1 When it had been decided that we should sail to Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handedover to a centurion cal ed Julius, of the Augustan cohort.	1 Als unsere Abfahrt nach Italien feststand, wurden Paulus und einige andere Gefangene einem Hauptmann der kaiserlichen Kohorte namens Julius übergeben.
2 We boarded a vessel from Adramyttium bound for ports on the Asiatic coast and put to sea; we hadAristarchus with us, a Macedonian of Thessalonica.	2 Wir bestiegen ein Schiff aus Adramyttium, das die Orte entlang der Küste Kleinasiens anlaufen sollte, und fuhren ab; bei uns war Aristarch, der Mazedonier aus Thessalonich.
3 Next day we put in at Sidon, and Julius was considerate enough to al ow Paul to go to his friends to belooked after.	3 Am anderen Tag liefen wir in Sidon ein und Julius, der Paulus wohlwollend behandelte, erlaubte ihm, zu seinen Freunden zu gehen und sich versorgen zu lassen.
4 From there we put to sea again, but as the winds were against us we sailed under the lee of Cyprus,	4 Von dort fuhren wir weiter und umsegelten, weil wir Gegenwind hatten, Zypern.
5 then across the open sea off Cilicia and Pamphylia, taking a fortnight to reach Myra in Lycia.	5 Wir fuhren durch das Meer von Zilizien und Pamphylien und erreichten Myra in Lyzien.
6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship leaving for Italy and put us aboard.	6 Dort fand der Hauptmann ein alexandrinisches Schiff, das nach Italien fuhr, und er brachte uns an Bord.
7 For some days we made little headway, and we had difficulty in making Cnidus. The wind would notal ow us to touch there, so we sailed under the lee of Crete off Cape Salmone	7 Viele Tage lang kamen wir nur langsam vorwärts und mit Mühe erreichten wir die Höhe von Knidos. Da uns der Wind nicht herankommen ließ, umsegelten wir Kreta bei Salmone,
8 and struggled along the coast until we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea.	8 fuhren unter großer Mühe an Kreta entlang und erreichten einen Ort namens Kalói Liménes, in dessen Nähe die Stadt Lasäa liegt.
9 A great deal of time had been lost, and navigation was already hazardous, since it was now wel afterthe time of the Fast, so Paul gave them this warning,	9 Da inzwischen längere Zeit vergangen und die Schifffahrt bereits unsicher geworden war - sogar das Fasten war schon vorüber -, warnte Paulus und sagte:
10 'Friends, I can see this voyage will be dangerous and that we wil run considerable risk of losing notonly the cargo and the ship but also our lives as well.'	10 Männer, ich sehe, die Fahrt wird mit Gefahr und großem Schaden verbunden sein, nicht nur für die Ladung und das Schiff, sondern auch für unser Leben.
11 But the centurion took more notice of the captain and the ship's owner than of what Paul was saying;	11 Der Hauptmann aber vertraute dem Steuermann und dem Kapitän mehr als den Worten des Paulus.
12 and since the harbour was unsuitable for wintering, the majority were for putting out from there in thehope of wintering at Phoenix -- a harbour in Crete, facing south-west and north-west.	12 Da der Hafen zum Überwintern ungeeignet war, beschloss die Mehrheit weiterzufahren, um nach Möglichkeit Phönix zu erreichen, einen nach Südwesten und Nordwesten offenen Hafen von Kreta; dort wollten sie überwintern.
13 A southerly breeze sprang up and, thinking their objective as good as reached, they weighed anchorand began to sail past Crete, close inshore.	13 Als leichter Südwind aufkam, meinten sie, ihr Vorhaben sei schon geglückt; sie lichteten den Anker und fuhren dicht an Kreta entlang.
14 But it was not long before a hurricane, the 'north-easter' as they cal it, burst on them from across theisland.	14 Doch kurz darauf brach von der Insel her ein Orkan los, Eurakylon genannt.
15 The ship was caught and could not keep head to wind, so we had to give way to the wind and letourselves be driven.	15 Das Schiff wurde mitgerissen, und weil es nicht mehr gegen den Wind gedreht werden konnte, gaben wir auf und ließen uns treiben.
16 We ran under the lee of a smal island called Cauda and managed with some difficulty to bring theship's boat under control.	16 Während wir unter einer kleinen Insel namens Kauda hinfuhren, konnten wir das Beiboot nur mit Mühe in die Gewalt bekommen.
17 Having hauled it up they used it to undergird the ship; then, afraid of running aground on the Syrtisbanks, they floated out the sea-anchor and so let themselves drift.	17 Die Matrosen hoben es hoch, dann sicherten sie das Schiff, indem sie Taue darum herumspannten. Weil sie fürchteten, in die Syrte zu geraten, ließen sie den Treibanker hinab und trieben dahin.
18 As we were thoroughly storm-bound, the next day they began to jettison the cargo,	18 Da wir vom Sturm hart bedrängt wurden, erleichterten sie am nächsten Tag das Schiff,
19 and the third day they threw the ship's gear overboard with their own hands.	19 und am dritten Tag warfen sie eigenhändig die Schiffsausrüstung über Bord.
20 For a number of days both the sun and the stars were invisible and the storm raged unabated until atlast we gave up al hope of surviving.	20 Mehrere Tage hindurch zeigten sich weder Sonne noch Sterne und der heftige Sturm hielt an. Schließlich schwand uns alle Hoffnung auf Rettung.
21 Then, when they had been without food for a long time, Paul stood up among the men. 'Friends,' hesaid, 'you should have listened to me and not put out from Crete. You would have spared yourselves al thisdamage and loss.	21 Niemand wollte mehr essen; da trat Paulus in ihre Mitte und sagte: Männer, man hätte auf mich hören und von Kreta nicht abfahren sollen, dann wären uns dieses Unglück und der Schaden erspart geblieben.
22 But now I ask you not to give way to despair. There wil be no loss of life at al , only of the ship.	22 Doch jetzt ermahne ich euch: Verliert nicht den Mut! Niemand von euch wird sein Leben verlieren, nur das Schiff wird untergehen.
23 Last night there appeared beside me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve,	23 Denn in dieser Nacht ist ein Engel des Gottes, dem ich gehöre und dem ich diene, zu mir gekommen
24 and he said, "Do not be afraid, Paul. You are destined to appear before Caesar, and God grants youthe safety of al who are sailing with you."	24 und hat gesagt: Fürchte dich nicht, Paulus! Du musst vor den Kaiser treten. Und Gott hat dir alle geschenkt, die mit dir fahren.
25 So take courage, friends; I trust in God that things will turn out just as I was told;	25 Habt also Mut, Männer! Denn ich vertraue auf Gott, dass es so kommen wird, wie mir gesagt worden ist.
26 but we are to be stranded on some island.'	26 Wir müssen allerdings an einer Insel stranden.
27 On the fourteenth night we were being driven one way and another in the Adriatic, when aboutmidnight the crew sensed that land of some sort was near.	27 Als wir schon die vierzehnte Nacht auf der Adria trieben, merkten die Matrosen um Mitternacht, dass sich ihnen Land näherte.
28 They took soundings and found twenty fathoms; after a short interval they sounded again and foundfifteen fathoms.	28 Sie warfen das Lot hinab und maßen zwanzig Faden; kurz danach loteten sie nochmals und maßen fünfzehn Faden.
29 Then, afraid that we might run aground somewhere on a reef, they dropped four anchors from thestern and prayed for daylight.	29 Aus Furcht, wir könnten auf Klippen laufen, warfen sie vom Heck aus vier Anker und wünschten den Tag herbei.
30 When the crew tried to escape from the ship and lowered the ship's boat into the sea as though theymeant to lay out anchors from the bows, Paul said to the centurion and his men,	30 Als aber die Matrosen unter dem Vorwand, sie wollten vom Bug aus Anker auswerfen, vom Schiff zu fliehen versuchten und das Beiboot ins Meer hinunterließen,
31 'Unless those men stay on board you cannot hope to be saved.'	31 sagte Paulus zum Hauptmann und zu den Soldaten: Wenn sie nicht auf dem Schiff bleiben, könnt ihr nicht gerettet werden.
32 So the soldiers cut the boat's ropes and let it drop away.	32 Da kappten die Soldaten die Taue des Beibootes und ließen es forttreiben.
33 Just before daybreak Paul urged them al to have something to eat. 'For fourteen days', he said, 'youhave been in suspense, going hungry and eating nothing.	33 Bis in die Morgendämmerung hinein ermunterte Paulus alle, etwas zu essen, und sagte: Heute ist schon der vierzehnte Tag, dass ihr ausharrt, ohne auch nur die geringste Nahrung zu euch zu nehmen.
34 I urge you to have something to eat; your safety depends on it. Not a hair of any of your heads wil belost.'	34 Deshalb rate ich euch: Esst etwas; das ist gut für eure Rettung. Denn keinem von euch wird auch nur ein Haar von seinem Kopf verloren gehen.
35 With these words he took some bread, gave thanks to God in view of them al , broke it and began toeat.	35 Nach diesen Worten nahm er Brot, dankte Gott vor den Augen aller, brach es und begann zu essen.
36 They al plucked up courage and took something to eat themselves.	36 Da fassten alle Mut und aßen ebenfalls.
37 In al we were two hundred and seventy-six souls on board that ship.	37 Wir waren im ganzen zweihundertsechsundsiebzig Menschen an Bord.
38 When they had eaten what they wanted they lightened the ship by throwing the corn overboard intothe sea.	38 Nachdem sie sich satt gegessen hatten, warfen sie das Getreide ins Meer, um das Schiff zu erleichtern.
39 When day came they did not recognise the land, but they could make out a bay with a beach; theyplanned to run the ship aground on this if they could.	39 Als es nun Tag wurde, entdeckten die Matrosen eine Bucht mit flachem Strand; auf ihn wollten sie, wenn möglich, das Schiff auflaufen lassen; das Land selbst war ihnen unbekannt.
40 They slipped the anchors and let them fal into the sea, and at the same time loosened the lashings ofthe rudders; then, hoisting the foresail to the wind, they headed for the beach.	40 Sie machten die Anker los und ließen sie im Meer zurück. Zugleich lösten sie die Haltetaue der Steuerruder, hissten das Vorsegel und hielten mit dem Wind auf den Strand zu.
41 But the cross-currents carried them into a shoal and the vessel ran aground. The bows were wedgedin and stuck fast, while the stern began to break up with the pounding of the waves.	41 Als sie aber auf eine Sandbank gerieten, strandeten sie mit dem Schiff; der Bug bohrte sich ein und saß unbeweglich fest; das Heck aber begann in der Brandung zu zerbrechen.
42 The soldiers planned to kil the prisoners for fear that any should swim off and escape.	42 Da beschlossen die Soldaten, die Gefangenen zu töten, damit keiner schwimmend entkommen könne.
43 But the centurion was determined to bring Paul safely through and would not let them carry out theirplan. He gave orders that those who could swim should jump overboard first and so get ashore,	43 Der Hauptmann aber wollte Paulus retten und hinderte sie an ihrem Vorhaben. Er befahl, dass zuerst alle, die schwimmen konnten, über Bord springen und an Land gehen sollten,
44 and the rest fol ow either on planks or on pieces of wreckage. In this way it happened that al camesafe and sound to land.	44 dann die Übrigen, teils auf Planken, teils auf anderen Schiffstrümmern. So kam es, dass alle ans Land gerettet wurden.
