CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINLXX
A good name is better than many riches. And good esteem is above silver and gold.1 αιρετωτερον ονομα καλον η πλουτος πολυς υπερ δε αργυριον και χρυσιον χαρις αγαθη
The rich and poor have met one another. The Lord is the maker of them both.2 πλουσιος και πτωχος συνηντησαν αλληλοις αμφοτερους δε ο κυριος εποιησεν
The clever saw evil and hid himself. The innocent continued on and was afflicted with damage.3 πανουργος ιδων πονηρον τιμωρουμενον κραταιως αυτος παιδευεται οι δε αφρονες παρελθοντες εζημιωθησαν
The end of moderation is the fear of the Lord, riches and glory and life.4 γενεα σοφιας φοβος κυριου και πλουτος και δοξα και ζωη
Weapons and swords are on the way of the perverse. But he who guards his own soul withdraws far from them.5 τριβολοι και παγιδες εν οδοις σκολιαις ο δε φυλασσων την εαυτου ψυχην αφεξεται αυτων
The proverb is: A youth is close to his way; even when he is old, he will not withdraw from it.6 -
The rich rule over the poor. And the borrower is servant to the lender.7 πλουσιοι πτωχων αρξουσιν και οικεται ιδιοις δεσποταις δανιουσιν
Whoever sows iniquity will reap evils, and by the rod of his own wrath he will be consumed.8 ο σπειρων φαυλα θερισει κακα πληγην δε εργων αυτου συντελεσει [8α] ανδρα ιλαρον και δοτην ευλογει ο θεος ματαιοτητα δε εργων αυτου συντελεσει
Whoever is inclined to mercy shall be blessed, for from his bread he has given to the poor. Whoever gives gifts will acquire victory and honor. But he carries away the soul of the receiver.9 ο ελεων πτωχον αυτος διατραφησεται των γαρ εαυτου αρτων εδωκεν τω πτωχω [9α] νικην και τιμην περιποιειται ο δωρα δους την μεντοι ψυχην αφαιρειται των κεκτημενων
Cast out the one who ridicules, and conflict will go out with him, and accusations and insults will cease.10 εκβαλε εκ συνεδριου λοιμον και συνεξελευσεται αυτω νεικος οταν γαρ καθιση εν συνεδριω παντας ατιμαζει
Whoever loves cleanness of heart, because of the grace of his lips, will have the king as his friend.11 αγαπα κυριος οσιας καρδιας δεκτοι δε αυτω παντες αμωμοι χειλεσιν ποιμαινει βασιλευς
The eyes of the Lord watch over knowledge. And the words of the iniquitous are supplanted.12 οι δε οφθαλμοι κυριου διατηρουσιν αισθησιν φαυλιζει δε λογους παρανομος
The lazy one says: “There is a lion outside. I might be slain in the midst of the streets.”13 προφασιζεται και λεγει οκνηρος λεων εν ταις οδοις εν δε ταις πλατειαις φονευται
The mouth of a foreign woman is a deep pit; the Lord was angry with him who will fall into it.14 βοθρος βαθυς στομα παρανομου ο δε μισηθεις υπο κυριου εμπεσειται εις αυτον [14α] εισιν οδοι κακαι ενωπιον ανδρος και ουκ αγαπα του αποστρεψαι απ' αυτων αποστρεφειν δε δει απο οδου σκολιας και κακης
Foolishness has been bound to the heart of a child, and a rod of discipline shall cause it to flee.15 ανοια εξηπται καρδιας νεου ραβδος δε και παιδεια μακραν απ' αυτου
Whoever slanders the poor, so as to augment his own riches, will give it away to one who is richer, and will be in need.16 ο συκοφαντων πενητα πολλα ποιει τα εαυτου διδωσιν δε πλουσιω επ' ελασσονι
Incline your ear, and listen to the words of the wise. Then apply your heart to my doctrine.17 λογοις σοφων παραβαλλε σον ους και ακουε εμον λογον την δε σην καρδιαν επιστησον ινα γνως οτι καλοι εισιν
It shall be beautiful to you, if you preserve it in your inner self, and it shall overflow from your lips,18 και εαν εμβαλης αυτους εις την καρδιαν σου ευφρανουσιν σε αμα επι σοις χειλεσιν
so that your confidence may be in the Lord. Therefore, I also have revealed it to you this day.19 ινα σου γενηται επι κυριον η ελπις και γνωριση σοι την οδον αυτου
Behold, I have written it for you in three ways, and with meditations and knowledge,20 και συ δε απογραψαι αυτα σεαυτω τρισσως εις βουλην και γνωσιν επι το πλατος της καρδιας σου
so that I might reveal to you, firmly and with words of truth, in order to respond about these things to those who sent you.21 διδασκω ουν σε αληθη λογον και γνωσιν αγαθην υπακουειν του αποκρινεσθαι λογους αληθειας τοις προβαλλομενοις σοι
Do not act with violence toward the pauper because he is poor. And do not weary the needy at the gate.22 μη αποβιαζου πενητα πτωχος γαρ εστιν και μη ατιμασης ασθενη εν πυλαις
For the Lord will judge his case, and he will pierce those who have pierced his soul.23 ο γαρ κυριος κρινει αυτου την κρισιν και ρυση σην ασυλον ψυχην
Do not be willing to be a friend to an angry man, and do not walk with a furious man,24 μη ισθι εταιρος ανδρι θυμωδει φιλω δε οργιλω μη συναυλιζου
lest perhaps you learn his ways, and take up a stumbling block to your soul.25 μηποτε μαθης των οδων αυτου και λαβης βροχους τη ση ψυχη
Do not be willing to be with those who certify with their hands, and who offer themselves as a guarantee against debts.26 μη διδου σεαυτον εις εγγυην αισχυνομενος προσωπον
For if you do not have the means to restore, what reason should there be for him to take the covering from your bed?27 εαν γαρ μη εχης ποθεν αποτεισης λημψονται το στρωμα το υπο τας πλευρας σου
Do not cross beyond the ancient limits that your fathers have set.28 μη μεταιρε ορια αιωνια α εθεντο οι πατερες σου
Have you seen a man swift in his work? He shall stand in the sight of kings, and not before those who are disreputable.29 ορατικον ανδρα και οξυν εν τοις εργοις αυτου βασιλευσι δει παρεσταναι και μη παρεσταναι ανδρασι νωθροις
