Sirach 18

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	JERUSALEM
1 The Eternal is the judge of all things without exception; the LORD alone is just.	1 Celui qui vit éternellement a créé tout ensemble.
2 Whom has he made equal to describing his works, and who can probe his mighty deeds?	2 Le Seigneur seul sera proclamé juste.
3 Who can measure his majestic power, or exhaust the tale of his mercies?
4 One cannot lessen, nor increase, nor penetrate the wonders of the LORD.	4 A personne il n'a donné le pouvoir d'annoncer ses oeuvres et qui découvrira ses merveilles?
5 When a man ends he is only beginning, and when he stops he is still bewildered.	5 Qui pourra mesurer la puissance de sa majesté et qui pourra en outre raconter sesmiséricordes?
6 What is man, of what worth is he? the good, the evil in him, what are these?	6 On n'y peut rien retrancher et rien ajouter, et l'on ne peut découvrir les merveilles duSeigneur.
7 The sum of a man's days is great if it reaches a hundred years:	7 Quand un homme a fini, c'est alors qu'il commence, et quand il s'arrête il est toutdéconcerté.
8 Like a drop of sea water, like a grain of sand, so are these few years among the days of eternity.	8 Qu'est-ce que l'homme? A quoi sert-il? Quel est son bien et quel est son mal?
9 That is why the LORD is patient with men and showers upon them his mercy.	9 La durée de sa vie: cent ans tout au plus.
10 He sees and understands that their death is grievous, and so he forgives them all the more.	10 Une goutte d'eau tirée de la mer, un grain de sable, telles sont ces quelques années auprèsde l'éternité.
11 Man may be merciful to his fellow man, but the LORD'S mercy reaches all flesh,	11 C'est pourquoi le Seigneur use avec eux de patience et répand sur eux sa miséricorde.
12 Reproving, admonishing, teaching, as a shepherd guides his flock;	12 Il voit, il sait combien leur fin est misérable, c'est pourquoi il a multiplié son pardon.
13 Merciful to those who accept his guidance, who are diligent in his precepts.	13 La pitié de l'homme est pour son prochain, mais la pitié du Seigneur est pour toute chair: ilreprend, il corrige, il enseigne, il ramène, tel le berger, son troupeau.
14 My son, to your charity add no reproach, nor spoil any gift by harsh words.	14 Il a pitié de ceux qui trouvent la discipline et qui cherchent avec zèle ses jugements.
15 Like dew that abates a burning wind, so does a word improve a gift.	15 Mon fils, n'assaisonne pas de blâme tes bienfaits, ni tous tes cadeaux de paroles chagrines.
16 Sometimes the word means more than the gift; both are offered by a kindly man.	16 La rosée ne calme-t-elle pas la chaleur? Ainsi la parole vaut mieux que le cadeau.
17 Only a fool upbraids before giving; a grudging gift wears out the expectant eyes.	17 Certes, une parole ne vaut-elle pas mieux qu'un riche présent? Mais l'homme charitableunit les deux.
18 Be informed before speaking; before sickness prepare the cure.	18 L'insensé ne donne rien et fait affront, et le don de l'envieux brûle les yeux.
19 Before you are judged, seek merit for yourself, and at the time of visitation you will have a ransom.	19 Avant de parler, instruis-toi, avant d'être malade, soigne-toi.
20 Before you have fallen, humble yourself; when you have sinned, show repentance.	20 Avant le jugement éprouve-toi, au jour de la visite tu seras acquitté.
21 Delay not to forsake sins, neglect it not till you are in distress.	21 Humilie-toi avant de tomber malade, quand tu as péché montre ton repentir.
22 Let nothing prevent the prompt payment of your vows; wait not to fulfill them when you are dying.	22 Que rien ne t'empêche d'accomplir un voeu en temps voulu, n'attends pas la mort pour temettre en règle.
23 Before making a vow have the means to fulfill it; be not one who tries the LORD.	23 Avant de faire un voeu, prépare-toi et ne sois pas comme un homme qui tente le Seigneur.
24 Think of wrath and the day of death, the time of vengeance when he will hide his face.	24 Pense à la colère des derniers jours, à l'heure de la vengeance, quand Dieu détourne saface.
25 Remember the time of hunger in the time of plenty, poverty and want in the day of wealth.	25 Quand tu es dans l'abondance songe à la disette, à la pauvreté et à la misère quand tu esriche.
26 Between morning and evening the weather changes; before the LORD all things are fleeting.	26 Entre matin et soir le temps s'écoule, tout passe vite devant le Seigneur.
27 A wise man is circumspect in all things; when sin is rife he keeps himself from wrongdoing.	27 En toutes choses le sage est sur ses gardes, aux jours de péché il évite l'offense.
28 Any learned man should make wisdom known, and he who attains to her should declare her praise;	28 Tout homme sensé reconnaît la sagesse; à qui l'a trouvée il fait son compliment.
29 Those trained in her words must show their wisdom, dispensing sound proverbs like life-giving waters.	29 Des hommes intelligents et diserts ont cultivé, eux aussi, la sagesse et se sont épanchés enmaximes excellentes.
30 Go not after your lusts, but keep your desires in check.	30 Ne te laisse pas entraîner par tes passions et refrène tes désirs.
31 If you satisfy your lustful appetites they will make you the sport of your enemies.	31 Si tu t'accordes la satisfaction de tes appétits, tu fais la risée de tes ennemis.
32 Have no joy in the pleasures of a moment which bring on poverty redoubled;	32 Ne te complais pas dans une existence voluptueuse, ne te lie pas à une telle société.
33 Become not a glutton and a winebibber with nothing in your purse.	33 Ne t'appauvris pas en festoyant avec de l'argent emprunté, quand tu n'as pas un sou enpoche.
