DOUAI-RHEIMSNEW JERUSALEM
And the people marched from Haseroth, and pitched their tents in the desert of Pharan.1 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
And there the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:2 'Send out men, one from each tribe, to reconnoitre the land of Canaan which I am giving theIsraelites. Each of them is to be a leading man of the tribe.'
Send men to view the land of Chanaan, which I will give to the children of Israel, one of every tribe, of the rulers.3 At Yahweh's order, Moses sent them from the desert of Paran. All of them were leading men of Israel.
Moses did what the Lord had commanded, sending from the desert of Pharan, principal men, whose names are these:4 These were their names: For the tribe of Reuben, Shammua son of Zaccur:
Of the tribe of Ruben, Sammua the son of Zechur.5 for the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori;
Of the tribe of Simeon, Saphat the son of Hurl.6 for the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh;
Of the tribe of Juda, Caleb the son of Jephone.7 for the tribe of of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph;
Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph.8 for the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea son of Nun;
Of the tribe of Ephraim, Osee the son of Nun.9 for the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu;
Of the tribe of Benjamin, Phalti the son of Raphu.10 for the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi;
Of the tribe of Zabulon, Geddiel the son of Sodi.11 for the tribe of Joseph, for the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi;
Of the tribe of Joseph, of the sceptre of Manasses, Gaddi the son of Susi.12 for the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemal i;
Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli.13 for the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael;
Of the tribe of Aser, Sthur the son of Michael.14 for the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi;
Of the tribe of Nephtali, Nahabi the son of Vapsi.15 for the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Machi.
Of the tribe of Gad, Guel the son of Machi.16 Such were the names of the men whom Moses sent to reconnoitre the country. Moses then gaveHoshea son of Nun the name Joshua.
These are the names of the men, whom Moses sent to view the land: and he called Osee the son of Nun, Josue.17 Moses sent them to reconnoitre the land of Canaan, 'Go up into the Negeb,' he said, 'then go up intothe highlands.
And Moses sent them to view the land of Chanaan, and said to them: Go you up by the south side. And when you shall come to the mountains,18 See what sort of country it is, and what sort of people the inhabitants are, whether they are strong orweak, few or many,
View the land, of what sort it is: and the people that are the inhabitants thereof, whether they be strong or weak: few in number or many:19 what sort of land they live on, whether it is good or poor; what sort of towns they live in, whether theyare open or fortified;
The land itself, whether it be good or bad: what manner of cities, walled or without walls:20 what sort of land it is, fertile or barren, wooded or open. Be bold, and bring back some of thecountry's produce.' It was the season for early grapes.
The ground, fat or barren, woody or without trees. Be of good courage, and bring us of the fruits of the land. Now it was the time when the first ripe grapes are fit to be eaten.21 They went up and reconnoitred the country from the desert of Zin to Rehob, the Pass of Hamath.
And when they were gone up, they viewed the land from the desert of Sin, unto Rohob as you enter into Emath.22 They went up by way of the Negeb as far as Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, theAnakim, lived. (Hebron was founded seven years before Tanis in Egypt.)
And they went up at the south side, and came to Hebron, where were Achiman and Sisai and Tholmai the sons of Enac. For Hebron was built seven years before Tanis the city of Egypt.23 Reaching the Vale of Eshcol, there they lopped off a vine branch with a cluster of grapes, which twoof them carried away on a pole, as wel as pomegranates and figs.
And going forward as far as the torrent of the cluster of grapes, they cut off a branch with its cluster of grapes, which two men carried upon a lever. They took also of the pomegranates and of the figs of that place:24 This place was called the Vale of Eshcol after the cluster which the Israelites cut there.
Which was called Nehelescol, that is to say, the torrent of the cluster of grapes, because from thence the children of Israel had carried a cluster of grapes.25 After forty days they returned from reconnoitring the country.
And they that went to spy out the land returned after forty days, having gone round all the country,26 Making their way to Moses, Aaron and the whole community of Israel, in the desert of Paran, atKadesh, they made their report to them and the whole community, and displayed the country's produce.
And came to Moses and Aaron and to all the assembly of the children of Israel to the desert of Pharan, which is in Cades. And speaking to them and to all the multitude, they shewed them the fruits of the land:27 This was the report they gave: 'We made our way into the country where you sent us. It does indeedflow with milk and honey; here is what it produces.
And they related and said: We came into the land to which thou sentest us, which in very deed floweth with milk and honey as may be known by these fruits:28 At the same time, its inhabitants are a powerful people; the towns are fortified and very big; yes, andwe saw the Anakim there.
But it hath very strong inhabitants, and the cities are great and walled. We saw there the race of Enac.29 The Amalekites occupy the Negeb area, the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites the highlands, and theCanaanites the sea coast and the banks of the Jordan.'
Amalec dwelleth in the south, the Hethite and the Jebusite and the Amorrhite in the mountains: but the Chanaanite abideth by the sea and near the streams of the Jordan.30 Caleb called the people round Moses to silence and then said, 'We must march in immediately andtake it; we are certainly able to conquer it.'
In the mean time Caleb, to still the murmuring of the people that rose against Moses, said: Let us go up and possess the land, for we shall be able to conquer it.31 But the men who had been with him said, 'We cannot attack these people; they are stronger than weare.'
But the others, that had been with him, said: No, we are not able to go up to this people, because they are stronger than we.32 And they began disparaging to the Israelites the country they had reconnoitred, saying, 'The countrywe have been to reconnoitre is a country that devours its inhabitants. Al the people we saw there were ofenormous size.
And they spoke ill of the land, which they had viewed, before the children of Israel, saying: The land which we have viewed, devoureth its inhabitants: the people, that we beheld, are of a tall stature.33 We saw giants there too (the Anakim, descended from the Giants). We felt like grasshoppers, andso we seemed to them.'
There we saw certain monsters of the sons of Enac, of the giant kind: in comparison of whom, we seemed like locusts.
