Now it happened that, in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of king Artaxerxes, wine was before him; and I lifted up the wine, and I gave it to the king. And I was like someone languishing before his face.1 No mês de Nisan, (que é o primeiro mês do ano), no ano vigésimo do reinado de Artaxerxes, o vinho estava posto diante dele; eu tomeio-o e ministrei-o ao rei. Nunca, até então, eu tinha aparecido triste na sua presença.
And the king said to me: “Why is your expression sad, though you do not appear to be sick? This is not without cause, but some evil, I know not what, is in your heart.” And I was struck with an exceedingly great fear.2 O rei disse-me: Por que está triste o teu rosto, não te vendo eu doente? Não pode ser outra coisa senão algum desgosto que haja em teu coração. Apoderou-se então de mim um grande temor,
And I said to the king: “O king, live forever. Why should my expression not be mournful, since the city of the house of the sepulchers of my father is desolate, and its gates have been burned with fire?”3 e disse ao rei: O rei, vive eternamente; como não há-de estar o meu rosto amargurado, quando a cidade, que é a casa dos sepulcros de meus pais, está deserta, e as suas portas foram queimadas pelo fogo?
And the king said to me: “What would you request?” And I prayed to the God of heaven.4 O rei disse-me : Que queres tu pedir? Eu, encomendando-me ao Deus do céu,
And I said to the king: “If it seems good to the king, and if your servant is pleasing before your face: that you would send me into Judea, to the city of the sepulcher of my father. And I will rebuild it.”5 disse ao rei: Se é do agrado do rei, se o teu servo te é agradável, peço-te que me mandes à Judeia, à cidade do sepulcro de meu pais, que eu a reedificarei.
And the king said to me, with the queen who was sitting beside him: “Until what time will your journey be, and when will you return?” And it was pleasing before the countenance of the king, and so he sent me. And I established a time for him.6 O rei, estando a rainha sentada a seu lado, perguntou-me: Que tempo durará a tua jornada? Quando voltarás tu? Eu disse-lhe o tempo, e aprouve ao rei enviar-me.
And I said to the king: “If it seems good to the king, may he give me letters to the governors of the region beyond the river, so that they may lead me through, until I arrive in Judea,7 Depois disse ao rei: Se é do agrado do rei, sejam-me dadas cartas para os governadores das províncias de além do rio, para que me dêem passagem, até eu chegar à Judeia,
and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king’s forest, so that he may give me timber, in order that I may be able to cover the gates of the tower of the house, and the walls of the city, and the house that I will enter.” And the king granted to me in accord with the good hand of my God, who is with me.8 assim como uma carta para Asaf, guarda do bosque do rei, a fim de me fornecer madeiras para as portas das torres da casa (de Deus), para os muros da cidade e para a casa em que eu me alojar. O rei concedeu-me tudo, porque a mão favorável do meu Deus era comigo.
And I went to the governors of the region beyond the river, and I gave them the letters of the king. Now the king had sent with me military leaders and horsemen.9 Fui ter com os governadores de além do rio, e apresentei-lhes as cartas do rei. O rei tinha enviado comigo oficiais do exército e cavaleiros.
And Sanballat, a Horonite, and the servant Tobiah, an Ammonite, heard this. And they were saddened, with a great affliction, that a man had arrived who was seeking the prosperity of the sons of Israel.10 Sanabalat Honorita, e Tobias Amonita, servo (do rei), souberam-no, e ficaram em extremo tristes, por ter chegado um homem que buscava o bem dos filhos de Israel.
And I arrived at Jerusalem, and I was there for three days.11 Cheguei a Jerusalém, e estive lá três dias,
And I got up in the night, I and a few men with me. And I did not reveal to anyone what God had placed in my heart to do in Jerusalem. And there was no animal with me, except the animal on which I was sitting.12 passados os quais, levantei-me de noite, com poucas pessoas, sem dizer a ninguém o que Deus me tinha inspirado no meu coração para fazer em Jerusalém. Não tinha comigo outro cavalo, senão aquele em que cavalgava.
And I departed in the night through the gate of the valley, and before the fountain of the dragon, and toward the dung gate. And I considered the wall of Jerusalem, which was broken apart, and its gates, which had been consumed by fire.13 Saí de noite pela porta do Vale, em direcção à fonte do Dragão e à porta da Esterqueira, e contemplei os muros de Jerusalém deitados abaixo e as suas portas consumidas pelo fogo.
And I continued on to the gate of the fountain, and to the aqueduct of the king. And there was no room for the beast on which I was sitting to pass through.14 Dali passei à porta da Fonte (de Siloé) e à piscina do Rei, mas não havia lugar por onde pudesse passar o cavalo em que ia montado.
And so I climbed up in the night along the torrent, and I considered the wall. And turning back, I went by the gate of the valley, and I returned.15 Subi de noite pela torrente e inspeccionei os muros. Voltando, cheguei à porta do Vale e recolhi-me.
Now the magistrates did not know where I had gone, or what I had done. For I had revealed nothing, even to that point in time, to the Jews, or to the priests, or to the nobles, or to the magistrates, or to the others who were doing the work.16 Os magistrados não sabiam onde eu tinha ido, nem o que eu fazia; até então não tinham descoberto nada, nem aos Judeus, nem aos sacerdotes, nem aos grandes, nem aos magistrados, nem aos outros que se deviam ocupar das obras.
And so I said to them: “You know the affliction in which we are, because Jerusalem is desolate, and its gates have been consumed by fire. Come, and let us rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, and let us no longer be in disgrace.”17 Então disse-lhes: Vós vedes a aflição em que estamos; Jerusalém está deserta, e as suas portas foram consumidas pelo fogo; vinde e restauremos os muros de Jerusalém, não sejamos mais (um objecto de) opróbio (para os nossos inimigos),
And I revealed to them how the hand of my God was with me for good, and the words of the king, which he had spoken to me. And I said: “Let us rise up, and build.” And their hands were strengthened for good.18 Depois referi-lhes como a mão do meu Deus me era favorável, as palavras que o rei me tinha dito, e acrescentei: Vamos e empreendamos a obra. Eles puseram, com coragem, as suas mãos a esta boa obra.
But Sanballat, a Horonite, and the servant Tobiah, an Ammonite, and Geshem, an Arab, heard of it. And they ridiculed and disparaged us, and they said: “What is this thing that you are doing? Could you be rebelling against the king?”19 Sanabalat Honorita, Tobias Amonita e Gossem, o Arabe, souberam-no, fizeram zombaria de nós, desprezaram-nos e disseram: Que é isso que vós fazeis? Quereis porventura revoltar-vos contra o rei?
And I replied to them a word, and I said to them: “The God of heaven himself is helping us, and we are his servants. Let us rise up and build. But there is no portion, or justice, or remembrance in Jerusalem for you.”20 Eu respondi-lhe: O Deus do céu é o que nos ajuda. Nós somos seus servos; levantemo-nos e reedifiquemos. Quanto a vós, não tendes parte, nem direito, nem lembrança em Jerusalém.
