Nehemiah 2

1 Now it happened that, in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of king Artaxerxes, wine was before him; and I lifted up the wine, and I gave it to the king. And I was like someone languishing before his face.	1 Nel mese di Nisan, l'anno ventesimo del re Artaserse, essendo io incaricato del vino, presi il vino e lo porsi al re. Non ero mai stato triste in sua presenza.
2 And the king said to me: “Why is your expression sad, though you do not appear to be sick? This is not without cause, but some evil, I know not what, is in your heart.” And I was struck with an exceedingly great fear.	2 Mi disse il re: "Perché questo volto triste? Eppure non sei malato! Ciò non è altro che sofferenza del cuore". Allora fui preso da una grande paura
3 And I said to the king: “O king, live forever. Why should my expression not be mournful, since the city of the house of the sepulchers of my father is desolate, and its gates have been burned with fire?”	3 e dissi al re: "Viva il re in eterno! Come potrebbe non essere addolorato il mio volto, quando la città dove stanno i sepolcri dei miei padri è distrutta e le sue porte sono state divorate dal fuoco?".
4 And the king said to me: “What would you request?” And I prayed to the God of heaven.	4 Il re mi domandò: "Che cosa desideri?". Invocai allora il Dio del cielo
5 And I said to the king: “If it seems good to the king, and if your servant is pleasing before your face: that you would send me into Judea, to the city of the sepulcher of my father. And I will rebuild it.”	5 e risposi al re: "Se questo piace al re e se il tuo servo è gradito agli occhi tuoi, fammi andare in Giuda, alla città dei sepolcri dei miei padri, affinché io la riedifichi".
6 And the king said to me, with the queen who was sitting beside him: “Until what time will your journey be, and when will you return?” And it was pleasing before the countenance of the king, and so he sent me. And I established a time for him.	6 Il re mi domandò (e la regina stava assisa al suo fianco): "Quanto tempo durerà il tuo viaggio e quando ritornerai?". Parve bene al re di lasciarmi partire e io gli fissai una data.
7 And I said to the king: “If it seems good to the king, may he give me letters to the governors of the region beyond the river, so that they may lead me through, until I arrive in Judea,	7 Dissi ancora al re: "Se piace al re così, mi vengano date lettere per i governatori dell'Oltrefiume, affinché mi concedano il passaggio fino a che io arrivi in Giuda;
8 and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king’s forest, so that he may give me timber, in order that I may be able to cover the gates of the tower of the house, and the walls of the city, and the house that I will enter.” And the king granted to me in accord with the good hand of my God, who is with me.	8 e una lettera per Asaf, ispettore del parco reale, affinché mi dia legname per ricostruire le porte della cittadella del tempio, per le mura della città e per la casa in cui dovrò andare". Il re me lo concesse, perché la mano benevola del mio Dio era sopra di me.
9 And I went to the governors of the region beyond the river, and I gave them the letters of the king. Now the king had sent with me military leaders and horsemen.	9 Giunsi presso i governatori dell'Oltrefiume e diedi loro le lettere del re. Con me il re aveva inviato anche alcuni capi dell'esercito e un gruppo di cavalieri.
10 And Sanballat, a Horonite, and the servant Tobiah, an Ammonite, heard this. And they were saddened, with a great affliction, that a man had arrived who was seeking the prosperity of the sons of Israel.	10 Quando però Sanballàt, coronita, e Tobia, il servo ammonita, ne ebbero notizia, s'irritarono grandemente, perché era giunto un uomo che avrebbe ricercato il bene dei figli d'Israele.
11 And I arrived at Jerusalem, and I was there for three days.	11 Arrivai dunque a Gerusalemme e vi stetti tre giorni;
12 And I got up in the night, I and a few men with me. And I did not reveal to anyone what God had placed in my heart to do in Jerusalem. And there was no animal with me, except the animal on which I was sitting.	12 poi mi levai di notte, assieme a pochi uomini, senza aver manifestato a nessuno che cosa il mio Dio mi andava suggerendo di fare per Gerusalemme. Non avevo con me alcun giumento tranne quello che io cavalcavo.
13 And I departed in the night through the gate of the valley, and before the fountain of the dragon, and toward the dung gate. And I considered the wall of Jerusalem, which was broken apart, and its gates, which had been consumed by fire.	13 Uscii di nottetempo per la porta della Valle, verso la sorgente del Dragone e quindi verso la porta del Letame, ispezionando le mura di Gerusalemme diroccate e le porte divorate dal fuoco.
14 And I continued on to the gate of the fountain, and to the aqueduct of the king. And there was no room for the beast on which I was sitting to pass through.	14 Proseguii verso la porta della Sorgente e la piscina del re; ma non v'era posto per cui far passare il giumento su cui stavo.
15 And so I climbed up in the night along the torrent, and I considered the wall. And turning back, I went by the gate of the valley, and I returned.	15 Risalii allora per la Valle, sempre ispezionando le mura, di notte, e rientrando per la porta della Valle, rincasai.
16 Now the magistrates did not know where I had gone, or what I had done. For I had revealed nothing, even to that point in time, to the Jews, or to the priests, or to the nobles, or to the magistrates, or to the others who were doing the work.	16 I magistrati non avevano saputo dove io fossi andato né che cosa intendessi fare. Fino a quel momento non l'avevo infatti manifestato né ai Giudei né ai sacerdoti né ai notabili né ai magistrati né ad altri che avessero qualche carica.
17 And so I said to them: “You know the affliction in which we are, because Jerusalem is desolate, and its gates have been consumed by fire. Come, and let us rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, and let us no longer be in disgrace.”	17 Allora dissi loro: "Voi vedete la sciagura in cui ci troviamo. Gerusalemme è distrutta e le sue porte sono consunte dal fuoco. Venite, ricostruiamo le mura di Gerusalemme, e non saremo più oggetto di derisione!".
18 And I revealed to them how the hand of my God was with me for good, and the words of the king, which he had spoken to me. And I said: “Let us rise up, and build.” And their hands were strengthened for good.	18 Raccontai loro come la mano benevola del mio Dio era stata sopra di me e anche le parole che il re mi aveva dette. Allora essi esclamarono: "Su, mettiamoci a costruire!". Presero coraggio nel dar mano a quest'opera egregia.
19 But Sanballat, a Horonite, and the servant Tobiah, an Ammonite, and Geshem, an Arab, heard of it. And they ridiculed and disparaged us, and they said: “What is this thing that you are doing? Could you be rebelling against the king?”	19 Quando però lo vennero a sapere Sanballàt, coronita, e Tobia, il servo ammonita, e Ghesem, l'arabo, si fecero beffe di noi e dicevano dileggiandoci: "Che cosa andate facendo? Volete forse ribellarvi al re?".
20 And I replied to them a word, and I said to them: “The God of heaven himself is helping us, and we are his servants. Let us rise up and build. But there is no portion, or justice, or remembrance in Jerusalem for you.”	20 Ma io li rimbeccai e dissi: "Sarà il Dio del cielo a farci avere un esito felice. Noi, suoi servi, ci accingiamo a costruire; per voi invece non vi sarà parte né diritto né ricordo in Gerusalemme!".
