1 La fête des Pains sans Levain, qu’on appelle la Pâque, était proche;	1 Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the pasch, was at hand.
2 aussi les grands prêtres se demandaient-ils avec les maîtres de la Loi, comment faire pour le supprimer, car ils avaient peur du peuple.	2 And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put Jesus to death: but they feared the people.
3 C’est alors que Satan entra en Judas, surnommé Iscariote, qui était du groupe des Douze:	3 And Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, one of the twelve.
4 il alla s’entretenir avec les grands prêtres et la police du Temple sur les moyens de le leur livrer.	4 And he went, and discoursed with the chief priests and the magistrates, how he might betray him to them.
5 Ils en furent tout heureux et lui offrirent une somme d’argent.	5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.
6 Judas accepta, et dès lors il chercha une occasion de le livrer en l’absence de la foule.	6 And he promised. And he sought opportunity to betray him in the absence of the multitude.
7 Arriva le jour des Pains sans Levain où l’on doit sacrifier la Pâque.	7 And the day of the unleavened bread came, on which it was necessary that the pasch should be killed.
8 Jésus envoya Pierre et Jean et leur dit: "Allez nous faire les préparatifs pour que nous mangions la Pâque.”	8 And he sent Peter and John, saying: Go, and prepare for us the pasch, that we may eat.
9 Ils lui demandèrent: "Où veux-tu que nous la préparions?”	9 But they said: Where wilt thou that we prepare?
10 Jésus alors leur dit: "Lorsque vous entrerez en ville, un homme portant une cruche d’eau viendra à votre rencontre; suivez-le jusqu’à la maison où il entrera.	10 And he said to them: Behold, as you go into the city, there shall meet you a man carrying a pitcher of water: follow him into the house where he entereth in.
11 Vous direz au propriétaire de cette maison: Le Maître te fait dire: ‘Où est la salle où je mangerai la Pâque avec mes disciples?’	11 And you shall say to the goodman of the house: The master saith to thee, Where is the guest chamber, where I may eat the pasch with my disciples?
12 Il vous montrera à l’étage une grande pièce aménagée et vous y ferez les préparatifs.”	12 And he will shew you a large dining room, furnished; and there prepare.
13 Ils partirent donc et trouvèrent comme Jésus leur avait dit; ils firent là les préparatifs de la Pâque.	13 And they going, found as he had said to them, and made ready the pasch.
14 L’heure venue, Jésus s’installe pour le repas ainsi que les apôtres.	14 And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.
15 Il leur dit: "Je désirais beaucoup manger cette Pâque avec vous avant de souffrir.	15 And he said to them: With desire I have desired to eat this pasch with you, before I suffer.
16 Car, je vous le dis, je ne la mangerai plus avant qu’elle ne soit accomplie dans le Royaume de Dieu.”	16 For I say to you, that from this time I will not eat it, till it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
17 On lui passe une coupe; il rend grâces et dit: "Prenez-la et faites-la passer entre vous.	17 And having taken the chalice, he gave thanks, and said: Take, and divide it among you:
18 Je vous le dis: je ne boirai plus désormais du produit de la vigne jusqu’à la venue du Royaume de Dieu.”	18 For I say to you, that I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, till the kingdom of God come.
19 Il prend un pain, il rend grâces, le partage et le leur donne en disant: "Ceci est mon corps, livré pour vous: faites cela en mémoire de moi.”	19 And taking bread, he gave thanks, and brake; and gave to them, saying: This is my body, which is given for you. Do this for a commemoration of me.
20 Il fait de même pour la coupe après le dîner; il dit: "Cette coupe, c’est la nouvelle alliance grâce à mon sang répandu pour vous.	20 In like manner the chalice also, after he had supped, saying: This is the chalice, the new testament in my blood, which shall be shed for you.
21 “Sachez-le, celui qui va me livrer est à cette table avec moi.	21 But yet behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.
22 Pour le Fils de l’Homme, c’est le chemin qui déjà lui était assigné; mais quel malheur pour cet homme par qui il est livré!”	22 And the Son of man indeed goeth, according to that which is determined: but yet, woe to that man by whom he shall be betrayed.
23 Alors ils commencèrent à se demander les uns aux autres lequel d’entre eux pourrait faire une telle chose.	23 And they began to inquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.
24 Une discussion surgit entre eux: lequel d’entre eux était le premier?	24 And there was also a strife amongst them, which of them should seem to be the greater.
25 Jésus leur dit: "Les rois des nations païennes se comportent avec elles en maîtres, et quand ils les écrasent, ils se font appeler bienfaiteurs.	25 And he said to them: The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and they that have power over them, are called beneficent.
26 Ce ne sera pas pareil chez vous: le plus grand sera comme le dernier arrivé, et celui qui est à la tête, comme celui qui sert.	26 But you not so: but he that is the greater among you, let him become as the younger; and he that is the leader, as he that serveth.
27 “Qui donc est le plus grand: celui qui est à table, ou celui qui sert? Celui qui est à table, bien sûr; pourtant je suis au milieu de vous comme celui qui sert.	27 For which is greater, he that sitteth at table, or he that serveth? Is it not he that sitteth at table? But I am in the midst of you, as he that serveth:
28 “Vous êtes ceux qui ne m’ont pas abandonné dans mes épreuves.	28 And you are they who have continued with me in my temptations:
29 Aussi je fais pour vous comme mon Père a fait pour moi en me donnant la royauté:	29 And I dispose to you, as my Father hath disposed to me, a kingdom;
30 vous mangerez et vous boirez à ma table dans mon Royaume, et vous siégerez sur des trônes pour gouverner les douze tribus d’Israël.	30 That you may eat and drink at my table, in my kingdom: and may sit upon thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31 “Simon, Simon! Satan vous a réclamés pour vous secouer comme on fait pour le blé au tamis,	31 And the Lord said: Simon, Simon, behold Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:
32 mais j’ai prié pour toi, pour que tu ne perdes pas la foi; et toi, lorsque tu seras revenu, affermis tes frères.”	32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and thou, being once converted, confirm thy brethren.
33 Pierre lui dit: "Seigneur, je suis prêt à te suivre en prison et jusqu’à la mort.”	33 Who said to him: Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
34 Jésus lui répond: "Je te le dis, Pierre: le coq ne chantera pas cette nuit avant que tu n’aies affirmé par trois fois que tu ne me connais pas.”	34 And he said: I say to thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, till thou thrice deniest that thou knowest me. And he said to them:
35 Jésus leur dit: "Lorsque je vous ai envoyés sans bourse, ni sac, ni chaussures, quelque chose vous a-t-il manqué?” Ils répondent: "Non.”	35 When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, did you want anything?
36 Alors il reprend: "Mais maintenant, si quelqu’un a une bourse, qu’il la prenne, et de même celui qui a un sac, et que celui qui n’a pas d’épée vende son manteau pour en acheter une.	36 But they said: Nothing. Then said he unto them: But now he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise a scrip; and he that hath not, let him sell his coat, and buy a sword.
37 Car, je vous le dis, il faut que s’accomplisse en ma personne cette Écriture: on l’a mis au rang des malfaiteurs. De fait, ce qui me concerne touche à sa fin.”	37 For I say to you, that this that is written must yet be fulfilled in me: And with the wicked was he reckoned. For the things concerning me have an end.
38 Ils lui disent: "Seigneur, il y a ici deux épées.” Et lui répond: "C’est assez!”	38 But they said: Lord, behold here are two swords. And he said to them, It is enough.
39 Sortant de là, il se dirige selon son habitude vers le Mont des Oliviers et ses disciples le suivent.	39 And going out, he went, according to his custom, to the mount of Olives. And his disciples also followed him.
40 Arrivé en ce lieu il leur dit: "Priez, pour ne pas être pris par la tentation.”	40 And when he was come to the place, he said to them: Pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
41 Puis il s’éloigne d’eux, à la distance d’un jet de pierre,	41 And he was withdrawn away from them a stone's cast; and kneeling down, he prayed,
42 et fléchissant les genoux il fait cette prière: "Père, si tu le veux, fais passer cette coupe loin de moi. Cependant, que ce ne soit pas ma volonté mais la tienne qui s’accomplisse.”	42 Saying: Father, if thou wilt, remove this chalice from me: but yet not my will, but thine be done.
43 C’est alors que du ciel un ange lui apparaît, qui le réconforte.	43 And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony, he prayed the longer.
44 Jésus est entré en agonie et il prie plus intensément; sa sueur se change en gouttes de sang qui tombent à terre.	44 And his sweat became as drops of blood, trickling down upon the ground.
45 Quand il se relève de sa prière et revient vers les disciples, il les trouve endormis, accablés de tristesse.	45 And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow.
46 Alors il leur dit: "Vous dormez? Levez-vous donc et priez pour ne pas être pris par la tentation.”	46 And he said to them: Why sleep you? arise, pray, lest you enter into temptation.
47 Il parlait encore lorsque arriva une troupe avec, en tête, le dénommé Judas, l’un des Douze. Comme il s’approchait de Jésus pour l’embrasser,	47 As he was yet speaking, behold a multitude; and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near to Jesus, for to kiss him.
48 Jésus lui dit: "Judas, c’est donc par un baiser que tu livres le Fils de l’Homme?”	48 And Jesus said to him: Judas, dost thou betray the Son of man with a kiss?
49 Ceux qui entouraient Jésus devinèrent ce qui allait se passer; ils dirent: "Seigneur, allons-nous frapper de l’épée?”	49 And they that were about him, seeing what would follow, said to him: Lord, shall we strike with the sword?
50 L’un d’eux frappa le serviteur du Grand Prêtre et lui trancha l’oreille droite.	50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
51 Mais Jésus intervint avec ces mots: "Restez-en là.” Puis il toucha l’oreille de cet homme et le guérit.	51 But Jesus answering, said: Suffer ye thus far. And when he had touched his ear, he healed him.
52 Jésus dit alors à ceux qui étaient venus le surprendre, grands prêtres, gardes du Temple et Anciens: "Vous êtes partis en expédition avec épées et gourdins, comme pour prendre un bandit;	52 And Jesus said to the chief priests, and magistrates of the temple, and the ancients, that were come unto him: Are ye come out, as it were against a thief, with swords and clubs?
53 pourquoi ne m’avez-vous pas arrêté lorsque, jour après jour, j’étais avec vous dans le Temple? Mais c’est votre heure lorsque règnent les ténèbres.”	53 When I was daily with you in the temple, you did not stretch forth your hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
54 Après s’être emparés de Jésus, ils l’emmenèrent et le firent entrer dans la maison du Grand Prêtre; Pierre les suivait à distance.	54 And apprehending him, they led him to the high priest's house. But Peter followed afar off.
55 Au milieu de la cour ils avaient allumé un feu autour duquel ils étaient assis, et Pierre vint s’asseoir au milieu d’eux.	55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were sitting about it, Peter was in the midst of them.
56 Comme il était là assis, à la clarté du feu, une jeune servante le dévisage et dit: "Celui-ci était aussi avec lui!”	56 Whom when a certain servant maid had seen sitting at the light, and had earnestly beheld him, she said: This man also was with him.
57 Pierre le nie: "Femme, je ne le connais pas.”	57 But he denied him, saying: Woman, I know him not.
58 Peu de temps après un autre le voit et dit: "Toi aussi tu es du groupe.” Et Pierre de dire: "Non, je n’en suis pas.”	58 And after a little while, another seeing him, said: Thou also art one of them. But Peter said: O man, I am not.
59 Une heure à peu près s’écoule, et un autre revient à la charge: "C’est exact, celui-ci aussi était avec lui. D’ailleurs, c’est un Galiléen!”	59 And after the space, as it were of one hour, another certain man affirmed, saying: Of a truth, this man was also with him; for he is also a Galilean.
60 Et Pierre répond: "Je ne sais pas ce que tu veux dire!” Il n’avait pas fini de parler que le coq chanta.	60 And Peter said: Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, as he was yet speaking, the cock crew.
61 Le Seigneur se retourna et regarda Pierre; Pierre alors se rappela la parole du Seigneur qui lui avait dit: “Aujourd’hui même, avant que le coq ne chante, tu m’auras renié trois fois.”	61 And the Lord turning looked on Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, as he had said: Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.
62 Il sortit au-dehors et pleura amèrement.	62 And Peter going out, wept bitterly.
63 Au même moment les hommes qui détenaient Jésus commencèrent à le tourner en ridicule et à le frapper.	63 And the men that held him, mocked him, and struck him.
64 Ils lui avaient couvert le visage et ils lui demandaient: "Fais le prophète: qui t’a frappé?”	64 And they blindfolded him, and smote his face. And they asked him, saying: Prophesy, who is it that struck thee?
65 Ils lui lançaient encore bien d’autres insultes.	65 And blaspheming, many other things they said against him.
66 Au lever du jour se réunirent les Anciens du peuple, les grands prêtres et les maîtres de la Loi, et l’on amena Jésus devant leur Conseil, ou Sanhédrin.	66 And as soon as it was day, the ancients of the people, and the chief priests and scribes, cane together; and they brought him into their council, saying: If thou be the Christ, tell us.
67 Là ils lui dirent: "Es-tu le Messie? Réponds-nous!” Jésus leur répondit: "Si je vous le dis vous ne croirez pas,	67 And he saith to them: If I shall tell you, you will not believe me.
68 et si je vous interroge, vous ne répondrez pas.	68 And if I shall also ask you, you will not answer me, nor let me go.
69 Mais désormais le Fils de l’Homme siégera à la droite de la Puissance divine.”	69 But hereafter the Son of man shall be sitting on the right hand of the power of God.
70 Ils lui dirent: "Tu es donc le Fils de Dieu?” Il répondit: "Vous venez de le dire: je le suis.”	70 Then said they all: Art thou then the Son of God? Who said: You say that I am.
71 Et eux de dire: "Qu’avons-nous encore besoin de témoignages? Nous l’avons entendu nous-mêmes de sa bouche!”	71 And they said: What need we any further testimony? for we ourselves have heard it from his own mouth.
