Sirach 18

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 The Eternal is the judge of all things without exception; the LORD alone is just.	1 El que vive para siempre creó todas las cosas por igual;
2 Whom has he made equal to describing his works, and who can probe his mighty deeds?	2 sólo el Señor será hallado justo y no hay otro fuera de él.
3 Who can measure his majestic power, or exhaust the tale of his mercies?	3 El gobierna el mundo con la palma de la mano y todo obedece a su voluntad, ya que él, por su poder, es el Rey de todas las cosas y separa las sagradas de las profanas.
4 One cannot lessen, nor increase, nor penetrate the wonders of the LORD.	4 A nadie le dio el poder de anunciar sus obras: ¿quién rastreará su grandeza?
5 When a man ends he is only beginning, and when he stops he is still bewildered.	5 ¿Quién podrá medir la magnitud de su fuerza y quién pretenderá narrar sus misericordias?
6 What is man, of what worth is he? the good, the evil in him, what are these?	6 No hay nada que quitar, nada que añadir, y es imposible rastrear las maravillas del Señor.
7 The sum of a man's days is great if it reaches a hundred years:	7 Cuando el hombre llega al fin, está sólo al comienzo; cuando se detiene, no sale de su estupor.
8 Like a drop of sea water, like a grain of sand, so are these few years among the days of eternity.	8 ¿Qué es el hombre? ¿Para qué sirve? ¿Cuál es su bien y cuál es su mal?
9 That is why the LORD is patient with men and showers upon them his mercy.	9 La vida de un hombre dura cien años a lo más:
10 He sees and understands that their death is grievous, and so he forgives them all the more.	10 como una gota del mar y como un grano de arena, son sus pocos años frente a la eternidad.
11 Man may be merciful to his fellow man, but the LORD'S mercy reaches all flesh,	11 Por eso el Señor es paciente con ellos y derrama sobre ellos su misericordia.
12 Reproving, admonishing, teaching, as a shepherd guides his flock;	12 El ve y conoce qué miserable es su fin, y por eso multiplica su perdón.
13 Merciful to those who accept his guidance, who are diligent in his precepts.	13 El hombre sólo tiene misericordia de su prójimo, pero el Señor es misericordioso con todos los vivientes. El reprende, corrige y enseña, y los hace volver como el pastor a su rebaño.
14 My son, to your charity add no reproach, nor spoil any gift by harsh words.	14 El tiene misericordia con los que aceptan la instrucción y está siempre dispuestos a cumplir sus decretos.
15 Like dew that abates a burning wind, so does a word improve a gift.	15 Hijo mío, no eches en cara los beneficios que haces ni acompañes tus dones con palabras ofensivas.
16 Sometimes the word means more than the gift; both are offered by a kindly man.	16 ¿No calma el rocío el calor ardiente? Así, una buena palabra puede más que un regalo.
17 Only a fool upbraids before giving; a grudging gift wears out the expectant eyes.	17 ¿Acaso no vale más una palabra que un obsequio? Pero el hombre caritativo sabe unir las dos cosas.
18 Be informed before speaking; before sickness prepare the cure.	18 El necio reprende sin ningún miramiento y el don del avaro hace correr las lágrimas.
19 Before you are judged, seek merit for yourself, and at the time of visitation you will have a ransom.	19 Antes de hablar, instrúyete, y cuídate antes de caer enfermo.
20 Before you have fallen, humble yourself; when you have sinned, show repentance.	20 Antes de juzgar, examínate a ti mismo, y hallarás perdón cuando el Señor te visite.
21 Delay not to forsake sins, neglect it not till you are in distress.	21 Humíllate antes de caer enfermo y arrepiéntete apenas hayas pecado.
22 Let nothing prevent the prompt payment of your vows; wait not to fulfill them when you are dying.	22 Que nada te impida cumplir tus votos en el momento debido, y no esperes hasta la muerte para estar en regla.
23 Before making a vow have the means to fulfill it; be not one who tries the LORD.	23 Antes de hacer un voto, prepárate a cumplirlo, y no seas como un hombre que tienta al Señor.
24 Think of wrath and the day of death, the time of vengeance when he will hide his face.	24 Recuerda la ira de los últimos días y el tiempo del castigo, cuando el Señor apartará su rostro.
25 Remember the time of hunger in the time of plenty, poverty and want in the day of wealth.	25 En tiempo de abundancia, recuerda el tiempo de hambre, y en los días de riqueza, la pobreza y la penuria.
26 Between morning and evening the weather changes; before the LORD all things are fleeting.	26 De la mañana a la tarde, el tiempo cambia, y todo pasa rápidamente delante del Señor.
27 A wise man is circumspect in all things; when sin is rife he keeps himself from wrongdoing.	27 El hombre sabio está siempre alerta, y en la ocasión de pecado, se cuida para no faltar.
28 Any learned man should make wisdom known, and he who attains to her should declare her praise;	28 Todo hombre prudente conoce la sabiduría y rinde homenaje al que la encuentra.
29 Those trained in her words must show their wisdom, dispensing sound proverbs like life-giving waters.	29 Los que hablan con sensatez son sabios ellos mismos y derraman como lluvia proverbios acertados
30 Go not after your lusts, but keep your desires in check.	30 No te dejes guiar por tus pasiones, sino refrena tus deseos.
31 If you satisfy your lustful appetites they will make you the sport of your enemies.	31 Si cedes a los impulsos de la pasión, ella hará de ti la irrisión de tus enemigos.
32 Have no joy in the pleasures of a moment which bring on poverty redoubled;	32 Que tu alegría no consista en darte todos los gustos ni te endeudes para pagar lo que ellos cuestan.
33 Become not a glutton and a winebibber with nothing in your purse.	33 No te empobrezcas yendo de fiesta con dinero prestado, cuando no tienes nada en el bolsillo.
