Proverbs 26

DOUAI-RHEIMS	JERUSALEM
1 As snow in summer, and rain in harvest, so glory is not seemly for a fool.	1 Pas plus que la neige à l'été ou la pluie à la moisson, les honneurs ne conviennent au sot.
2 As a bird flying to other places, and a sparrow going here or there: so a curse uttered without cause shall come upon a man.	2 Le passereau s'échappe, l'hirondelle s'envole, ainsi la malédiction gratuite n'atteint pas son but.
3 A whip for a horse, and a snaffle for an ass, and a rod for the back of fools.	3 Le fouet pour le cheval, la bride pour l'âne, pour l'échine des sots, le bâton.
4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou be made like him.	4 Ne répond pas à l'insensé selon sa folie, de peur de lui devenir semblable, toi aussi.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he imagine himself to be wise.	5 Réponds à l'insensé selon sa folie, de peur qu'il ne soit sage à ses propres yeux.
6 He that sendeth words by a foolish messenger, is lame of feet and drinketh iniquity.	6 Il se mutile, il s'abreuve de violence, celui qui envoie un message par l'entremise d'un sot.
7 As a lame man hath fair legs in vain: so a parable is unseemly in the mouth of fools.	7 Mal assurées, les jambes du boiteux; ainsi un proverbe dans la bouche des sots.
8 As he that casteth a stone into the heap of Mercury: so is he that giveth honour to a fool.	8 C'est attacher la pierre à la fronde que de rendre honneur à un sot.
9 As if a thorn should grow in the hand of a drunkard: so is a parable in the mouth of fools.	9 Une ronce pousse dans la main d'un ivrogne comme un proverbe dans la bouche d'un sot.
10 Judgment determineth causes: and he that putteth a fool to silence, appeaseth anger.	10 Un archer blessant tout le monde: tel est celui qui embauche le sot et l'ivrogne qui passent.
11 As a dog that returneth to his vomit, so is the fool that repeateth his folly.	11 Comme le chien revient à son vomissement, le sot retourne à sa folie.
12 Hast thou seen a man wise in his own conceit? there shall be more hope of a fool than of him.	12 Tu vois un homme sage à ses propres yeux? Il y a plus à espérer d'un insensé.
13 The slothful man saith: There is a lion in the way, and a lioness in the roads.	13 Le paresseux dit: "Un fauve sur le chemin! un lion par les rues!"
14 As the door turneth upon its hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed.	14 La porte tourne sur ses gonds, et sur son lit le paresseux.
15 The slothful hideth his hand under his armpit, and it grieveth him to turn it to his mouth.	15 Le paresseux plonge la main dans le plat: la ramener à sa bouche le fatigue!
16 The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit, than seven men that speak sentences.	16 Le paresseux est plus sage à ses propres yeux que sept personnes répondant avec tact.
17 As he that taketh a dog by the ears, so is he that passeth by in anger, and meddleth with another man's quarrel.	17 Il prend par les oreilles un chien qui passe, celui qui s'immisce dans une querelle étrangère.
18 As he is guilty that shooteth arrows, and lances unto death :	18 Un homme pris de folie qui lance des traits enflammés, des flèches et la mort:
19 So is the man that hurteth his friend deceitfully: and when he is taken, saith: I did it in jest.	19 tel est l'homme qui ment à son compagnon, puis dit: "N'était-ce pas pour plaisanter?"
20 When the wood faileth, the fire shall go out: and when the talebearer is taken away, contentions shall cease.	20 Faute de bois, le feu s'éteint, faute de calomniateur, la querelle s'apaise.
21 As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire, so an angry man stirreth up strife.	21 Du charbon sur les braises, du bois sur le feu, tel est l'homme querelleur pour attiser lesdisputes.
22 The words of a talebearer are as it were simple, but they reach to the innermost parts of the belly.	22 Les dires du calomniateur sont de friands morceaux qui descendent jusqu'au fond des entrailles.
23 Swelling lips joined with a corrupt heart, are like an earthen vessel adorned with silver dross.	23 De l'argent non purifié appliqué sur de l'argile: tels sont lèvres brûlantes et coeur mauvais.
24 An enemy is known by his lips, when in his heart he entertaineth deceit.	24 Celui qui hait donne le change par ses propos, mais en son sein gît la tromperie;
25 When he shall speak low, trust him not: because there are seven mischiefs in his heart.	25 s'il prend un ton cauteleux, ne t'y fie pas, car en son coeur il y a sept abominations.
26 He that covereth hatred deceitfully, his malice shall be laid open in the public assembly.	26 La haine peut s'envelopper de ruse, elle révélera sa méchanceté dans l'assemblée.
27 He that diggeth a pit, shall fall into it: and he that rolleth a stone, it shall return to him.	27 Qui creuse une fosse y tombe, qui roule une roche, elle revient sur lui.
28 A deceitful tongue loveth not truth: and a slippery mouth worketh ruin.	28 La langue menteuse hait ses victimes, la bouche enjôleuse provoque la chute.
