EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Mi alma está asqueada de la vida, quiero dar libre curso a mi queja, expresaré toda mi amargura.	1 Since I have lost al taste for life, I shal give free rein to my complaining; I shal let my embittered soulspeak out.
2 Diré a Dios: «No me condenes, dame a conocer por qué me recriminas».	2 I shal say to God, 'Do not condemn me, tel me what your case is against me.
3 ¿Es un placer para ti oprimir, despreciar la obra de tus manos y favorecer el designio de los malvados?	3 Is it right for you to attack me, in contempt for what you yourself have made, thus abetting theschemes of the wicked?
4 ¿Acaso tienes ojos de carne? ¿Ves tú las cosas como las ven los hombres?	4 Are your eyes mere human eyes, do you see as human beings see?
5 ¿Son tus días como los de un mortal y tus años como los días de un hombre,	5 Are you mortal like human beings? do your years pass as human days pass?
6 para que estés al acecho de mi culpa y vayas en busca de mi pecado,	6 You, who enquire into my faults and investigate my sins,
7 aún sabiendo que no soy culpable y que nadie puede librar de tu mano?	7 you know very wel that I am innocent, and that no one can rescue me from your grasp.
8 Tus manos me modelaron y me hicieron, y luego, cambiando de parecer, me destruyes.	8 Your hands having shaped and created me, now you change your mind and mean to destroy me!
9 Acuérdate que me hiciste de la arcilla y que me harás retornar al polvo.	9 Having made me, remember, as though of clay, now you mean to turn me back into dust!
10 ¿Acaso no me derramaste como leche y me cuajaste como el queso?	10 Did you not pour me out like milk, and then let me thicken like curds,
11 Me revestiste de piel y de carne y me tejiste con huesos y tendones.	11 clothe me with skin and flesh, and weave me of bone and sinew?
12 Me diste la vida y me trataste con amor, y tu solicitud preservó mi aliento.	12 In your love you gave me life, and in your care watched over my every breath.
13 ¡Pero tú ocultabas alto en tu corazón, ahora comprendo lo que tenías pensado!	13 Yet, al the while, you had a secret plan: I know that you were biding your time
14 Si yo peco, tú me vigilas y no me absuelves de mi culpa.	14 to see if I should sin and then not acquit me of my faults.
15 Si soy culpable, ¡ay de mí! Si soy inocente, tampoco puedo alzar cabeza, saturado de ignominia, embriagado de aflicción.	15 Woe to me, if I am guilty; even if I am upright, I dare not lift my head, so overwhelmed with shameand drunk with pain am I!
16 Si me levanto, tú me cazas como un león y redoblas contra mi tu asombroso poder.	16 Proud as a lion, you hunt me down, multiplying your exploits at my expense,
17 Suscitas contra mí nuevos testigos, acrecientas tu furor contra mí y me atacas con tropas de relevo.	17 attacking me again and again, your fury against me ever increasing, your troops assailing me, waveafter wave.
18 ¿Por qué me sacaste del seno materno? Yo habría expirado sin que nadie me viera,	18 Why did you bring me out of the womb? I should have perished then, unseen by any eye,
19 sería como si nunca hubiera existido, me habrían llevado del vientre a la tumba.	19 a being that had never been, to be carried from womb to grave.
20 ¡Duran tan poco los días de mi vida! ¡Apártate de mí! Así podré sonreír un poco,	20 The days of my life are few enough: turn your eyes away, leave me a little joy,
21 antes que me vaya, para no volver, a la región de las tinieblas y las sombras,	21 before I go to the place of no return, to the land of darkness and shadow dark as death,
22 a la tierra de la oscuridad y el desorden, donde la misma claridad es tiniebla.	22 where dimness and disorder hold sway, and light itself is like dead of night.
