1 Unto the end, for Idithun himself, a canticle of David.	1 [Für den Chormeister. Von Jedutun. Ein Psalm Davids.]
2 I said: I will take heed to my ways : that I sin not with my tongue. I have set guard to my mouth, when the sinner stood against me.	2 Ich sagte: Ich will auf meine Wege achten, damit ich nicht sündige mit meiner Zunge. Ich lege meinem Mund einen Zaum an, solange der Frevler vor mir steht.
3 I was dumb, and was humbled, and kept silence from good things : and my sorrow was renewed.	3 So blieb ich stumm und still; ich schwieg, vom Glück verlassen, doch mein Schmerz war aufgerührt.
4 My heart grew hot within me : and in my meditation a fire shall flame out.	4 Heiß wurde mir das Herz in der Brust, bei meinem Grübeln entbrannte ein Feuer; da musste ich reden:
5 I spoke with my tongue : O Lord, make me know my end. And what is the number of my days : that I may know what is wanting to me.	5 Herr, tu mir mein Ende kund und die Zahl meiner Tage! Lass mich erkennen, wie sehr ich vergänglich bin!
6 Behold thou hast made my days measurable : and my substance is as nothing before thee. And indeed all things are vanity : every man living.	6 Du machtest meine Tage nur eine Spanne lang, meine Lebenszeit ist vor dir wie ein Nichts. Ein Hauch nur ist jeder Mensch. [Sela]
7 Surely man passeth as an image : yea, and he is disquieted in vain. He storeth up : and he knoweth not for whom he shall gather these things.	7 Nur wie ein Schatten geht der Mensch einher, um ein Nichts macht er Lärm. Er rafft zusammen und weiß nicht, wer es einheimst.
8 And now what is my hope? is it not the Lord? and my substance is with thee.	8 Und nun, Herr, worauf soll ich hoffen? Auf dich allein will ich harren.
9 Deliver thou me from all my iniquities : thou hast made me a reproach to the fool.	9 Entreiß mich allen, die mir Unrecht tun, und überlass mich nicht dem Spott der Toren!
10 I was dumb, and I opened not my mouth, because thou hast done it.	10 Ich bin verstummt, ich tue den Mund nicht mehr auf. Denn so hast du es gefügt.
11 Remove thy scourges from me. The strength of thy hand hath made me faint in rebukes:	11 Nimm deine Plage weg von mir! Unter der Wucht deiner Hand vergehe ich.
12 thou hast corrected man for iniquity. And thou hast made his soul to waste away like a spider : surely in vain is any man disquieted.	12 Du strafst und züchtigst den Mann wegen seiner Schuld, du zerstörst seine Anmut wie Motten das Kleid, ein Hauch nur ist jeder Mensch. [Sela]
13 Hear my prayer, O Lord, and my supplication : give ear to my tears. Be not silent : for I am a stranger with thee, and a sojourner as all my fathers were.	13 Hör mein Gebet, Herr, vernimm mein Schreien, schweig nicht zu meinen Tränen! Denn ich bin nur ein Gast bei dir, ein Fremdling wie all meine Väter.
14 O forgive me, that I may be refreshed, before I go hence, and be no more.	14 Wende dein strafendes Auge ab von mir, sodass ich heiter blicken kann, bevor ich dahinfahre und nicht mehr da bin.
