Luke 23

1 And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.	1 Then the whole assembly of them arose and brought him before Pilate.
2 And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.	2 They brought charges against him, saying, "We found this man misleading our people; he opposes the payment of taxes to Caesar and maintains that he is the Messiah, a king."
3 And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.	3 Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He said to him in reply, "You say so."
4 Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.	4 Pilate then addressed the chief priests and the crowds, "I find this man not guilty."
5 And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.	5 But they were adamant and said, "He is inciting the people with his teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to here."
6 When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.	6 On hearing this Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean;
7 And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.	7 and upon learning that he was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod who was in Jerusalem at that time.
8 And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.	8 Herod was very glad to see Jesus; he had been wanting to see him for a long time, for he had heard about him and had been hoping to see him perform some sign.
9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.	9 He questioned him at length, but he gave him no answer.
10 And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.	10 The chief priests and scribes, meanwhile, stood by accusing him harshly.
11 And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.	11 (Even) Herod and his soldiers treated him contemptuously and mocked him, and after clothing him in resplendent garb, he sent him back to Pilate.
12 And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.	12 Herod and Pilate became friends that very day, even though they had been enemies formerly.
13 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,	13 Pilate then summoned the chief priests, the rulers, and the people
14 Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:	14 and said to them, "You brought this man to me and accused him of inciting the people to revolt. I have conducted my investigation in your presence and have not found this man guilty of the charges you have brought against him,
15 No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.	15 nor did Herod, for he sent him back to us. So no capital crime has been committed by him.
16 I will therefore chastise him, and release him.	16 Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him."
17 (For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)	17
18 And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:	18 But all together they shouted out, "Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us."
19 (Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)	19 (Now Barabbas had been imprisoned for a rebellion that had taken place in the city and for murder.)
20 Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.	20 Again Pilate addressed them, still wishing to release Jesus,
21 But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.	21 but they continued their shouting, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"
22 And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.	22 Pilate addressed them a third time, "What evil has this man done? I found him guilty of no capital crime. Therefore I shall have him flogged and then release him."
23 And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.	23 With loud shouts, however, they persisted in calling for his crucifixion, and their voices prevailed.
24 And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.	24 The verdict of Pilate was that their demand should be granted.
25 And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.	25 So he released the man who had been imprisoned for rebellion and murder, for whom they asked, and he handed Jesus over to them to deal with as they wished.
26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.	26 As they led him away they took hold of a certain Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country; and after laying the cross on him, they made him carry it behind Jesus.
27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.	27 A large crowd of people followed Jesus, including many women who mourned and lamented him.
28 But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.	28 Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep instead for yourselves and for your children,
29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.	29 for indeed, the days are coming when people will say, 'Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed.'
30 Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.	30 At that time people will say to the mountains, 'Fall upon us!' and to the hills, 'Cover us!'
31 For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?	31 for if these things are done when the wood is green what will happen when it is dry?"
32 And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.	32 Now two others, both criminals, were led away with him to be executed.
33 And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.	33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him and the criminals there, one on his right, the other on his left.
34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.	34 [Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do."] They divided his garments by casting lots.
35 And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.	35 The people stood by and watched; the rulers, meanwhile, sneered at him and said, "He saved others, let him save himself if he is the chosen one, the Messiah of God."
36 And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,	36 Even the soldiers jeered at him. As they approached to offer him wine
37 And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.	37 they called out, "If you are King of the Jews, save yourself."
38 And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.	38 Above him there was an inscription that read, "This is the King of the Jews."
39 And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.	39 Now one of the criminals hanging there reviled Jesus, saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us."
40 But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?	40 The other, however, rebuking him, said in reply, "Have you no fear of God, for you are subject to the same condemnation?
41 And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.	41 And indeed, we have been condemned justly, for the sentence we received corresponds to our crimes, but this man has done nothing criminal."
42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.	42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.	43 He replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
44 And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.	44 It was now about noon and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon
45 And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.	45 because of an eclipse of the sun. Then the veil of the temple was torn down the middle.
46 And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.	46 Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit"; and when he had said this he breathed his last.
47 Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.	47 The centurion who witnessed what had happened glorified God and said, "This man was innocent beyond doubt."
48 And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.	48 When all the people who had gathered for this spectacle saw what had happened, they returned home beating their breasts;
49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.	49 but all his acquaintances stood at a distance, including the women who had followed him from Galilee and saw these events.
50 And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counseller; and he was a good man, and a just:	50 Now there was a virtuous and righteous man named Joseph who, though he was a member of the council,
51 (The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.	51 had not consented to their plan of action. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea and was awaiting the kingdom of God.
52 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.	52 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.	53 After he had taken the body down, he wrapped it in a linen cloth and laid him in a rock-hewn tomb in which no one had yet been buried.
54 And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.	54 It was the day of preparation, and the sabbath was about to begin.
55 And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.	55 The women who had come from Galilee with him followed behind, and when they had seen the tomb and the way in which his body was laid in it,
56 And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.	56 they returned and prepared spices and perfumed oils. Then they rested on the sabbath according to the commandment.
