Nehemiah 2

1 Now it happened that, in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of king Artaxerxes, wine was before him; and I lifted up the wine, and I gave it to the king. And I was like someone languishing before his face.	1 Au mois de Nisan, la vingtième année du roi Artaxerxès, comme j'étais chargé du vin, je pris le vinet l'offris au roi. Je n'avais, auparavant, jamais été triste.
2 And the king said to me: “Why is your expression sad, though you do not appear to be sick? This is not without cause, but some evil, I know not what, is in your heart.” And I was struck with an exceedingly great fear.	2 Aussi le roi me dit-il: "Pourquoi ce triste visage? Tu n'es pourtant pas malade? Non, c'estassurément une affliction du coeur!" Je fus pris d'une vive appréhension
3 And I said to the king: “O king, live forever. Why should my expression not be mournful, since the city of the house of the sepulchers of my father is desolate, and its gates have been burned with fire?”	3 et dis au roi: "Que le roi vive à jamais! Comment mon visage ne serait-il pas triste quand la villeoù sont les tombeaux de mes pères est en ruines et ses portes dévorées par le feu?"
4 And the king said to me: “What would you request?” And I prayed to the God of heaven.	4 Et le roi de me dire: "Quelle est donc ta requête?" J'invoquai le Dieu du ciel
5 And I said to the king: “If it seems good to the king, and if your servant is pleasing before your face: that you would send me into Judea, to the city of the sepulcher of my father. And I will rebuild it.”	5 et répondis au roi: "S'il plaît au roi et que tu sois satisfait de ton serviteur, laisse-moi aller en Juda,dans la ville des tombeaux de mes pères, que je la reconstruise."
6 And the king said to me, with the queen who was sitting beside him: “Until what time will your journey be, and when will you return?” And it was pleasing before the countenance of the king, and so he sent me. And I established a time for him.	6 Le roi me demanda - la reine était alors assise à ses côtés -: "Jusques à quand durera ton voyage?Quand reviendras-tu?" Je lui fixai une date, qui convint au roi, et il m'autorisa à partir.
7 And I said to the king: “If it seems good to the king, may he give me letters to the governors of the region beyond the river, so that they may lead me through, until I arrive in Judea,	7 Je dis encore au roi: "S'il plaît au roi, qu'on me donne des lettres pour les gouverneurs deTranseuphratène, afin qu'ils me laissent passer jusqu'à ce que j'arrive en Juda;
8 and a letter to Asaph, the keeper of the king’s forest, so that he may give me timber, in order that I may be able to cover the gates of the tower of the house, and the walls of the city, and the house that I will enter.” And the king granted to me in accord with the good hand of my God, who is with me.	8 et aussi une lettre pour Asaph, l'inspecteur du parc royal, afin qu'il me fournisse du bois deconstruction pour les portes de la citadelle du Temple, le rempart de la ville et la maison où j'habiterai." Le roime l'accorda, car la main bienveillante de mon Dieu était sur moi.
9 And I went to the governors of the region beyond the river, and I gave them the letters of the king. Now the king had sent with me military leaders and horsemen.	9 Je me rendis donc chez les gouverneurs de Transeuphratène et leur remis les lettres du roi. Le roim'avait fait escorter par des officiers de l'armée et des cavaliers.
10 And Sanballat, a Horonite, and the servant Tobiah, an Ammonite, heard this. And they were saddened, with a great affliction, that a man had arrived who was seeking the prosperity of the sons of Israel.	10 Quand Sânballat, le Horonite, et Tobiyya, le fonctionnaire ammonite, furent informés, ils semontrèrent fort contrariés qu'un homme fût venu travailler au bien des Israélites.
11 And I arrived at Jerusalem, and I was there for three days.	11 Arrivé à Jérusalem, j'y restai trois jours.
12 And I got up in the night, I and a few men with me. And I did not reveal to anyone what God had placed in my heart to do in Jerusalem. And there was no animal with me, except the animal on which I was sitting.	12 Puis je me levai, de nuit, accompagné de quelques hommes, sans avoir confié à personne ce quemon Dieu m'avait inspiré d'accomplir pour Jérusalem, et sans avoir avec moi d'autre animal que ma propremonture.
13 And I departed in the night through the gate of the valley, and before the fountain of the dragon, and toward the dung gate. And I considered the wall of Jerusalem, which was broken apart, and its gates, which had been consumed by fire.	13 La nuit donc, sortant par la porte de la Vallée, je me rendis devant la fontaine du Dragon, puis àla porte du Fumier: je fis l'inspection du rempart de Jérusalem, où il y avait des brèches et dont les portes avaientété incendiées.
14 And I continued on to the gate of the fountain, and to the aqueduct of the king. And there was no room for the beast on which I was sitting to pass through.	14 Je poursuivis mon chemin vers la porte de la Fontaine et l'étang du Roi, et ne trouvai plus depassage pour la bête que je chevauchais.
15 And so I climbed up in the night along the torrent, and I considered the wall. And turning back, I went by the gate of the valley, and I returned.	15 Je remontai donc de nuit par le ravin, inspectant toujours le rempart, et rentrai par la porte de laVallée. Je m'en revins ainsi,
16 Now the magistrates did not know where I had gone, or what I had done. For I had revealed nothing, even to that point in time, to the Jews, or to the priests, or to the nobles, or to the magistrates, or to the others who were doing the work.	16 sans que les conseillers sachent où j'étais allé ni ce que je faisais. Jusqu'ici je n'avais riencommuniqué aux Juifs: ni aux prêtres, ni aux grands, ni aux magistrats, ni aux autres responsables;
17 And so I said to them: “You know the affliction in which we are, because Jerusalem is desolate, and its gates have been consumed by fire. Come, and let us rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, and let us no longer be in disgrace.”	17 je leur dis alors: "Vous voyez la détresse où nous sommes: Jérusalem est en ruines, ses portessont incendiées. Venez! reconstruisons le rempart de Jérusalem, et nous ne serons plus insultés!"
18 And I revealed to them how the hand of my God was with me for good, and the words of the king, which he had spoken to me. And I said: “Let us rise up, and build.” And their hands were strengthened for good.	18 Et je leur exposai comment la main bienveillante de mon Dieu avait été sur moi, leur rapportantaussi les paroles que le roi m'avait dites. "Levons-nous! s'écrièrent-ils, et construisons!" et ils affermirent leursmains pour ce bel ouvrage.
19 But Sanballat, a Horonite, and the servant Tobiah, an Ammonite, and Geshem, an Arab, heard of it. And they ridiculed and disparaged us, and they said: “What is this thing that you are doing? Could you be rebelling against the king?”	19 A ces nouvelles, Sânballat, le Horonite, Tobiyya, le fonctionnaire ammonite, et Géshem, l'Arabe,se moquèrent de nous et nous regardèrent avec mépris en disant: "Que faites-vous là? Allez-vous vous révoltercontre le roi?"
20 And I replied to them a word, and I said to them: “The God of heaven himself is helping us, and we are his servants. Let us rise up and build. But there is no portion, or justice, or remembrance in Jerusalem for you.”	20 Mais je leur répliquai en ces termes: "C'est le Dieu du ciel qui nous fera réussir. Nous, sesserviteurs, nous allons nous mettre à construire. Quant à vous, vous n'avez ni part, ni droit, ni souvenir dansJérusalem."
