NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	BIBLIA
1 He who loves his son chastises him often, that he may be his joy when he grows up.	1 El que ama a su hijo, le azota sin cesar, para poderse alegrar en su futuro.
2 He who disciplines his son will benefit from him, and boast of him among his intimates.	2 El que enseña a su hijo, sacará provecho de él, entre sus conocidos de él se gloriará.
3 He who educates his son makes his enemy jealous, and shows his delight in him among his friends.	3 El que instruye a su hijo, pondrá celoso a su enemigo, y ante sus amigos se sentirá gozoso.
4 At the father's death, he will seem not dead, since he leaves after him one like himself,	4 Murió su padre, y como si no hubiera muerto, pues dejó tras de sí un hombre igual que él.
5 Whom he looks upon through life with joy, and even in death, without regret:	5 En su vida le mira con contento, y a su muerte no se siente triste.
6 The avenger he leaves against his foes, and the one to repay his friends with kindness.	6 Contra sus enemigos deja un vengador, y para los amigos quien les pague sus favores.
7 He who spoils his son will have wounds to bandage, and will quake inwardly at every outcry.	7 El que mima a su hijo, vendará sus heridas, a cada grito se le conmoverán sus entrañas.
8 A colt untamed turns out stubborn; a son left to himself grows up unruly.	8 Caballo no domado, sale indócil, hijo consentido, sale libertino.
9 Pamper your child and he will be a terror for you, indulge him and he will bring you grief.	9 Halaga a tu hijo, y te dará sorpresas juega con él, y te traerá pesares.
10 Share not in his frivolity lest you share in his sorrow, when finally your teeth are clenched in remorse.	10 No rías con él, para no llorar y acabar rechinando de dientes.
11 Give him not his own way in his youth, and close not your eyes to his follies.	11 No le des libertad en su juventud, y no pases por alto sus errores.
12 Bend him to the yoke when he is young, thrash his sides while he is still small, Lest he become stubborn, disobey you, and leave you disconsolate.	12 Doblega su cerviz mientras es joven, tunde sus costillas cuando es niño, no sea que, volviéndose indócil, te desobedezca, y sufras por él amargura de alma.
13 Discipline your son, make heavy his yoke, lest his folly humiliate you.	13 Enseña a tu hijo y trabaja en él, para que no tropieces por su desvergüenza.
14 Better a poor man strong and robust, than a rich man with wasted frame.	14 Vale más pobre sano y fuerte de constitución que rico lleno de achaques en su cuerpo.
15 More precious than gold is health and well-being, contentment of spirit than coral.	15 Salud y buena constitución valen más que todo el oro, cuerpo vigoroso más que inmensa fortuna.
16 No treasure greater than a healthy body; no happiness, than a joyful heart!	16 Ni hay riqueza mejor que la salud del cuerpo, ni contento mayor que la alegría del corazón.
17 Preferable is death to a bitter life, unending sleep to constant illness.	17 Mejor es la muerte que una vida amarga, el descanso eterno que enfermedad permanente.
18 Dainties set before one who cannot eat are like the offerings placed before a tomb.	18 Manjares derramados sobre boca cerrada, eso son las ofrendas de alimentos puestas sobre una tumba.
19 What good is an offering to an idol that can neither taste nor smell?	19 ¿De qué le sirve el sacrificio a un ídolo? ¡ni lo comerá ni lo olerá! Así aquel a quien persigue el Señor,
20 So it is with the afflicted man who groans at the good things his eyes behold!	20 que mira con sus ojos y gime. Escomo un eunuco que oprime a una virgen y gime.
21 Do not give in to sadness, torment not yourself with brooding;	21 No entregues tu alma a la tristeza, ni te atormentes a ti mismo con tus cavilaciones.
22 Gladness of heart is the very life of man, cheerfulness prolongs his days.	22 La alegría de corazón es la vida del hombre, el regocijo del varón, prolongación de sus días.
23 Distract yourself, renew your courage, drive resentment far away from you; For worry has brought death to many, nor is there aught to be gained from resentment.	23 Engaña tu alma y consuela tu corazón, echa lejos de ti la tristeza; que la tristeza perdió a muchos, y no hay en ella utilidad.
24 Envy and anger shorten one's life, worry brings on premature old age.	24 Envidia y malhumor los días acortan, las preocupaciones traen la vejez antes de tiempo.
25 One who is cheerful and gay while at table benefits from his food.	25 Un corazón radiante viene bien en las comidas, se preocupa de lo que come.
