1 When it had been decided that we should sail to Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handedover to a centurion cal ed Julius, of the Augustan cohort.	1 - Quando dunque fu determinato di far vela per l'Italia, Paolo e cert'altri prigionieri furon consegnati a un centurione, di nome Giulio, della coorte Augusta.
2 We boarded a vessel from Adramyttium bound for ports on the Asiatic coast and put to sea; we hadAristarchus with us, a Macedonian of Thessalonica.	2 E, saliti sopra una nave di Adramitto che doveva costeggiare i porti dell'Asia, salpammo, avendo con noi Aristarco, macedone di Tessalonica.
3 Next day we put in at Sidon, and Julius was considerate enough to al ow Paul to go to his friends to belooked after.	3 Il giorno seguente arrivammo a Sidone; e Giulio, che trattava Paolo con benevolenza, gli permise di andare da' suoi amici a ristorarsi.
4 From there we put to sea again, but as the winds were against us we sailed under the lee of Cyprus,	4 Poi, partiti di là, navigammo sotto Cipro, perchè i vènti eran contrari;
5 then across the open sea off Cilicia and Pamphylia, taking a fortnight to reach Myra in Lycia.	5 e, traversato il mare di Cilicia e Panfilia, arrivammo a Mira di Licia.
6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship leaving for Italy and put us aboard.	6 Qui il centurione, trovata una nave alessandrina che faceva rotta per l'Italia, ci trasferì in essa.
7 For some days we made little headway, and we had difficulty in making Cnidus. The wind would notal ow us to touch there, so we sailed under the lee of Crete off Cape Salmone	7 E dopo aver navigato lentamente per molti giorni, arrivammo con pena dirimpetto a Gnido, trattenuti dal vento, ci accostammo a Creta, dalla parte di Salmone;
8 and struggled along the coast until we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea.	8 e costeggiando con gran difficoltà, venimmo a un certo luogo, chiamato Beiporti, vicino a cui era la città di Talassa.
9 A great deal of time had been lost, and navigation was already hazardous, since it was now wel afterthe time of the Fast, so Paul gave them this warning,	9 Passato così molto tempo, e il navigar facendosi sempre più pericoloso, perchè era passato il digiuno, Paolo li ammoniva
10 'Friends, I can see this voyage will be dangerous and that we wil run considerable risk of losing notonly the cargo and the ship but also our lives as well.'	10 dicendo: «Uomini, io vedo che la navigazione riuscirà di danno e perdita grande, non solo del carico e della nave, ma anche delle nostre vite».
11 But the centurion took more notice of the captain and the ship's owner than of what Paul was saying;	11 Ma il centurione credeva più al pilota e al padron della nave che non alle cose dette da Paolo.
12 and since the harbour was unsuitable for wintering, the majority were for putting out from there in thehope of wintering at Phoenix -- a harbour in Crete, facing south-west and north-west.	12 E siccome quel porto non era adatto a svernare, i più furon di parere di partirne e, se fosse possibile, spingersi fino a Fenice, porto di Creta, che guarda a libeccio e a maestro, e di passarvi l'inverno.
13 A southerly breeze sprang up and, thinking their objective as good as reached, they weighed anchorand began to sail past Crete, close inshore.	13 Soffiando poi l'australe, credettero d'esser al loro proposito, quindi, tolte le ancore, costeggiavano Creta più da vicino.
14 But it was not long before a hurricane, the 'north-easter' as they cal it, burst on them from across theisland.	14 Ma poco dopo si rovesciò su essa un vento tifonico, che si chiama Euro-Aquilone;
15 The ship was caught and could not keep head to wind, so we had to give way to the wind and letourselves be driven.	15 e siccome la nave era portata via, non potendo resistere al vento, noi la lasciammo andare, trascinati con essa.
16 We ran under the lee of a smal island called Cauda and managed with some difficulty to bring theship's boat under control.	16 Così, correndo sotto un'isola chiamata Cauda, riuscimmo con gran difficoltà ad assicurarci della scialuppa.
17 Having hauled it up they used it to undergird the ship; then, afraid of running aground on the Syrtisbanks, they floated out the sea-anchor and so let themselves drift.	17 Tiratala su, misero in opera i ripari, ricingendo la nave, e, per timore di finir sulla Sirte, ammainarono le vele lasciandosi trasportare.
18 As we were thoroughly storm-bound, the next day they began to jettison the cargo,	18 In tal modo, trovandoci fieramente sbattuti dalla tempesta, il giorno appresso cominciarono a far getto del carico;
19 and the third day they threw the ship's gear overboard with their own hands.	19 e il terzo giorno, con le lor proprie mani buttarono a mare gli attrezzi della nave.
20 For a number of days both the sun and the stars were invisible and the storm raged unabated until atlast we gave up al hope of surviving.	20 Più giorni passarono senza veder nè sole nè stelle; la tempesta infuriava su noi; già perduta era ogni speranza di salvarci.
21 Then, when they had been without food for a long time, Paul stood up among the men. 'Friends,' hesaid, 'you should have listened to me and not put out from Crete. You would have spared yourselves al thisdamage and loss.	21 E poichè si stava da un pezzo senza prender cibo, Paolo, ritto in mezzo a quelli, disse: «Uomini, bisognava darmi ascolto, e non partire da Creta; vi sareste risparmiati questo strapazzo e questo danno.
22 But now I ask you not to give way to despair. There wil be no loss of life at al , only of the ship.	22 Ma ora vi conforto a star di buon animo, giacchè nessuno di voi perirà, e solo la nave andrà perduta.
23 Last night there appeared beside me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve,	23 Mi è apparso proprio questa notte un angelo di quel Dio, di cui io sono e a cui servo,
24 and he said, "Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to appear before Caesar, and God grants youthe safety of al who are sailing with you."	24 dicendomi: - Paolo, non temere; tu devi comparire dinanzi a Cesare; ed ecco, Dio t'ha fatto dono di tutti quelli che navigano con te.-
25 So take courage, friends; I trust in God that things will turn out just as I was told;	25 Perciò, uomini, fatevi animo, perchè ho fede in Dio che avverrà così, come m'è stato detto.
26 but we are to be stranded on some island.'	26 Or ci bisogna d'esser gettati su una qualche isola».
27 On the fourteenth night we were being driven one way and another in the Adriatic, when aboutmidnight the crew sensed that land of some sort was near.	27 Eravamo alla quattordicesima notte, sbattuti per l'Adriatico, quando verso la mezzanotte i marinai credettero d'esser vicini a qualche terra.
28 They took soundings and found twenty fathoms; after a short interval they sounded again and foundfifteen fathoms.	28 Calato lo scandaglio, trovarono venti braccia; e più in là, trovarono quindici braccia.
29 Then, afraid that we might run aground somewhere on a reef, they dropped four anchors from thestern and prayed for daylight.	29 Temendo allora di dar negli scogli, gettarono da poppa quattro ancore, e sospiravano che facesse giorno.
30 When the crew tried to escape from the ship and lowered the ship's boat into the sea as though theymeant to lay out anchors from the bows, Paul said to the centurion and his men,	30 Ma, siccome i marinai meditavano fuggir dalla nave, e avevan messo in mare un battello col pretesto di stendere le ancore, dalla prua,
31 'Unless those men stay on board you cannot hope to be saved.'	31 Paolo disse al centurione e a' soldati: «Se costoro non restano sulla nave, voi non potete scampare».
32 So the soldiers cut the boat's ropes and let it drop away.	32 Allora i soldati tagliarono le funi del battello, e lo lasciarono cadere.
33 Just before daybreak Paul urged them al to have something to eat. 'For fourteen days', he said, 'youhave been in suspense, going hungry and eating nothing.	33 E come si fu all'alba, Paolo esortava tutti a prender cibo, dicendo: «Oggi son quattordici giorni che state aspettando digiuni, senza prender nulla;
34 I urge you to have something to eat; your safety depends on it. Not a hair of any of your heads wil belost.'	34 perciò vi esorto a prender cibo per la vostra salvezza; del resto nessun di voi perderà neppur un capello del capo».
35 With these words he took some bread, gave thanks to God in view of them al , broke it and began toeat.	35 Detto così prese del pane, rese grazie a Dio in presenza di tutti, lo spezzò e cominciò a mangiare.
36 They al plucked up courage and took something to eat themselves.	36 Tutti allora si fecero animo e presero anch'essi del cibo.
37 In al we were two hundred and seventy-six souls on board that ship.	37 Nella nave eravamo duecentosettantasei persone.
38 When they had eaten what they wanted they lightened the ship by throwing the corn overboard intothe sea.	38 E quando si furon saziati di cibo, alleggerirono la nave gettando il frumento in mare.
39 When day came they did not recognise the land, but they could make out a bay with a beach; theyplanned to run the ship aground on this if they could.	39 Fattosi giorno, non riconoscevano la terra; ma scòrsero un certo seno che aveva spiaggia, e deliberarono di spingervi la nave, se venisse lor fatto.
40 They slipped the anchors and let them fal into the sea, and at the same time loosened the lashings ofthe rudders; then, hoisting the foresail to the wind, they headed for the beach.	40 Quindi, lasciate le ancore e sciolti i legami de' timoni, s'abbandonarono al mare; e alzato l'artimone, secondo il soffiar del vento, tiravano al lido.
41 But the cross-currents carried them into a shoal and the vessel ran aground. The bows were wedgedin and stuck fast, while the stern began to break up with the pounding of the waves.	41 Ma, avendo dato in una punta di terra che aveva il mare dai due lati, arenarono; e mentre la prua, affondatasi, stava immobile, la poppa si sfasciava sotto i colpi del mare.
42 The soldiers planned to kil the prisoners for fear that any should swim off and escape.	42 Il parere de' soldati era d'uccidere i prigionieri affinchè nessuno scappasse a nuoto.
43 But the centurion was determined to bring Paul safely through and would not let them carry out theirplan. He gave orders that those who could swim should jump overboard first and so get ashore,	43 Ma il centurione, che voleva salvar Paolo, mandò a vuoto quel disegno, ordinando che quanti sapevano nuotare si gettassero giù i primi e andassero a terra;
44 and the rest fol ow either on planks or on pieces of wreckage. In this way it happened that al camesafe and sound to land.	44 gli altri poi li portarono parte su tavole, e parte su rottami della nave. E così avvenne che tutti si salvarono a terra.
