1 And Jesus, while passing by, saw a man blind from birth.	1 Passando, vide un uomo cieco dalla nascita
2 And his disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?”	2 e i suoi discepoli lo interrogarono: «Rabbì, chi ha peccato, lui o i suoi genitori, perché sia nato cieco?».
3 Jesus responded: “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but it was so that the works of God would be made manifest in him.	3 Rispose Gesù: «Né lui ha peccato né i suoi genitori, ma è perché in lui siano manifestate le opere di Dio.
4 I must work the works of him who sent me, while it is day: the night is coming, when no one is able to work.	4 Bisogna che noi compiamo le opere di colui che mi ha mandato finché è giorno; poi viene la notte, quando nessuno può agire.
5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”	5 Finché io sono nel mondo, sono la luce del mondo».
6 When he had said these things, he spat on the ground, and he made clay from the spittle, and he smeared the clay over his eyes.	6 Detto questo, sputò per terra, fece del fango con la saliva, spalmò il fango sugli occhi del cieco
7 And he said to him: “Go, wash in the pool of Siloam” (which is translated as: one who has been sent). Therefore, he went away and washed, and he returned, seeing.	7 e gli disse: «Va’ a lavarti nella piscina di Sìloe» – che significa Inviato. Quegli andò, si lavò e tornò che ci vedeva.
8 And so the bystanders and those who had seen him before, when he was a beggar, said, “Is this not the one who was sitting and begging?” Some said, “This is he.”	8 Allora i vicini e quelli che lo avevano visto prima, perché era un mendicante, dicevano: «Non è lui quello che stava seduto a chiedere l’elemosina?».
9 But others said, “Certainly not, but he is similar to him.” Yet truly, he himself said, “I am he.”	9 Alcuni dicevano: «È lui»; altri dicevano: «No, ma è uno che gli assomiglia». Ed egli diceva: «Sono io!».
10 Therefore, they said to him, “How were your eyes opened?”	10 Allora gli domandarono: «In che modo ti sono stati aperti gli occhi?».
11 He responded: “That man who is called Jesus made clay, and he anointed my eyes and said to me, ‘Go to the pool of Siloam and wash.’ And I went, and I washed, and I see.”	11 Egli rispose: «L’uomo che si chiama Gesù ha fatto del fango, mi ha spalmato gli occhi e mi ha detto: “Va’ a Sìloe e làvati!”. Io sono andato, mi sono lavato e ho acquistato la vista».
12 And they said to him, “Where is he?” He said, “I do not know.”	12 Gli dissero: «Dov’è costui?». Rispose: «Non lo so».
13 They brought the one who had been blind to the Pharisees.	13 Condussero dai farisei quello che era stato cieco:
14 Now it was the Sabbath, when Jesus made the clay and opened his eyes.	14 era un sabato, il giorno in cui Gesù aveva fatto del fango e gli aveva aperto gli occhi.
15 Therefore, again the Pharisees questioned him as to how he had seen. And he said to them, “He placed clay over my eyes, and I washed, and I see.”	15 Anche i farisei dunque gli chiesero di nuovo come aveva acquistato la vista. Ed egli disse loro: «Mi ha messo del fango sugli occhi, mi sono lavato e ci vedo».
16 And so certain Pharisees said: “This man, who does not keep the Sabbath, is not from God.” But others said, “How could a sinful man accomplish these signs?” And there was a schism among them.	16 Allora alcuni dei farisei dicevano: «Quest’uomo non viene da Dio, perché non osserva il sabato». Altri invece dicevano: «Come può un peccatore compiere segni di questo genere?». E c’era dissenso tra loro.
17 Therefore, they spoke again to the blind man, “What do you say about him who opened your eyes?” Then he said, “He is a Prophet.”	17 Allora dissero di nuovo al cieco: «Tu, che cosa dici di lui, dal momento che ti ha aperto gli occhi?». Egli rispose: «È un profeta!».
18 Therefore, the Jews did not believe, about him, that he had been blind and had seen, until they called the parents of him who had seen.	18 Ma i Giudei non credettero di lui che fosse stato cieco e che avesse acquistato la vista, finché non chiamarono i genitori di colui che aveva ricuperato la vista.
19 And they questioned them, saying: “Is this your son, whom you say was born blind? Then how is it that he now sees?”	19 E li interrogarono: «È questo il vostro figlio, che voi dite essere nato cieco? Come mai ora ci vede?».
20 His parents responded to them and said: “We know that this is our son and that he was born blind.	20 I genitori di lui risposero: «Sappiamo che questo è nostro figlio e che è nato cieco;
21 But how it is that he now sees, we do not know. And who opened his eyes, we do not know. Ask him. He is old enough. Let him speak for himself.”	21 ma come ora ci veda non lo sappiamo, e chi gli abbia aperto gli occhi, noi non lo sappiamo. Chiedetelo a lui: ha l’età, parlerà lui di sé».
22 His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jews. For the Jews had already conspired, so that if anyone were to confess him to be the Christ, he would be expelled from the synagogue.	22 Questo dissero i suoi genitori, perché avevano paura dei Giudei; infatti i Giudei avevano già stabilito che, se uno lo avesse riconosciuto come il Cristo, venisse espulso dalla sinagoga.
23 It was for this reason that his parents said: “He is old enough. Ask him.”	23 Per questo i suoi genitori dissero: «Ha l’età: chiedetelo a lui!».
24 Therefore, they again called the man who had been blind, and they said to him: “Give glory to God. We know that this man is a sinner.”	24 Allora chiamarono di nuovo l’uomo che era stato cieco e gli dissero: «Da’ gloria a Dio! Noi sappiamo che quest’uomo è un peccatore».
25 And so he said to them: “If he is a sinner, I do not know it. One thing I do know, that although I was blind, now I see.”	25 Quello rispose: «Se sia un peccatore, non lo so. Una cosa io so: ero cieco e ora ci vedo».
26 Then they said to him: “What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?”	26 Allora gli dissero: «Che cosa ti ha fatto? Come ti ha aperto gli occhi?».
27 He answered them: “I have already told you, and you heard it. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you also want to become his disciples?”	27 Rispose loro: «Ve l’ho già detto e non avete ascoltato; perché volete udirlo di nuovo? Volete forse diventare anche voi suoi discepoli?».
28 Therefore, they cursed him and said: “You be his disciple. But we are disciples of Moses.	28 Lo insultarono e dissero: «Suo discepolo sei tu! Noi siamo discepoli di Mosè!
29 We know that God spoke to Moses. But this man, we do not know where he is from.”	29 Noi sappiamo che a Mosè ha parlato Dio; ma costui non sappiamo di dove sia».
30 The man responded and said to them: “Now in this is a wonder: that you do not know where he is from, and yet he has opened my eyes.	30 Rispose loro quell’uomo: «Proprio questo stupisce: che voi non sapete di dove sia, eppure mi ha aperto gli occhi.
31 And we know that God does not hear sinners. But if anyone is a worshipper of God and does his will, then he heeds him.	31 Sappiamo che Dio non ascolta i peccatori, ma che, se uno onora Dio e fa la sua volontà, egli lo ascolta.
32 From ancient times, it has not been heard that anyone has opened the eyes of someone born blind.	32 Da che mondo è mondo, non si è mai sentito dire che uno abbia aperto gli occhi a un cieco nato.
33 Unless this man were of God, he would not be able to do any such thing.”	33 Se costui non venisse da Dio, non avrebbe potuto far nulla».
34 They responded and said to him, “You were born entirely in sins, and you would teach us?” And they cast him out.	34 Gli replicarono: «Sei nato tutto nei peccati e insegni a noi?». E lo cacciarono fuori.
35 Jesus heard that they had cast him out. And when he had found him, he said to him, “Do you believe in the Son of God?”	35 Gesù seppe che l’avevano cacciato fuori; quando lo trovò, gli disse: «Tu, credi nel Figlio dell’uomo?».
36 He responded and said, “Who is he, Lord, so that I may believe in him?”	36 Egli rispose: «E chi è, Signore, perché io creda in lui?».
37 And Jesus said to him, “You have both seen him, and he is the one who is speaking with you.”	37 Gli disse Gesù: «Lo hai visto: è colui che parla con te».
38 And he said, “I believe, Lord.” And falling prostrate, he worshipped him.	38 Ed egli disse: «Credo, Signore!». E si prostrò dinanzi a lui.
39 And Jesus said, “I came into this world in judgment, so that those who do not see, may see; and so that those who see, may become blind.”	39 Gesù allora disse: «È per un giudizio che io sono venuto in questo mondo, perché coloro che non vedono, vedano e quelli che vedono, diventino ciechi».
40 And certain Pharisees, who were with him, heard this, and they said to him, “Are we also blind?”	40 Alcuni dei farisei che erano con lui udirono queste parole e gli dissero: «Siamo ciechi anche noi?».
41 Jesus said to them: “If you were blind, you would not have sin. Yet now you say, ‘We see.’ So your sin persists.”	41 Gesù rispose loro: «Se foste ciechi, non avreste alcun peccato; ma siccome dite: “Noi vediamo”, il vostro peccato rimane».
