Proverbios 23

EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Si te sientas a la mesa con un señor, fíjate bien en lo que tienes delante;	1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;
2 clava un cuchillo en tu garganta, si tienes mucho apetito.	2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.
3 No ambiciones sus manjares, porque son un alimento engañoso.	3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.
4 No te afanes por enriquecerte, deja de pensar en eso.	4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.
5 Tus ojos vuelan hacia la riqueza, y ya no hay nada, porque ella se pone alas y vuela hacia el cielo como un águila.	5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.
6 No comas el pan del hombre malicioso ni codicies sus manjares,	6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.
7 porque él es en realidad como piensa dentro de sí: «Come y bebe», te dice, pero su corazón no está contigo.	7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.
8 El bocado que comiste, lo vomitarás, y habrás desperdiciado tus lindas palabras.	8 You wil spit out whatever you have eaten and find your compliments wasted.
9 No hables a los oídos de un insensato, porque despreciará el buen sentido de tus palabras.	9 Do not waste words on a fool, who wil not appreciate the shrewdness of your remarks.
10 No desplaces los linderos antiguos, ni te metas en los campos de los huérfanos,	10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,
11 porque su Vengador es poderoso y defenderá su causa contra ti.	11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.
12 Abre tu corazón a la instrucción y tus oídos a las palabras de la ciencia.	12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.
13 No mezquines la corrección a un niño: si lo golpeas con la vara, no morirá.	13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.
14 Tú lo golpearás con la vara, y librarás su vida del Abismo.	14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.
15 Hijo mío, si tu corazón es sabio, también se alegrará mi corazón:	15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,
16 mis entrañas se regocijarán, cuando tus labios hablen con rectitud.	16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.
17 Que tu corazón no envidie a los pecadores, sino que siempre tema al Señor.	17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;
18 Así, ciertamente, tendrás un porvenir y tu esperanza no quedará defraudada.	18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.
19 Escucha, hijo mío, y te harás sabio, y enderezarás tu corazón por el buen camino.	19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.
20 No te juntes con los borrachos ni con los que se hartan de carne,	20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;
21 porque el borracho y el glotón se empobrecen, y la modorra hace andar vestido con harapos.	21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.
22 Escucha a tu padre, que te engendró, y no desprecies a tu madre cuando sea vieja.	22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.
23 Adquiere la verdad y no la vendas, lo mismo que la sabiduría, la instrucción y la inteligencia.	23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.
24 El padre de un justo se llena de gozo, el que tiene un hijo sabio se alegra por él:	24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.
25 ¡que se alegren tu padre y tu madre y se llene de gozo la que te hizo nacer!	25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.
26 Hijo mío, préstame atención y acepta de buena gana mis caminos.	26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:
27 Porque la prostituta es una fosa profunda y la mujer extraña, un pozo estrecho:	27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.
28 también ella está al acecho como un ladrón y multiplica las traiciones entre los hombres.	28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.
29 ¿Para quién los lamentos? ¿Para quién los quejidos? ¿Para quién las querellas? ¿Para quién los suspiros? ¿Para quién las heridas sin motivo? ¿Para quién la mirada turbia?	29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?
30 Para los que se pasan bebiendo y van en busca de vino aromatizado.	30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.
31 No mires el vino: ¡qué rojo es! ¡Cómo centellea en la copa! ¡Cómo fluye suavemente!	31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!
32 Pero al fin muerde como una serpiente y pica como una víbora.	32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.
33 Tus ojos verán cosas extrañas, tu corazón hablará sin ton ni son;	33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.
34 serás como un hombre acostado en alta mar, acostado en la punta de un mástil.	34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.
35 «Me han golpeado, pero no me dolió; me han pegado, pero no me di cuenta. ¿Cuándo me despertaré? ¡Volveré a pedir más todavía!».	35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'
