And it happened that, when Jesus entered the house of a certain leader of the Pharisees on the Sabbath to eat bread, they were observing him.1 Y sucedió que, habiendo ido en sábado a casa de uno de los jefes de los fariseos para comer, ellos le estaban observando.
And behold, a certain man before him was afflicted with edema.2 Había allí, delante de él, un hombre hidrópico.
And responding, Jesus spoke to the experts in the law and to the Pharisees, saying, “Is it lawful to cure on the Sabbath?”3 Entonces preguntó Jesús a los legistas y a los fariseos: «¿Es lícito curar en sábado, o no?»
But they kept silent. Yet truly, taking hold of him, he healed him and sent him away.4 Pero ellos se callaron. Entonces le tomó, le curó, y le despidió.
And responding to them, he said, “Which of you will have a donkey or an ox fall into a pit, and will not promptly pull him out, on the day of the Sabbath?”5 Y a ellos les dijo: «¿A quién de vosotros se le cae un hijo o un buey a un pozo en día de sábado y no lo saca al momento?»
And they were unable to respond to him about these things.6 Y no pudieron replicar a esto.
Then he also told a parable, to those who were invited, noticing how they chose the first seats at the table, saying to them:7 Notando cómo los invitados elegían los primeros puestos, les dijo una parábola:
“When you are invited to a wedding, do not sit down in the first place, lest perhaps someone more honored than yourself may have been invited by him.8 «Cuando seas convidado por alguien a una boda, no te pongas en el primer puesto, no sea que haya sido convidado por él otro más distinguido que tú,
And then he who called both you and him, approaching, may say to you, ‘Give this place to him.’ And then you would begin, with shame, to take the last place.9 y viniendo el que os convidó a ti y a él, te diga: “Deja el sitio a éste”, y entonces vayas a ocupar avergonzado el último puesto.
But when you are invited, go, sit down in the lowest place, so that, when he who invited you arrives, he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the sight of those who sit at table together with you.10 Al contrario, cuando seas convidado, vete a sentarte en el último puesto, de manera que, cuando venga el que te convidó, te diga: “Amigo, sube más arriba.” Y esto será un honor para ti delante de todos los que estén contigo a la mesa.
For everyone who exalts himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted.”11 Porque todo el que se ensalce, será humillado; y el que se humille, será ensalzado».
Then he also said to the one who had invited him: “When you prepare a lunch or dinner, do not choose to call your friends, or your brothers, or your relatives, or your wealthy neighbors, lest perhaps they might then invite you in return and repayment would made to you.12 Dijo también al que le había invitado: «Cuando des una comida o una cena, no llames a tus amigos, ni a tus hermanos, ni a tus parientes, ni a tus vecinos ricos; no sea que ellos te inviten a su vez, y tengas ya tu recompensa.
But when you prepare a feast, call the poor, the disabled, the lame, and the blind.13 Cuando des un banquete, llama a los pobres, a los lisiados, a los cojos, a los ciegos;
And you will be blessed because they do not have a way to repay you. So then, your recompense will be in the resurrection of the just.”14 y serás dichoso, porque no te pueden corresponder, pues se te recompensará en la resurrección de los justos».
When someone sitting at table with him had heard these things, he said to him, “Blessed is he who will eat bread in the kingdom of God.”15 Habiendo oído esto, uno de los comensales le dijo: «¡Dichoso el que pueda comer en el Reino de Dios!»
So he said to him: “A certain man prepared a great feast, and he invited many.16 El le respondió: «Un hombre dio una gran cena y convidó a muchos;
And he sent his servant, at the hour of the feast, to tell the invited to come; for now everything was ready.17 a la hora de la cena envió a su siervo a decir a los invitados: “Venid, que ya está todo preparado.”
And at once they all began to make excuses. The first said to him: ‘I bought a farm, and I need to go out and see it. I ask you to excuse me.’18 Pero todos a una empezaron a excusarse. El primero le dijo: “He comprado un campo y tengo que ir a verlo; te ruego me dispenses.”
And another said: ‘I bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to examine them. I ask you to excuse me.’19 Y otro dijo: “He comprado cinco yuntas de bueyes y voy a probarlas; te ruego me dispenses.”
And another said, ‘I have taken a wife, and therefore I am not able to go.’20 Otro dijo: “Me he casado, y por eso no puedo ir.”
And returning, the servant reported these things to his lord. Then the father of the family, becoming angry, said to his servant: ‘Go out quickly into the streets and neighborhoods of the city. And lead here the poor, and the disabled, and the blind, and the lame.’21 «Regresó el siervo y se lo contó a su señor. Entonces, airado el dueño de la casa, dijo a su siervo: “Sal en seguida a las plazas y calles de la ciudad, y haz entrar aquí a los pobres y lisiados, y ciegos y cojos.”
And the servant said: ‘It has been done, just as you ordered, lord, and there is still room.’22 Dijo el siervo: “Señor, se ha hecho lo que mandaste, y todavía hay sitio.”
And the lord said to the servant: ‘Go out to the highways and hedges, and compel them to enter, so that my house may be filled.23 Dijo el señor al siervo: “Sal a los caminos y cercas, y obliga a entrar hasta que se llene mi casa.”
For I tell you, that none of those men who were invited will taste of my feast.’ ”24 Porque os digo que ninguno de aquellos invitados probará mi cena».
Now great crowds traveled with him. And turning around, he said to them:25 Caminaba con él mucha gente, y volviéndose les dijo:
“If anyone comes to me, and does not hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, and yes, even his own life, he is not able to be my disciple.26 «Si alguno viene donde mí y no odia a su padre, a su madre, a su mujer, a sus hijos, a sus hermanos, a sus hermanas y hasta su propia vida, no puede ser discípulo mío.
And whoever does not bear his cross and come after me, is not able to be my disciple.27 El que no lleve su cruz y venga en pos de mí, no puede ser discípulo mío.
For who among you, wanting to build a tower, would not first sit down and determine the costs that are required, to see if he has the means to complete it?28 «Porque ¿quién de vosotros, que quiere edificar una torre, no se sienta primero a calcular los gastos, y ver si tiene para acabarla?
Otherwise, after he will have laid the foundation and not been able to finish it, everyone who sees it may begin to mock him,29 No sea que, habiendo puesto los cimientos y no pudiendo terminar, todos los que lo vean se pongan a burlarse de él, diciendo:
saying: ‘This man began to build what he was not able to finish.’30 “Este comenzó a edificar y no pudo terminar.”
Or, what king, advancing to engage in war against another king, would not first sit down and consider whether he may be able, with ten thousand, to meet one who comes against him with twenty thousand?31 O ¿qué rey, que sale a enfrentarse contra otro rey, no se sienta antes y delibera si con 10.000 puede salir al paso del que viene contra él con 20.000?
If not, then while the other is still far away, sending a delegation, he would ask him for terms of peace.32 Y si no, cuando está todavía lejos, envía una embajada para pedir condiciones de paz.
Therefore, everyone of you who does not renounce all that he possesses is not able to be my disciple.33 Pues, de igual manera, cualquiera de vosotros que no renuncie a todos sus bienes, no puede ser discípulo mío.
Salt is good. But if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be seasoned?34 «Buena es la sal; mas si también la sal se desvirtúa, ¿con qué se la sazonará?
It is useful neither in soil, nor in manure, so instead, it shall be thrown away. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.”35 No es útil ni para la tierra ni para el estercolero; la tiran afuera. El que tenga oídos para oír, que oiga».
