1 Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, in accord with the promise of the life which is in Christ Jesus,	1 Paulus, durch den Willen Gottes zum Apostel Christi Jesu berufen, um das Leben in Christus Jesus, das uns verheißen ist, zu verkündigen,
2 to Timothy, most beloved son. Grace, mercy, peace, from God the Father and from Christ Jesus our Lord.	2 an Timotheus, seinen geliebten Sohn: Gnade, Erbarmen und Friede von Gott, dem Vater, und Christus Jesus, unserem Herrn.
3 I give thanks to God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a pure conscience. For without ceasing I hold the remembrance of you in my prayers, night and day,	3 Ich danke Gott, dem ich wie schon meine Vorfahren mit reinem Gewissen diene - ich danke ihm bei Tag und Nacht in meinen Gebeten, in denen ich unablässig an dich denke.
4 desiring to see you, recalling your tears so as to be filled with joy,	4 Wenn ich mich an deine Tränen erinnere, habe ich Sehnsucht, dich zu sehen, um mich wieder von Herzen freuen zu können;
5 calling to mind the same faith, which is in you unfeigned, which also first dwelt in your grandmother, Lois, and in your mother, Eunice, and also, I am certain, in you.	5 denn ich denke an deinen aufrichtigen Glauben, der schon in deiner Großmutter Loïs und in deiner Mutter Eunike lebendig war und der nun, wie ich weiß, auch in dir lebt.
6 Because of this, I admonish you to revive the grace of God, which is in you by the imposition of my hands.	6 Darum rufe ich dir ins Gedächtnis: Entfache die Gnade Gottes wieder, die dir durch die Auflegung meiner Hände zuteil geworden ist.
7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of virtue, and of love, and of self-restraint.	7 Denn Gott hat uns nicht einen Geist der Verzagtheit gegeben, sondern den Geist der Kraft, der Liebe und der Besonnenheit.
8 And so, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me, his prisoner. Instead, collaborate with the Gospel in accord with the virtue of God,	8 Schäme dich also nicht, dich zu unserem Herrn zu bekennen; schäme dich auch meiner nicht, der ich seinetwegen im Gefängnis bin, sondern leide mit mir für das Evangelium. Gott gibt dazu die Kraft:
9 who has freed us and has called us to his holy vocation, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus, before the ages of time.	9 Er hat uns gerettet; mit einem heiligen Ruf hat er uns gerufen, nicht aufgrund unserer Werke, sondern aus eigenem Entschluss und aus Gnade, die uns schon vor ewigen Zeiten in Christus Jesus geschenkt wurde;
10 And this has now been made manifest by the illumination of our Savior Jesus Christ, who certainly has destroyed death, and who has also illuminated life and incorruption through the Gospel.	10 jetzt aber wurde sie durch das Erscheinen unseres Retters Christus Jesus offenbart. Er hat dem Tod die Macht genommen und uns das Licht des unvergänglichen Lebens gebracht durch das Evangelium,
11 Of this Gospel, I have been appointed a preacher, and an Apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles.	11 als dessen Verkünder, Apostel und Lehrer ich eingesetzt bin.
12 For this reason, I also suffer these things. But I am not confounded. For I know in whom I have believed, and I am certain that he has the power to preserve what was entrusted to me, unto that day.	12 Darum muss ich auch dies alles erdulden; aber ich schäme mich nicht, denn ich weiß, wem ich Glauben geschenkt habe, und ich bin überzeugt, dass er die Macht hat, das mir anvertraute Gut bis zu jenem Tag zu bewahren.
13 Hold to the kind of sound words that you have heard from me in the faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.	13 Halte dich an die gesunde Lehre, die du von mir gehört hast; nimm sie dir zum Vorbild und bleibe beim Glauben und bei der Liebe, die uns in Christus Jesus geschenkt ist.
14 Guard the good entrusted to you through the Holy Spirit, who lives within us.	14 Bewahre das dir anvertraute kostbare Gut durch die Kraft des Heiligen Geistes, der in uns wohnt.
15 Know this: that all those who are in Asia have turned away from me, among whom are Phigellus and Hermogenes.	15 Du weißt, dass sich alle in der Provinz Asien von mir abgewandt haben, auch Phygelus und Hermogenes.
16 May the Lord have mercy on the house of Onesiphorus, because he has often refreshed me, and he has not been ashamed of my chains.	16 Der Familie des Onesiphorus schenke der Herr sein Erbarmen, denn Onesiphorus hat mich oft getröstet und hat sich meiner Ketten nicht geschämt;
17 Instead, when he had arrived in Rome, he anxiously sought me and found me.	17 als er nach Rom kam, suchte er unermüdlich nach mir, bis er mich fand.
18 May the Lord grant to him to obtain mercy from the Lord in that day. And you know well in how many ways he has ministered to me at Ephesus.	18 Der Herr gebe ihm, dass er beim Herrn Erbarmen findet an jenem Tag. Seine treuen Dienste in Ephesus kennst du selbst am besten.
