1 Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, in accord with the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus,	1 Paolo, apostolo di Gesù Cristo per volontà di Dio, secondo la promessa della vita che è in Cristo Gesù,
2 to Timothy, most beloved son. Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.	2 al carissimo figliolo Timoteo grazia e misericordia e pace da Dio Padre, e da Cristo Gesù Signore nostro.
3 I give thanks to God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a pure conscience. For without ceasing I hold the remembrance of you in my prayers, night and day,	3 Rendo grazie a Dio, al quale coi miei antenati servo con pura coscienza, perchè notte e giorno, continuamente, fo menzione di te nelle mie preghiere,
4 desiring to see you, recalling your tears so as to be filled with joy,	4 e, ricordando le tue lacrime, mi struggo di vederti, per esser ricolmato di gioia,
5 calling to mind the same faith, which is in you unfeigned, which also first dwelt in your grandmother, Lois, and in your mother, Eunice, and also, I am certain, in you.	5 memore di quella tua fede sincera che animò la tua nonna Loide e la tua madre Eunice e, ne son certo, anima anche te.
6 Because of this, I admonish you to revive the grace of God, which is in you by the imposition of my hands.	6 Per questa ragione ti raccomando di ravvivare la grazia di Dio che è in te per l'imposizione delle mie mani;
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of virtue, and of love, and of self-restraint.	7 perchè Dio non ci ha dato uno spirito di timidità, ma di fortezza, d'amore, di saggezza.
8 And so, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me, his prisoner. Instead, collaborate with the Gospel in accord with the virtue of God,	8 Non ti vergognare adunque di rendere testimonianza a nostro Signore, nè di me prigioniero per lui, ma soffri anche tu pel Vangelo, sorretto dalla virtù di Dio,
9 who has freed us and has called us to his holy vocation, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus, before the ages of time.	9 che ci ha liberati e ci ha chiamati colla sua santa vocazione, non già per le opere nostre, ma secondo il suo disegno e per la grazia a noi concessa in Cristo Gesù, prima che cominciassero i secoli;
10 And this has now been made manifest by the illumination of our Savior Jesus Christ, who certainly has destroyed death, and who has also illuminated life and incorruption through the Gospel.	10 ma che si è manifestata ora per l'apparizione del Salvatore nostro Gesù Cristo, il quale, distrutta la morte, ha rivelata la vita e l'immortalità mediante il Vangelo,
11 Of this Gospel, I have been appointed a preacher, and an Apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.	11 del quale io sono stato costituito predicatore e Apostolo e dottore delle Genti.
12 For this reason, I also suffer these things. But I am not confounded. For I know in whom I have believed, and I am certain that he has the power to preserve what was entrusted to me, unto that day.	12 Ecco la causa per cui soffro queste pene; ma non ne arrossisco, perchè so bene in chi ho posto la mia fiducia e son certo che Egli è sì potente da conservare il mio deposito fino a quel giorno.
13 Hold to the kind of sound words that you have heard from me in the faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.	13 La norma delle sane istruzioni che da me hai ricevute, conservala nella fede e nella carità che è in Cristo Gesù.
14 Guard the good entrusted to you through the Holy Spirit, who lives within us.	14 Il buon deposito custodiscilo per mezzo dello Spirito Santo, che abita in noi.
15 Know this: that all those who are in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phigellus and Hermogenes.	15 Tu sai come si sono da me alienati tutti quelli dell'Asia, tra i quali Figello ed Ermogene.
16 May the Lord have mercy on the house of Onesiphorus, because he has often refreshed me, and he has not been ashamed of my chains.	16 Usi il Signore misericordia alla famiglia di Onesiforo, il quale mi ha spesso consolato, e non s'è vergognato della mia catena,
17 Instead, when he had arrived in Rome, he anxiously sought me and found me.	17 anzi, appena arrivato a Roma, s'è messo con gran premura a cercarmi, e mi ha trovato.
18 May the Lord grant to him to obtain mercy from the Lord in that day. And you know well in how many ways he has ministered to me at Ephesus.	18 Gli conceda il Signore di trovar misericordia davanti al Signore in quel giorno. Quanti servigi mi abbia resi ad Efeso lo sai meglio di me.
