Siracide 13

1 Chi tocca la pece ne resterà imbrattato, e chi avrà relazioni col superbo ne prenderà la superbia.	1 He who touches pitch blackens his hand; he who associates with an impious man learns his ways.
2 Si mette un peso addosso chi fa in società con uno da più di lui. Non ti far socio di uno più ricco di te.	2 Bear no burden too heavy for you; go with no one greater or wealthier than yourself. How can the earthen pot go with the metal cauldron? When they knock together, the pot will be smashed:
3 Come potranno star insieme il paiolo e la pentola? Appena si urtano, questa andrà in bricioli.	3 The rich man does wrong and boasts of it, the poor man is wronged and begs forgiveness.
4 Il ricco, fatti dei torti, fremerà; il povero, maltrattato, dovrà stare zitto.	4 As long as the rich man can use you he will enslave you, but when you are exhausted, he will abandon you.
5 Se gli dài, si servirà di te; se non hai da dare, ti abbandonerà.	5 As long as you have anything he will speak fair words to you, and with smiles he will win your confidence;
6 Se hai, vivrà con te, e ti spoglierà, senza aver di te compassione alcuna.	6 When he needs something from you he will cajole you, then without regret he will impoverish you.
7 Se tu gli sei necessario, t'ingannerà, con sorrisi ti darà delle speranze: ti racconterà belle cose, e ti dirà: « Di che hai bisogno? »	7 While it serves his purpose he will beguile you, then twice or three times he will terrify you; When later he sees you he will pass you by, and shake his head over you.
8 e ti confonderà coi suoi desinari, fino a tanto che in due o tre volte, non ti abbia rifinito, e alla fine si burlerà di te, e poi, vedendoti, passerà oltre e scoterà la testa alle tue spalle.	8 Guard against being presumptuous; be not as those who lack sense.
9 Umiliati davanti a Dio e aspetta la sua mano.	9 When invited by a man of influence, keep your distance; then he will urge you all the more.
10 Guarda che, sedotto, non ti umilii stoltamente.	10 Be not bold with him lest you be rebuffed, but keep not too far away lest you be forgotten.
11 Guardati dall'essere umile nella tua sapienza, affinchè umiliato, tu non sia sedotto sino alla stoltezza.	11 Engage not freely in discussion with him, trust not his many words; For by prolonged talk he will test you, and though smiling he will probe you.
12 Chiamato da un potente, tirati indietro, per questo appunto egli ti chiamerà e richiamerà.	12 Mercilessly he will make of you a laughingstock, and will not refrain from injury or chains.
13 Non essere importuno, per non essere cacciato via, e non andar tanto lontano, per non essere dimenticato.	13 Be on your guard and take care never to accompany men of violence.
14 Non ritenere di poter parlare da uguale con lui; non credere alle molte sue parole, perchè con molti discorsi ti metterà alla prova, e, sorridendo, t'interrogherà per sapere i tuoi segreti.	14 Every living thing loves its own kind, every man a man like himself.
15 Il suo animo crudele conserverà le tue parole, e non ti risparmierà i maltrattamenti e la prigione.	15 Every being is drawn to its own kind; with his own kind every man associates.
16 Stai in guardia, e molto attento a ciò che ti senti dire, perchè cammini sulla tua rovina.	16 Is a wolf ever allied with a lamb? So it is with the sinner and the just.
17 Sentendo queste cose, guardale come in sogno, e stai sveglio.	17 Can there be peace between the hyena and the dog? Or between the rich and the poor can there be peace?
18 Per tutta la tua vita ama Dio, e invoca lo per la tua salvezza.	18 Lion's prey are the wild asses of the desert; so too the poor are feeding grounds for the rich.
19 Ogni animale ama il suo simile, così ogni uomo il suo prossimo.	19 A proud man abhors lowliness; so does the rich man abhor the poor.
20 Ogni vivente s'unirà coi suoi simili, così ogni uomo s'associerà col suo simile.	20 When a rich man stumbles he is supported by a friend; when a poor man trips he is pushed down by a friend.
21 Se il lume potrà fare un giorno società coll'agnello, così il peccatore col giusto.	21 Many are the supporters for a rich man when he speaks; though what he says is odious, it wins approval. When a poor man speaks they make sport of him; he speaks wisely and no attention is paid him.
22 Qual relazione fra un uomo santo e un cane? Qual unione fra il ricco e il povero?	22 A rich man speaks and all are silent, his wisdom they extol to the clouds. A poor man speaks and they say: "Who is that?" If he slips they cast him down.
23 Preda del leone è l'asino salvatico nel deserto, e pastura dei ricchi sono i poveri.	23 Wealth is good when there is no sin; but poverty is evil by the standards of the proud.
24 E come il superbo ha in abominio l'umiltà, cosi il ricco ha in esecrazione il povero.	24 The heart of a man changes his countenance, either for good or for evil.
25 Il ricco che vacilla è sostenuto dai suoi amici, ma il povero, caduto che sia, vien cacciato anche dai familiari.	25 The sign of a good heart is a cheerful countenance; withdrawn and perplexed is the laborious schemer.
26 Ii ricco che ha sbagliato ha molti sostenitori, e, se parla con arroganza, lo giustificano.
27 Ma il povero, se sbaglia, è ripreso acerbamente; se parla sensatamente, non se ne tien conto.
28 Parla il ricco, e tutti stan cheti, e innalzano fino alle nuvole le sue parole;
29 parla il povero, e dicono: « Chi è costui? » e se inciampa lo getteranno per terra.
30 Buone son le ricchezze per chi non ha peccato sulla coscienza, e pessima è la povertà nella bocca dell'empio.
31 Il cuore dell'uomo ne cangia la faccia, sia in bene, sia in male.
32 Il buon viso, se gno di buon cuore, lo troverai difficilmente e con pena.
