Proverbs 22

CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAIN	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 A good name is better than many riches. And good esteem is above silver and gold.	1 Mieux que de grandes richesses, un nom respecté; mieux que l’or et l’argent, être bien estimé!
2 The rich and poor have met one another. The Lord is the maker of them both.	2 Le riche et le pauvre ont ceci en commun: Yahvé les a faits l’un et l’autre.
3 The clever saw evil and hid himself. The innocent continued on and was afflicted with damage.	3 L’homme avisé voit venir le malheur et se met à l’abri; les niais vont de l’avant et ils le paient.
4 The end of moderation is the fear of the Lord, riches and glory and life.	4 La récompense de l’humilité, c’est la crainte de Yahvé, la richesse, l’honneur et la vie.
5 Weapons and swords are on the way of the perverse. But he who guards his own soul withdraws far from them.	5 Sur le chemin du pervers sont les épines et les pièges; qui s’en éloigne se met en sûreté.
6 The proverb is: A youth is close to his way; even when he is old, he will not withdraw from it.	6 Montre à l’enfant le chemin à suivre; même en vieillissant il s’y tiendra.
7 The rich rule over the poor. And the borrower is servant to the lender.	7 Le riche domine sur le pauvre, le débiteur est sous la coupe de son créancier.
8 Whoever sows iniquity will reap evils, and by the rod of his own wrath he will be consumed.	8 Qui sème l’injustice récolte le malheur, le pouvoir des violents sera brisé.
9 Whoever is inclined to mercy shall be blessed, for from his bread he has given to the poor. Whoever gives gifts will acquire victory and honor. But he carries away the soul of the receiver.	9 Qui regarde avec bienveillance sera béni: il a su partager son pain avec le pauvre.
10 Cast out the one who ridicules, and conflict will go out with him, and accusations and insults will cease.	10 Chasse le railleur et la dispute s’en ira; les querelles et les injures s’apaiseront.
11 Whoever loves cleanness of heart, because of the grace of his lips, will have the king as his friend.	11 Yahvé aime les cœurs droits, celui qui parle avec souci du bien, le roi le prendra pour ami.
12 The eyes of the Lord watch over knowledge. And the words of the iniquitous are supplanted.	12 Yahvé sait reconnaître le savoir, mais il démasque les discours pervers.
13 The lazy one says: “There is a lion outside. I might be slain in the midst of the streets.”	13 Le paresseux dit: “Il y a un lion dehors, si je sors je serai dévoré!”
14 The mouth of a foreign woman is a deep pit; the Lord was angry with him who will fall into it.	14 La bouche d’une adultère est une fosse profonde; il faut être abandonné de Yahvé pour y tomber.
15 Foolishness has been bound to the heart of a child, and a rod of discipline shall cause it to flee.	15 La sottise est ancrée au cœur de l’enfant; la discipline et les corrections l’en délivreront.
16 Whoever slanders the poor, so as to augment his own riches, will give it away to one who is richer, and will be in need.	16 Opprimez le pauvre, vous le faites progresser, donnez à un riche, vous lui faites du tort.
17 Incline your ear, and listen to the words of the wise. Then apply your heart to my doctrine.	17 Ouvre tes oreilles, écoute mes paroles, sois attentif à mes enseignements.
18 It shall be beautiful to you, if you preserve it in your inner self, and it shall overflow from your lips,	18 Garde-les, ils seront doux à tes entrailles, et tu les trouveras prêts sur tes lèvres.
19 so that your confidence may be in the Lord. Therefore, I also have revealed it to you this day.	19 Je veux que tu mettes ta confiance en Yahvé:
20 Behold, I have written it for you in three ways, and with meditations and knowledge,	20 voilà pourquoi je t’ai écrit ces 30 maximes, pour te conseiller et t’avertir,
21 so that I might reveal to you, firmly and with words of truth, in order to respond about these things to those who sent you.	21 pour que tu connaisses la vérité, et que tu puisses répondre avec sûreté à qui t’interrogera.
22 Do not act with violence toward the pauper because he is poor. And do not weary the needy at the gate.	22 Ne dépouille pas le pauvre parce qu’il est pauvre, et ne condamne pas le malheureux.
23 For the Lord will judge his case, and he will pierce those who have pierced his soul.	23 Car Yahvé prendra leur parti et se fera l’oppresseur de leurs oppresseurs.
24 Do not be willing to be a friend to an angry man, and do not walk with a furious man,	24 Ne te lie pas à un homme colérique, ne fréquente pas quelqu’un d’emporté:
25 lest perhaps you learn his ways, and take up a stumbling block to your soul.	25 tu pourrais prendre leurs manières, et tu y risquerais ta vie.
26 Do not be willing to be with those who certify with their hands, and who offer themselves as a guarantee against debts.	26 Ne sois pas de ceux qui s’engagent à la légère et qui donnent des garanties sur un prêt;
27 For if you do not have the means to restore, what reason should there be for him to take the covering from your bed?	27 si tu n’as pas de quoi rembourser, on te prendra ton lit en te laissant sur le sol.
28 Do not cross beyond the ancient limits that your fathers have set.	28 Laisse la borne que tes pères ont posée là où elle a toujours été.
29 Have you seen a man swift in his work? He shall stand in the sight of kings, and not before those who are disreputable.	29 Vois-tu un homme qui sait se démener? Il entrera au service des rois, il ne restera pas au service de gens obscurs.
