1 He who loves his son chastises him often, that he may be his joy when he grows up.	1 Chi ama il suo figliolo lo castiga sovente per averne in futuro consolazione e perchè egli non abbia a picchiare alle porte dei vicini.
2 He who disciplines his son will benefit from him, and boast of him among his intimates.	2 Chi istruisce il suo figliolo ne avrà lode e se ne glorierà in mezzo alla gente di sua famiglia.
3 He who educates his son makes his enemy jealous, and shows his delight in him among his friends.	3 Chi istruisce il suo figliolo muoverà ad invidia il nemico, e si glorierà di lui coi suoi amici.
4 At the father's death, he will seem not dead, since he leaves after him one like himself,	4 Se suo padre muore, sarà come non fosse morto, perchè lascia dietro di sè uno simile a lui.
5 Whom he looks upon through life with joy, and even in death, without regret:	5 Lo vide in vita e ne ebbe consolazione, nella sua morte non ebbe tristezza, e non restò confuso dinanzi ai nemici.
6 The avenger he leaves against his foes, and the one to repay his friends with kindness.	6 Egli ha lasciato per i nemici un difensore della casa, e per gli amici chi saprà essere grato.
7 He who spoils his son will have wounds to bandage, and will quake inwardly at every outcry.	7 Chi accarezza il figlio ne dovrà fasciar le piaghe, e ad ogni grido sentirà straziarsi le viscere.
8 A colt untamed turns out stubborn; a son left to himself grows up unruly.	8 Il cavallo non domato diventa intrattabile, e il figlio abbandonato a se stesso diventa un rompicollo.
9 Pamper your child and he will be a terror for you, indulge him and he will bring you grief.	9 Fa' moine al figliolo e ti darà angosce, scherza con lui e ti farà triste.
10 Share not in his frivolity lest you share in his sorrow, when finally your teeth are clenched in remorse.	10 Non ridere con lui, per non avere a piangere, per non avere da ultimo allegati i denti.
11 Give him not his own way in his youth, and close not your eyes to his follies.	11 Non lo lasciar fare a modo suo nella gioventù, e non chiuder gli occhi davanti ai suoi capricci.
12 Bend him to the yoke when he is young, thrash his sides while he is still small, Lest he become stubborn, disobey you, and leave you disconsolate.	12 Fagli piegare il collo in gioventù, battigli i fianchi mentre è ancora fanciullo, in modo che non diventi caparbio e di subbidiente, con gran dolore dell'anima tua.
13 Discipline your son, make heavy his yoke, lest his folly humiliate you.	13 Istruisci il tuo figliolo e affaticati intorno a lui, per non cadere nella sua vergogna.
14 Better a poor man strong and robust, than a rich man with wasted frame.	14 Val più un povero sano e robusto, che un ricco debole e finito dalle malattie.
15 More precious than gold is health and well-being, contentment of spirit than coral.	15 La sanità dell'anima che consiste nella santità della giustizia, vai più dell'oro e dell'argento e un corpo robusto vai più d'immense ricchezze.
16 No treasure greater than a healthy body; no happiness, than a joyful heart!	16 Non c'è ricchezza maggiore della sanità del corpo, nè piacere maggiore della gioia del cuore.
17 Preferable is death to a bitter life, unending sleep to constant illness.	17 E' preferibile la morte ad una vita amara, e l'eterno riposo alla sofferenza continua.
18 Dainties set before one who cannot eat are like the offerings placed before a tomb.	18 Beni riposti in bocca chiusa sono come apparecchiate vivande poste in torno ad un sepolcro.
19 What good is an offering to an idol that can neither taste nor smell?	19 Che giovano le libazioni all'idolo? Non può nè mangiare, nè sentire l'odore.
20 So it is with the afflicted man who groans at the good things his eyes behold!	20 Così avviene a chi è perseguitato dal Signore e porta la mercede della sua iniquità.
21 Do not give in to sadness, torment not yourself with brooding;	21 Vedendo cogli occhi geme, e sospira come un eunuco che abbraccia una vergine.
22 Gladness of heart is the very life of man, cheerfulness prolongs his days.	22 Non t'abbandonare alla tristezza, e non t'affliggere coi tuoi pensieri.
23 Distract yourself, renew your courage, drive resentment far away from you; For worry has brought death to many, nor is there aught to be gained from resentment.	23 La giocondità del cuore è la vita dell'uomo, è un tesoro inesauribile di sanità, l'allegrezza dell'uomo dà la lunga vita.
24 Envy and anger shorten one's life, worry brings on premature old age.	24 Abbi pietà della tua anima, per piacere a Dio sii continente, raccogli il tuo cuore nella santità di Dio e caccia lungi da te la tristezza.
25 One who is cheerful and gay while at table benefits from his food.	25 Perchè la tristezza ne ha fatti morir molti, e non serve a nulla.
	26 L'invidia e l'ira abbreviano la vita, e i pensieri fan diventar vecchi avanti tempo.
	27 Il cuore sereno e buono è in banchetti e i suoi banchetti son preparati con diligenza.
