1 That night the king could not sleep; he called for the Record Book, or Annals, to be brought and read tohim.	1 Le roi passa cette nuit-là sans dormir, et il ordonna qu'on lui apportât les histoires et les annales des temps précédents. Et comme on les lisait devant lui,
2 They contained an account of how Mordecai had denounced Bigthan and Teresh, two of the king'seunuchs serving as Guards of the Threshold, who had plotted to assassinate King Ahasuerus.	2 on en vint à ce passage où il était écrit de quelle manière Mardochée avait révélé la conspiration des eunuques Bagathan et Tharès, qui avaient voulu assassiner le roi Assuérus.
3 'And what honour and dignity', the king asked, 'was conferred on Mordecai for this?' 'Nothing has beendone for him,' the gentlemen-in-waiting replied.	3 Lorsque le roi eut entendu ces choses, il dit : Quel honneur et quelle récompense Mardochée a-t-il reçus pour cette fidélité? Ses serviteurs et ses officiers lui dirent : Il n'a reçu absolument aucune récompense.
4 The king then said, 'Who is outside in the antechamber?' Haman had, that very moment, entered theouter antechamber of the private apartments, to ask the king to have Mordecai hanged on the gal ows which hehad just put up for the purpose.	4 Et le roi dit aussitôt : Qui est dans le parvis? Or Aman était entré dans la cour intérieure de la maison royale, pour suggérer au roi d'ordonner que Mardochée fût attaché à la potence qui lui avait été préparée.
5 So the king's gentlemen-in-waiting replied, 'It is Haman out in the antechamber.' 'Bring him in,' the kingsaid,	5 Les serviteurs répondirent : Aman est dans le parvis. Et le roi dit : Qu'il entre.
6 and, as soon as Haman came in, went on to ask, 'What is the right way to treat a man whom the kingwishes to honour?' 'Whom', thought Haman, 'would the king wish to honour, if not me?'	6 Et, lorsqu'il fut entré, le roi lui dit : Que doit-on faire à un homme que le roi désire honorer? Aman, pensant en lui-même et s'imaginant que le roi n'en voulait point honorer d'autre que lui,
7 So he replied, 'If the king wishes to honour someone,	7 répondit : L'homme que le roi veut honorer
8 royal robes should be brought from the king's wardrobe, and a horse from the king's stable, sporting aroyal diadem on its head.	8 doit être revêtu des habits royaux, placé sur le cheval que le roi monte, et recevoir le diadème royal sur sa tête,
9 The robes and horse should be entrusted to one of the noblest of the king's officers-of-state, who shouldthen array the man whom the king wishes to honour and lead him on horseback through the city square,proclaiming before him: "This is the way a man shall be treated whom the king wishes to honour." '	9 et il faut que le premier des princes et des dignitaires royaux tienne son cheval, et que, marchant devant lui à travers la place de la ville, il crie : Ainsi sera honoré celui qu'il plaira au roi d'honorer.
10 'Hurry,' the king said to Haman, 'take the robes and the horse, and do everything you have just said toMordecai the Jew, who works at the Chancel ery. On no account leave out anything that you have mentioned.'	10 Et le roi lui dit : Hâtez-vous, prenez le vêtement royal et le cheval, et ce que vous avez dit, faites-le au Juif Mardochée qui est assis à la porte du palais. Prenez garde de ne rien omettre de tout ce que vous venez de dire.
11 So taking the robes and the horse, Haman arrayed Mordecai and led him on horseback through thecity square, proclaiming before him: 'This is the way a man shal be treated whom the king wishes to honour.'	11 Aman prit donc le vêtement et le cheval. Et ayant revêtu Mardochée dans la place de la ville, et l'ayant fait monter sur le cheval, il marchait devant lui, et criait : C'est ainsi que mérite d'être honoré celui qu'il plaira au roi d'honorer.
12 After this Mordecai returned to the Chancel ery, while Haman went hurrying home in dejection andcovering his face.	12 Et Mardochée revint à la porte du palais, et Aman se hâta d'aller à sa maison, désolé et la tête voilée.
13 He told his wife Zeresh and al his friends what had just happened. His wife Zeresh and his friendssaid, 'You are beginning to fal , and Mordecai to rise; if he is Jewish, you will never get the better of him. Withhim against you, your fal is certain.'	13 Et il raconta à Zarès, sa femme, et à ses amis tout ce qui lui était arrivé. Les sages dont il prenait conseil et sa femme lui répondirent : Si ce Mardochée devant lequel vous avez commencé de tomber est de la race des Juifs, vous ne pourrez lui résister; mais vous tomberez devant lui.
14 While they were still talking, the king's officers arrived in a hurry to escort Haman to the banquet thatEsther was giving.	14 Tandis qu'ils parlaient encore, les eunuques du roi survinrent, et l'obligèrent d'aller aussitôt au festin que la reine avait préparé.
