1 El que ama a su hijo lo castiga asiduamente, para poder alegrarse de él en el futuro. | 1 He that loveth his son, frequently chastiseth him, that he may rejoice in his latter end, and not grope after the doors of his neighbours. |
2 El que educa bien a su hijo encontrará satisfacción en él y se sentirá orgulloso entre sus conocidos. | 2 He that instructeth his son shall be praised in him, and shall glory in him in the midst of them of his household. |
3 El que instruye a su hijo dará envidia a su enemigo y se sentirá dichoso delante de sus amigos, | 3 He that teacheth his son, maketh his enemy jealous, and in the midst of his friends he shall glory in him. |
4 Muere el padre, y es como si no muriera, porque deja detrás de sí a uno igual a él. | 4 His father is dead, and he is as if he were not dead: for he hath left one behind him that is like himself. |
5 Mientras vive, se alegra de verlo, y a su muerte, no siente ningún pesar: | 5 While he lived he saw and rejoiced in him: and when he died he was not sorrowful, neither was he confounded before his enemies. |
6 deja a alguien que lo vengará de sus enemigos y devolverá los favores a sus amigos. | 6 For he left behind him a defender of his house against his enemies, and one that will requite kindness to his friends. |
7 El que mima a su hijo vendará sus heridas y a cada grito que dé, se le conmoverán las entrañas. | 7 For the souls of his sons he shall bind up his wounds, and at every cry his bowels shall be troubled. |
8 Un caballo sin domar se vuelve reacio, y un hijo consentido se vuelve insolente. | |

10 No hagas bromas con él, para no sufrir con él ni rechinar tus dientes al final. | 10 Give thy son his way, and he shall make thee afraid: play with him, and he shall make thee sorrowful. |
11 No les des rienda suelta en su juventud, | 11 Laugh not with him, lest thou have sorrow, and at the last thy teeth be set on edge. |
12 pégale sin temor mientras es niño, no sea que se vuelva rebelde y te desobedezca. | 12 Give him not liberty in his youth, and wink not at his devices. |
13 Educa a tu hijo y fórmalo bien, para que no tengas que soportar su desvergüenza. | 13 Bow down his neck while he is young, and beat his sides while he is a child, lest he grow stubborn, and regard thee not, and so be a sorrow of heart to thee. |
14 Más vale pobre sano y vigoroso que rico lleno de achaques. | 14 Instruct thy son, and labour about him, lest his lewd behaviour be an offence to thee. |
15 La salud y el vigor valen más que todo el oro y el cuerpo robusto, más que una inmensa fortuna. | 15 Better is a poor man who is sound, and strong of constitution, than a rich man who is weak and afflicted with evils. |
16 No hay mejor riqueza que la salud del cuerpo ni mayor felicidad que la alegría del corazón. | 16 Health of the soul in holiness of justice, is better then all gold and silver: and a sound body, than immense revenues. |
17 Es preferible la muerte a una vida amarga y el descanso eterno a una enfermedad incurable. | 17 There is no riches above the riches of the health of the body: and there is no pleasure above the joy of the heart. |
18 Manjares derramados sobre una boca cerrada son los alimentos depositados sobre una tumba: | 18 Better is death than a bitter life: and everlasting rest, than continual sickness. |
19 ¿de qué le sirve al ídolo la ofrenda si no puede comer ni gustar? Así pasa con el hombre perseguido por el Señor: | 19 Good things that are hidden in a mouth that is shut, are as masses of meat set about a grave. |
20 mira con sus ojos y lanza un suspiro, como un eunuco cuando abraza a una virgen. | 20 What good shall an offering do to an idol? for it can neither eat, nor smell: |
21 No dejes que la tristeza se apodere de ti ni te atormentes con tus cavilaciones. | 21 So is he that is persecuted by the Lord, bearing the reward of his iniquity: |
22 Un corazón alegre es la vida del hombre y el gozo alarga el número de sus días. | 22 He seeth with his eyes, and groaneth, as an eunuch embracing a virgin, and sighing. |
23 Vive ilusionado y consuela tu corazón, y aparta lejos de ti la tristeza, porque la tristeza fue la perdición de muchos y no se saca de ella ningún provecho. | 23 Give not up thy soul to sadness, and afflict not thyself in thy own counsel. |
24 La envidia y la ira acortan la vida y las preocupaciones hacen envejecer antes de tiempo. | 24 The joyfulness of the heart, is the life of a man, and a never failing treasure of holiness: and the joy of a man is length of life. |
25 Un hombre de corazón alegre tiene buen apetito y lo que come le hace provecho. | 25 Have pity on thy own soul, pleasing God, and contain thyself: gather up thy heart in his holiness: and drive away sadness far from thee. |
| 26 For sadness hath killed many, and there is no profit in it. |
| 27 Envy and anger shorten a man's days, and pensiveness will bring old age before the time. |
