1 He who loves his son chastises him often, that he may be his joy when he grows up.	1 Celui qui aime son fils ne lui épargne pas le fouet, plus tard il trouvera en lui sa joie.
2 He who disciplines his son will benefit from him, and boast of him among his intimates.	2 Qui élève bien son fils y trouvera des satisfactions, il en sera fier devant ses proches.
3 He who educates his son makes his enemy jealous, and shows his delight in him among his friends.	3 Celui qui instruit son fils rendra jaloux son ennemi; il s’en réjouira devant ses amis.
4 At the father's death, he will seem not dead, since he leaves after him one like himself,	4 Quand ce père disparaît, c’est comme s’il n’était pas mort, car il laisse après lui un autre lui-même.
5 Whom he looks upon through life with joy, and even in death, without regret:	5 Durant sa vie, c’était son bonheur de le voir; quand vient la mort il n’a pas de chagrin.
6 The avenger he leaves against his foes, and the one to repay his friends with kindness.	6 Car il laisse, face à ses ennemis, celui qui fera justice, et pour ses amis, celui qui leur montrera de la reconnaissance.
7 He who spoils his son will have wounds to bandage, and will quake inwardly at every outcry.	7 Celui qui gâte son fils devra panser ses blessures; au moindre de ses cris il sera retourné.
8 A colt untamed turns out stubborn; a son left to himself grows up unruly.	8 Un cheval indompté devient impossible, un fils laissé à lui-même devient intraitable.
9 Pamper your child and he will be a terror for you, indulge him and he will bring you grief.	9 Tu veux choyer ton enfant? un jour il te fera peur; folâtre avec lui, il te causera du chagrin.
10 Share not in his frivolity lest you share in his sorrow, when finally your teeth are clenched in remorse.	10 Ne ris pas avec lui, si tu ne veux pas un jour t’affliger avec lui et finalement grincer des dents.
11 Give him not his own way in his youth, and close not your eyes to his follies.	11 Ne lui laisse pas la bride sur le cou dans sa jeunesse,
12 Bend him to the yoke when he is young, thrash his sides while he is still small, Lest he become stubborn, disobey you, and leave you disconsolate.	12 Malmène lui les côtes quand il est petit, de peur qu’il ne s’obstine et se rebelle.
13 Discipline your son, make heavy his yoke, lest his folly humiliate you.	13 Éduque bien ton fils, travaille-le, ou sinon son inconduite se retournera contre toi.
14 Better a poor man strong and robust, than a rich man with wasted frame.	14 Mieux vaut un pauvre en bonne santé et vigoureux qu’un riche éprouvé dans son corps.
15 More precious than gold is health and well-being, contentment of spirit than coral.	15 La santé et une bonne constitution valent mieux que tout l’or du monde, et un corps robuste, qu’une immense fortune.
16 No treasure greater than a healthy body; no happiness, than a joyful heart!	16 Il n’y a pas de plus grande richesse que la santé du corps, il n’y a pas de plaisir supérieur à la joie de vivre.
17 Preferable is death to a bitter life, unending sleep to constant illness.	17 Mieux vaut la mort qu’une vie de misères, et le repos éternel qu’une maladie tenace.
18 Dainties set before one who cannot eat are like the offerings placed before a tomb.	18 Déposer sur les tombes des offrandes de nourriture, c’est présenter de bonnes choses à une bouche fermée;
19 What good is an offering to an idol that can neither taste nor smell?	19 de même l’offrande faite à une idole: à quoi bon, puisqu’elle ne mange ni ne sent rien? Ainsi en est-il de l’homme que le Seigneur poursuit:
20 So it is with the afflicted man who groans at the good things his eyes behold!	20 il voit la nourriture et il soupire; il est comme l’homme châtré qui enlace une jeune fille et gémit.
21 Do not give in to sadness, torment not yourself with brooding;	21 Ne te laisse pas aller à la tristesse, ne te tourmente pas au sujet de ton avenir.
22 Gladness of heart is the very life of man, cheerfulness prolongs his days.	22 Un cœur joyeux, voilà ce qui maintient l’homme en vie; c’est la gaieté qui prolonge ses jours.
23 Distract yourself, renew your courage, drive resentment far away from you; For worry has brought death to many, nor is there aught to be gained from resentment.	23 Allons! Divertis-toi et console ton cœur; chasse la tristesse loin de toi, car la tristesse en a perdu beaucoup et elle ne sert absolument à rien.
24 Envy and anger shorten one's life, worry brings on premature old age.	24 La jalousie et la fureur abrègent la vie, les soucis font vieillir avant l’âge.
25 One who is cheerful and gay while at table benefits from his food.	25 Qui a le cœur joyeux a bon appétit; ce qu’il mange lui profite.
