Sirach 12

DOUAI-RHEIMS	JERUSALEM
1 If thou do good, know to whom thou dost it, and there shall be much thanks for thy good deeds.	1 Si tu fais le bien, sache à qui tu le fais et tes bienfaits ne seront pas perdus.
2 Do good to the just, and thou shalt find great recompense: and if not of him, assuredly of the Lord.	2 Fais le bien à un homme pieux, il te le rendra, sinon par lui-même, du moins par le Très-Haut.
3 For there is no good for him that is always occupied in evil, and that giveth no alms: for the Highest hateth sinners, and hath mercy on the penitent.	3 Pas de bienfaits à qui persévère dans le mal et se refuse à faire la charité.
4 Give to the merciful and uphold not the sinner: God will repay vengeance to the ungodly and to sinners, and keep them against the day of vengeance.	4 Donne à l'homme pieux et ne viens pas en aide au pécheur.
5 Give to the good, and receive not a sinner.	5 Fais le bien à qui est humble et ne donne pas à l'impie. Refuse-lui son pain, ne le lui donnepas, il en deviendrait plus fort que toi. Car tu serais payé au double en méchanceté pour tous les bienfaits dont tul'aurais gratifié.
6 Do good to the humble, and give not to the ungodly: hold back thy bread, and give it not to him, lest thereby he overmaster thee.	6 Car le Très-Haut lui-même a les pécheurs en horreur et aux impies il infligera une punition.
7 For thou shalt receive twice as much evil for all the good thou shalt have done to him: for the Highest also hateth sinners, and will repay vengeance to the ungodly.	7 Donne à l'homme bon, mais ne viens pas en aide au pécheur.
8 A friend shall not be known in prosperity, and an enemy shall not be hidden in adversity.	8 Dans la prospérité on ne peut reconnaître le véritable ami, et dans l'adversité l'ennemi nepeut se cacher.
9 In the prosperity of a man, his enemies are grieved: and a friend is known in his adversity.	9 Quand un homme est heureux, ses ennemis ont du chagrin; quand il est malheureux, mêmeson ami l'abandonne.
10 Never trust thy enemy: for as a brass pot his wickedness rusteth:	10 Ne te fie jamais à ton ennemi; de même que l'airain se rouille, ainsi fait sa méchanceté.
11 ,11Though he humble himself and go crouching, yet take good heed and beware of him.	11 Même s'il se fait humble et s'avance en courbant l'échine, veille sur toi-même et méfie-toide lui. Agis envers lui comme si tu polissais un miroir, sache que sa rouille ne tiendra pas jusqu'à la fin.
12 Set him not by thee, neither let him sit on thy right hand, lest he turn into thy place, and seek to take thy seat: and at the last thou acknowledge my words, and be pricked with my sayings.	12 Ne le mets pas près de toi, il pourrait te renverser et prendre ta place. Ne le fais pas asseoirà ta droite, il chercherait à te ravir ton siège, et finalement tu comprendrais mes paroles, tu te repentirais ensongeant à mon discours.
13 Who will pity an enchanter struck by a serpent, or any that come near wild beasts? so is it with him that keepeth company with a wicked man, and is involved in his sins.	13 Qui aurait pitié du charmeur que mord le serpent et de tous ceux qui affrontent les bêtesféroces?
14 For an hour he will abide with thee: but if thou begin to decline, he will not endure it.	14 Il en va de même de celui qui fait du pécheur son compagnon et qui prend part à sespéchés.
15 An enemy speaketh sweetly with his lips, but in his heart he lieth in wait, to throw thee into a pit.	15 Il reste quelque temps avec toi, mais, si tu chancelles, il ne se contient plus.
16 An enemy weepeth with his eyes: but if he find an opportunity he will not be satisfied with blood:	16 L'ennemi n'a que douceur sur les lèvres, mais dans son coeur il médite de te jeter dans lafosse. L'ennemi a des larmes dans les yeux, et s'il trouve l'occasion il ne se rassasiera pas de sang.
17 And if evils come upon thee, thou shalt find him there first.	17 Si le sort t'est contraire, tu le trouveras là avant toi, et sous prétexte de t'aider il te saisira letalon.
18 An enemy hath tears in his eyes, and while he pretendeth to help thee, will undermine thy feet.	18 Il hochera la tête et battra des mains, il ne fera que murmurer et changer de visage.
19 He will shake his head, and clap his hands, and whisper much, and change his countenance.
