qui nessuna prostituta".	22 He returned to Judah, and he said to him: “I did not find her. Moreover, the men of that place told me that a prostitute had never sat there.”
23 Allora Giuda disse: "Si tenga per sé il pegno e noi non si sia nel disprezzo. Vedi bene che le ho mandato questo capretto, ma tu non l'hai trovata".	23 Judah said: “Let her hold herself to blame. Certainly, she is not able to accuse us of a lie. I sent the young goat that I had promised, and you did not find her.”
24 Or avvenne, circa tre mesi dopo, che fu portata a Giuda una notizia in questi termini: "Si è prostituita tua nuora Tamar, ed anzi è incinta in conseguenza della sua prostituzione". Giuda rispose: "Conducetela fuori e sia bruciata!".	24 And behold, after three months, they reported to Judah, saying, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, has committed fornication and her abdomen appears to be enlarged.” And Judah said, “Produce her, so that she may be burned.”
25 Mentre la si faceva uscire, essa mandò a dire al suocero: "L'uomo, a cui appartengono questi oggetti, mi ha reso incinta". E aggiunse: "Riscontra, di grazia, di chi siano questo sigillo, questi cordoni e questo bastone".	25 But when she was led out to the punishment, she sent to her father-in-law, saying: “I conceived by the man to whom these things belong. Recognize whose ring, and bracelet, and staff this is.”
26 Allora Giuda li riconobbe e disse: "Essa è più giusta di me. Infatti è perché io non l'ho data al mio figlio Sela". E non ebbe più rapporti con lei.	26 But he, acknowledging the gifts, said: “She is more just than I am. For I did not deliver her to my son Shelah.” However, he knew her no more.
27 Quando essa fu giunta al momento di partorire, ecco che aveva nel ventre due gemelli.	27 Then, at the moment of birth, there appeared twins in the womb. And so, in the very delivery of the infants, one put forth a hand, on which the midwife tied a scarlet thread, saying,
28 Durante il parto uno di loro mise fuori una mano e la levatrice prese un filo scarlatto e lo legò attorno a quella mano, dicendo: "E' questo che è uscito per primo".	28 “This one will go out first.”
29 Ma quando questo ritirò la sua mano, ecco che uscì suo fratello. Allora essa disse: "Come ti sei aperta una breccia?" e lo si chiamò Perez.	29 But in truth, drawing back his hand, the other came out. And the woman said, “Why is the partition divided for you?” And for this reason, she called his name Perez.
30 Poi uscì suo fratello, che aveva il filo scarlatto attorno alla mano e lo si chiamò Zerach.	30 After this, his brother came out, on whose hand was the scarlet thread. And she called him Zerah.
